This was a battle in Tokyo, Japan sometime between 2009 to 2012 and I was mad as hell that I missed it while I was living there. To me Primo, Pete Rock, and Large Pro are "The Trinity". Then again I can't forget Marley Marl, Rick Rubin, Ced Gee, Erick Sermon, Sir Jinx, The Bomb Squad, Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, K-Def, Cold187UM, Dr. Dre, RZA, Havoc, Da Beatminerz, Diamond D, Lord Finesse, Lord Jazz, Kay-Gee, A-Plus, Domino, too many DOPE DJ's/Producers from '87 to '99 to name.

Pete ALL DAY! Just listen to the instrumental of “For Pete’s Sake”. That is technically the most musical, bass heavy, ornate, syncopated, soulful produced beat in hip hop. He uses at least 7 completely different samples and layers for one joint. To be able to match the key scale and tempo of each sample with the limited technology back then is insane. He rhymes and also cuts on the beat. CL Smooth’s verses are super cold on that joint too. I love Preemo too, but I’m sorry, Pete’s in another universe.

Same here, but I could say the same about 'Moment of truth'. They both created masterpieces, but overall I'd say Premo was more consistent, and his signature sound is so unique, you hear the first kick, you know its Premier.

Both Preemo is king of the boom bap. Pete is the king of the jazz sample. That Pete Rock and Common project is going to be amazing. That Preemo and Nas project is going to be amazing. The last 5 Gang Starr albums are stellar. Pete Rock and CL have 2 classics ,Pete Rock Soul Survivor is that ish and 80 Blocks from Tiffany's 2 as well. Nas The World Is Yours and Nas Is Like are 2 of the best songs, ever. Nas I Gave You Power and Nas Queens Bridge Politics are 2 of the best songs ,ever.

If you would have asked me maybe 5 years ago, I would have said Preemo. Today? I’d say both. The way Pete puts his joints together is damn near scientific, the layers and textures to his joints. What’s ill to me about Preemo, though? His sample choices. You go to any other producer’s sample sources and you can hear what they heard and why they would flip that sample. You go to Preem’s samples and 9 times out of 10, you’re like “WTF made him flip THAT??” Dude’s ear is just different. Salute to the both of them…
