I am a 51 yr old female, happily married for 31 years and with two daughters and one grandchild. I live a pretty sheltered life. Honestly, I'm not sure what possessed me to watch anything like this. Watching this has blown me away. I better clarify, not literally! My mouth is still wide open at all I've seen and heard. The thought that someone who doesn't even know me is putting his life on the line for his country and me is overwhelming. I'm feeling so blessed right now. I'll never meet DJ Shipley, but it would be an honor. Anyhow, my thoughts and prayers go out to you. Thank you for making me see that my life is a piece of cake compared to some of the things you've gone through. I don't think that I will ever feel sorry for myself again. You're amazing!!!! Thank you for giving all of yourself to our country. To end this on a lighter side, my husband thinks that the only thing that DJ Shiply might not survive is my cooking! I fear he could be correct!

Interesting insight. I think most of the listeners are other veterans like myself, it’s almost like therapy hearing other people’s stories that have gone through similar things. It is cool that it was beneficial for you to listen to and to hear your appreciation. There’s guys serving like this guy that movies can’t even show any comparison. People don’t really understand fully what our special operations community consists of. Thanks for the comment and a bunch of other people liked your comment also so it was appreciated by many. This one moved me. I’m a former Navy CT OGA guy who worked with DevGru. My last deployment to JBad was a shit show in 2011. I came back and went through a horrible divorce, took a defense contract (left it quickly because of several losses on former team plus ongoing divorce), and moved states away to the mountains. I distinctly remember extortion 17. I carried everything myself for a very long time, and it nearly broke me. I watched friends check out. That honestly looked like the best option for me, too. But damn, if I didn’t find the most amazing woman to help pull me from the weeds. I know what it feels like to have written the note and made the video… and still be here. It does get better. We just have to talk with each other. It really sucks to fly solo for the first time when you need someone the most. Thanks, D. J. And Shawn. I’m new to this channel, but this one hit home to me. Much appreciated. Cheers fellas.

DJ's honesty about TBI, medical retirement, PTSD/Operator Syndrome, rehab, transition to civilian life, and personal life outside the military is, so far, the most thorough, candid, and well-articulated of all the The Shawn Ryan Show interviews. Ed Calderon, Tu Lam, and DJ Shipley are easily top 3 because these guys are the most introspective and reflective about their experiences, not to mention that they all have similar threads of thoughts. And, holy shit, has DJ experienced pain and adversity! He has nine lives.

I worked with DJ's dad, Senior Chief Don Shipley at ST2 and remember DJ as a kid at various times on trips to AP Hill or Ft Pickett. While I took a different track in the Teams, I didn't know his career would intersect mine. Then I retired in 2010 and went through the whole medical retirement and isolation episode alone. A process that has been very difficult until today. So much truth spoken during this episode. I don't know how to process it. Hollywood has gone so deeply Leftist that "American Sniper" could not be made today. That's just over eight years ago now. Not only would Hollywood not take up this movie idea, it could only deform it on every level. Best choice now for a sane, sound, and respectful serialization of Shipley's story is Ben Shapiro's media org, The Daily Wire. Their studio group have already put out two or three well-made films, all in line with everything you and I live by, and have committed to more. It's just part of the beginning of the Great Breakaway, wherein we are building a parallel society---of businesses, national products and services, media, education, and entertainment, all unbeholden to the malignant, nearly extraterrestrial mental deformity that now characterizes the Left and endangers both the Shawn Ryan Show and everyone of our opinions, both written and spoken. I do hope Daily Wire or similar takes a look at this, and moves your excellent idea to a place where men like DJ and Shawn need no longer struggle to be seen or heard.... Or merely exist.

In many ways I was lucky: 8yrs as an MP and zero combat deployments. But I’ve served with, trained with, trained, known many others that did. Known some that died in accidents, combat, and suicide. Many people went to FOB SHANK, I knew SSG Shank. His was the first remembrance service I had been to and there wasn’t a dry eye in the chapel. One of my soldiers went and left the Army Reserve and became an Okie Guard infantry officer, named Lt Joe Cunningham. Miss that man something fierce! I can remember the day I got the phone call that he had died, was just before midnight and I was working patrol on post when our mutual friend called to tell me. I was in denial till I saw his body in the coffin. For several years I carried the guilt that I wasn’t there to help him.

Multiple tours to Afghanistan and Iraqi plus they were back in the US between deployments just in time to go help with Katrina. They said the superdome was worse than anything else they saw. Just spent 4 1/2 hrs watching this (good work Shawn). The most heroic thing is his honesty. Not many men would share the level of detail he does of his flaws. Every assumed hero/great person has them. I wish he and his family the best. .....One of my favorite tales that is told with different versions but still the same point: An old Cherokee tale that tells of a grandfather teaching life principles to his grandson: “A fight is going on inside me,” he says to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith. "The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed."...... DJ , like 99% of men has fed both wolves at different times in his life.

Sean..I come from a long line of operators. I only hear talk like this after a few drinks on Christmas evening and today, Easter, when the family gets together. This is the ONLY platform where I hear the honest truth about war where operators actually discuss their business for civie consumption. Coming from the Son of Don, who knew and trained under Boehm…this is the most intense honest and genuine podcast on the net. Carry on❤

This was one of if not the most impressive interview I've ever listened to. Thanks for doing these. Thank You to DJ for his service and his continuing service to his brothers who suffer mentally and physically. "It's ok to not be ok" is a great message.

Single most real, raw conversation about a person's struggles I have ever heard. This should be required listening for any person wanting to go SF in any branch. Crazy respect for DJ for being so open and Shawn for just letting him talk. Great job!!!

I’m not sure how many times I’ve watched this now, or how many times I’ve just hit play and put it in my pocket, but at this point I could probably quote this entire 4 hour interview. I still get something new out of it every time. There’s so much to unpack with every one of your guest segments, but DJ’s taps a different vein. It’s like the Blackwater episode or the Memorial Day segment from two years ago. Nobody does just what you do. I don’t do the KZbin compliment thing too often, and typically read most comments as if they were written in satirical dude-bro syntax, but I find myself obligated by character and moral principle to just take my goddamn hat off for your series and count these interviews among the most insightful and realistic and relevant moments to be put in front of a camera. It’s my humble opinion, and probably more self-serving than anything, but in the short time you’ve been doing this, you’ve become unlike any other interviewer I’ve ever seen or heard of. You’re gonna be remembered for this, for a long time. This is your legacy. It’s just an internet show, just dudes talkin and vets shooting the shit, but these conversations mean something to your audience. You’re doing something nobody else out there is really doing. There are other podcasts and shows and some guys out there have had some real showstop guests, but they just don’t host the way you do. It shows, and it’s appreciated. All that hard work is appreciated. Some days, it’s the replays I can count on to get me out of a slump and up into motion. Just wanted to say a real thank you.

Well said. I'm on my 3rd playthrough of this episode. I keep coming back to it every few months. Shawn is uniquely perfect for these interviews. He's humble, a good listener, and he's been in the trenches himself, so there's a mutual respect there that allows these warriors to open up. This is one of the most raw interviews I've ever seen.

Some people don’t understand whether it’s the military or being a cop- When there’s a “family business” you are expected to live up to or expected/assume to just do, there’s so much to it. When you are given lessons or trained for something nearly from the time you are born…… some people will never understand unless you have gone through it.

Shawn I can’t thank you enough for allowing DJ to tell his story in such a transparent and vulnerable way. I needed to hear it. I felt like I was in the room waiting for my turn to share. I have never thought of my family (wife and kids) as part of my team. I see that I have to be humble and not feed my ego to make myself “ better or OK”. Thanks again

More conversations like this need to happen, elite top teir professionals shining a light behind the curtain. The love for the job and the details DJ showed was awe inspiring and the work he and the ones surrounding him these days are doing for others is what the world needs more of. 4.5 hours went in a flash! I’d listen to DJ and his life another 10 hours. And he should have a best selling book. It’s not for the money, it’s that people would be honored and moved to be allowed to hear this story of a true soldier and family man and how his life ran the fullest gamut possible. It’s engrossing, humbling and inspiring.
