In the chorus, when he sings “Caught in a Lie”, the tune becomes major, specifically when he says “Lie”, while everything else in the song is in a minor key. This could symbolise that he’s “lying” about the key signature ☺️

The verses are in minor key then the chorus goes into major key which already makes the song so unique. I agree the song fits Jimin’s style of dance. The build up in the song is fantastic and Jimin’s voice fits it perfectly.

JIMIN'S first masterpiece "LIE" surpassed 80 million streams on Spotify. LIE was self-written and composed by Jimin where he gained endless praises. LIE was released in BTS second studio album 'Wings" back in 2016. On January 2019, 'LIE' surpassed 60 million streams, making it the first BTS solo song to hit that milestone. 4 months after that LIE reached another milestone when it surpassed 70 million stream on May 2019. Last August 'LIE' hits another milestone by surpassing 80 million streams, exactly 3 months after surpassing 70 million streams. For a song that was released back in 2016, 'LIE' definitely is above standard as it remains as the HIGHEST STREAM song for its era.. I appreciate you acknowledging how good this song is even if it isn't your cup of tea. I love how jarring the chorus is personally. The majority of the song is Jimin sussing through his feelings in his own mind; a secret confession that he can't yet speak aloud. Then the chorus comes in and it's the moment where all of the emotions and all of the things he has kept hidden explode out of him; unable to be kept at bay. The way he whispers the lines right before the chorus are like he is exuding the last of his energy to hold it in before he loses complete control. Anybody who has struggled with emotions they don't want others to know about has been there and this song details it perfectly. It's one of my top BTS songs. Thanks for reacting to it!

I don’t really measure the song by how well it will do in the US . That’s why BTS are phenomenal. They’re bringing new sounds that you would never imagine that it will be heard in the US . They’re changing the game . I really love how experimental they are with their music . That’s why they have permanent fans who never get sick of them because they’re constantly changing their sound. None of their albums sound the same . I respect that about them . A lot of artists will prefer to stay in their comfort zone but BTS are fearless and constantly experimenting new sounds .

Classical Musicians Reacts have a fantastic reaction to this in which they explain the key change in the chorus being text painting. I already loved this song (it was my number 1 BTS song a year ago as I was going through their discography in order and learning about them), but their breakdown really helped me appreciate it more. I find a lot of Black reactors are really taken with this song and connect to its gospel aspects. You know, if gospel was a bit naughty and sexy. Also, I appreciate this as a supplement to my Korean language studies because the vocab isn’t that difficult. P.S. Don’t call women/girls “females.” 😛 But I get what you’re saying. P.P.S. I’ve literally never seen Jino pause as often as I have on this song LOL… I love how the chorus and specifically the line “caught a lie“ always throws everyone off… Including me. The whole entire song sounds very theatrical and I love the fact that the line in the chorus changes keys and is coming off as sounding almost as sharp as you pointed out… And it seems very deliberate that it was done that way because it’s not where you expect that note to go. (In fact if any of you are curious it’s really fun to watch the classical musicians react to this song as well, because they explain very well why the music in this song is so interesting)

Lie is one of my absolute favorite songs from BTS, and is imo one of the most complex songs that still manage to sound playable in a regular basis. It's just perfect, honestly. It starts with those strings that set the mood for something kind of somber, but it's BTS, so you know this is a sort of intro, the song isn't actually like that (and then came Black Swan but that's neither here nor there). So you don't know what to expect but you expect _something_ and it builds so much anticipation. And then the harmony starts with that Spanish guitar sound and you already think "okay, this is different! It sounds good though," then it cuts out and *boom,* the beat drops. Jimin sings beautifully as always, but it sounds different, more raw. He is using his chest voice, which is not all that common (at least when he's in the limelight, they tend to highlight his mixed, head voice and falsetto). The beat doesn't go hard, but it's still so powerful, especially with those little pauses that it makes from time to time that leave you at the edge of your seat wondering "what's next?" The tempo is 3/4 which makes it sound sooo entrancing and neverending, and so unique [Edit: *_caught_* in a lie]. It's quite unusual for pop songs to be like this. And then the backing choir comes at you with those haunting vocals that give you _chills_ and right after bringing it to the max it _keeps you at the top_ just waiting for the climax that you _know_ is coming, with Jimin singing more slowly. The transition to the chorus happens and you don't know what hit you because that- that was a f*cking _key change_ the song went to a goddamn major key after it was established as a minor song. AND THEN YOU REALIZE _THAT'S THE LIE._ It's so frickin genius. Cought in a lie. The happy lie that is shown to everyone else, the chorus, the _face of the song._ And it's in a "happy" key. It's so different from the darkness of the rest of the song... And they even go as far as changing the backing instrument, it's now as far as you can get from a Spanish guitar, a synthetic-sounding piano keyboard. Yet, as the chorus progresses it slowly descents back into minor, until the entire mask is shed. The chorus is over and we go back to the guitar. Again, the backing choir: _chills._ And the music cuts out for some heart-ripping vocals (it's a run I think, beautifully executed). Then of course you have the build-up to the last bridge (I'm not sure if that's the name?), where we get that awesome high note, and it basically feels like an "I can't take it anymore, all this lying," and suddenly it's back down to the chorus but it's only some quiet, breathy vocals, a whisper. The lie gets weaker, it no longer has as much conviction and no backing from any instruments. But of course, the lie is inescapable. You’re caught in a lie, you can't free yourself, so the chorus comes back in full force. The last line sounds so desperate, somehow hopeful yet hopeless, like trying even when you know it’s deemed to fail. And the song ends with the last dark notes of the guitar, still minor. It doesn't end on a happy note. To sum up, the song takes you on a rollercoaster. The concept, the lyrics and the music all blend perfectly and tell the same story, to the point that even on their own, they still relay the same deceptively dark tale. And this is all possible because of the different colors and textures Jimin can give his voice. Desperate, smooth and silky, quiet and hopeless. It's beautiful. Also that tone that he has during the "make it stop (tonna tonna cho)" part in the prechorus just shook me.

Juno: I still think you're 40. LIE by Jimin this is my second favorite song in the whole BTS catalog. This song makes me feel vulnerable. I watch the mv and I find tears falling down my cheeks. Seeing the choices made for this performance to this song is riveting. AnnMargo explained musically, this just isn't done. Jimin not only takes it from a minor to a major, He does it with ease. Absolutely STUNNING!!!

I really like Lie because it has that "tramped" sensation. The strings will pull and release you throughout the song as if you were caught in a web which I feel whats the illusion they were going for. You are trapped alongside Jimin and there isn't a way out which is brought by the abrupt ending. And because Jimin has the higher pitch, I can see how it could appeal to more females because we can somehow relate to its texture more. I hope I'm making sense, I'm not a music critic but I am a literature fanatic so I'm trying to describe it in literary terms.

Jino oppa, I was really surprised hearing this song for the first time. As you put it really well "it deserves praise". This song also suits Jimin's style as contemporary dancer, it has an operatic/classical feel to it. The organ on the bridge also a genius touch. It is classic but sounds modern at the same time.

Well, I’m sticking with my guess of 42 that I made in the Pied Piper comments. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Lie: Anything with a 6/8 time signature gets extra attention from me. I love it. I’m also a sucker for a soaring string section - when it fits. Brass gets me too. 😍 At first listen I was a little unsure when the chorus hit. Minor into major? Oh...kay... I just saw two upcoming idols on a talent show try to do Lie (song and dance) and it's hard to hear and see a song that has such deep, dark tones just get sung in a basic kpop way. Ebony71 There's this one cover of Lie I like. It's done by Byeongkwan from A.C.E. He also covered Taemin's song in the video. Although Jimin is a better dancer, I think Byeongkwan did a good job translating the song's emotion. Please take your time to watch it. A.C.E. are rather unknown and the only group in their company. So who cares if the Americans like it or not? Must everything be measured by the taste of the great USA public? And why? Most songs that hit #1 in the USA are songs I can only listen to a few times, and then get bored by. A song like Jimin's "Lie" I can listen to many times a day, every day, and it is constantly fresh. It is just as new and surprising to me today as it was when I first heard it four years ago. As for the song appealing more to "females", that is just SO wrong. When trying to convince my male friends, who are shy about listening to a "boy band", this is the song I play them. No one I've introduced to it has failed to be utterly stunned by the sheer audacity of the composition. If there is a specific group this song appeals to, it is definitely people who understand how music works and know music theory. I'm not talking about people who know about studio mechanics and sound issues (and can converse seriously about hip-hop "genres"), but people with a serious musical education, who recognize genius wherever it comes from. Without fail, they all scream aloud when the chorus comes around and Jimin hits that "forbidden" major third, that reveals the nature of the "lie" (which Jin found quite unimpressive). It takes all kinds, doesn't it? How anyone can listen to this song, and not be thoroughly astonished by it, beats me. I give it an unreserved 101%. When it came out, I felt it was, by far, the best thing BTS had ever done. I've been waiting four years for something better, but it hasn't happened. LIE is the jewel in BTS' crown, in my personal and private opinion. Agree or disagree, it won't change my mind. "I lied for the first time today. I knew you would have something to say about the change in key from the verse and the chorus. When I first heard it, I didn't like it either and felt like it was a little disjointed, but the more I listened to the song, the more it grew on me. I absolutely love the instrumentation in this song. For me, the song is very expressive and reflects him well. His lower tones are darker and more centered where as his higher tones are brighter. While used in the chorus, the arrangement works as it creates dynamic in the song and emphasizes the "release". It ties in together with the aesthetic of the song as a whole.

Hi Dino, it's been a while since you posted this video but I hope you can see this! First, your channel and honesty is a breath of fresh air!! Second, I agree that the US is not that open for many different sounds, specially so experimentalist like many of kpop and BTS songs are, but the reception is better on other places! Being brazilian, and coming from a very mixed and rich musical culture, where we have Bossa Nova, Tropicália and so many fluid genres of music, BTS songs resonate so well to me, even tho is so different from what we have here... But when they have a beautiful melody, the richer the sound the more I feel it :) I have a playlist of only musics with that kind of atmosphere from BTS

For all of these Wings solos, the members wrote each of their lyrics to be personal to them, as well as matching the storyline. Jimin's lie is being stuck in this self destructive mindset, he had strong issues with his weight struggles, image, abilities and was very hard on himself when he made mistakes. He's in a much better state now, especially after his epiphany during the Citifield concert last year, where he broke down on stage and later explained it was because it really hit him then that's okay to make mistakes, that it's good to have a more laid back approach (before he said Jin was very laid back and didn't understand how he can be so chill, but now he realises that he's so much happier this way). He's much happier now

If you're interested in other songs from around this era that also have that dark/mysterious characteristic that are also bops, I'd highly HIGHLY recommend "Dead Leaves" and "House of Cards." These are absolute gems of songs that I'm sure a lot of ARMYs don't even know about. BTS are truly the kings of B-sides. Filler songs don't exist in their discography.

Speaking as someone who lives in the US, one of the reasons I stan BTS is for how different they are from any other westernized music. I highly disdain most American music. Especially the pop. I don't even listen to the radio. I have maybe a handful of songs on my playlist from big name American artist, but it is strictly for the sound or the good beat because the lyrics are always trash. I used to listen to groups like Maroon 5 but they always sing about the same thing and it all sounds the same and I got tired of it fast. All that to say, I love Lie as it ticks all my boxes, it sounds good, Jimin sings it beautifully and the story the lyrics tell is awesome.

When you say the US isn’t open to many genres what exactly do you mean? Radio is very different from what Americans across the board listen to. A LOT of people I know listen to Jazz, classical, blues, lounge, soul, Spanish guitar...we’re actually pretty sophisticated musically and not as narrow in our tastes as you seem to think.

I wanted to comment,Jino, that there are so many open-minded Kpop music lovers here in The USA. Folks over here love and adore Jimin's Solo 'Lie'. I hope you will get a chance sometime to check out the Jimin's Live version on stage performance. Its very impressive! The song and jimin's classic dancing all just come together perfectly. I have a feeling that you may be of the age of around 47,48!
