I used my old stereo, a 3.5mm jack to jack lead and my old laptop. My old laptop has a 3.5mm mic input, so the lead went from the headphone socket on the stereo to the mic input on the laptop. Open-source software: Audacity. This one was actually from a minidisc but that's how I've recorded others.
