Dj Tutorial. How to mix ,chop old school tunes

Many of you cussing this guy obviously can't mix to save ya sorry lives, it would be silly of him to just mix as that will not teach you anything, also not to burst many bubbles but our body, time and the universe has a rhythm so to be taught it very sad, being taught a instrument is different but being taught how to mix tracks you love is sad, many of us are here to see how good a dj tutorial actually pans out :) Listen to him, as long as you got rhythm and know some basic music beat timings then you will be a great Dj. I am a true great DJ and can mix any genres whit eachother and i say this uploader is talking big sense to me!!!

I mix a lot of these types of tunes, and it's great to gain knowledge on how to effectively mix these challenging tunes. I also often use loop phrasing of vocal parts to guarantee precise timing and then fade in the other track. Can also work nicely. Thanks for the video!

8 years later lol. Hey Jonathon hope you are well! I personally always mixed in the whole Whispers Intro and cut it at "it's a love thang" Back then everyone knew that tune's beginning and were waiting for the singer to get the jam started. Just me, we did what worked for us. Great vid as usual. Take care!

thank you john for the vids! a lot of the stuff you teach I know already, but the catch is that i never had anybody teach me or learned from anybody, i learned it all on my own. really helpful to have somebody explain it in a way that makes so much sense. if i tried teaching people how to do the things you teach, i would just be like, "just do it like this, it just works like that", and that's not very helpful to anybody lol.

13:03 I love that technique. I like to use it when im playing a dubstep tune with a great intro and build up but the drop is too heavy for the vibe of the room so i quickly switch to a hip hop or r&b tune. Thanks for the vid. Great track selection too. George Benson is too cool

Went to a Motown night last week and I heard a lot of this. for old school dance tunes the cut mix or the fade out/fade in seemed to work best.

Kuddos man! That kind of music is hard to mix. All of the old music is hard to mix. And I really enjoy seeing that there are more djs that try to not get stuck in the same cuts, same mixes, fades, same orders.... it's just annoying. I'm a mobile dj now, but even when I was a club dj I tried to spice things up! Never get stuck in your same mixes or you will get stuck as a dj. Oh and I know way 2 many djs that do that over and over. Same mistakes for years and don't even try to improve. Djs that actually stop the song to start another one hahaha without even fading. Aaaaand yep, that sht has happened to me, don't edit that mistake makes it real. I have even hit cue on the current playing track xD Cheers from Mexico!

The cue can be so bitter sweet! lol Great break down, however I grew up in a skating rink playing wax and these songs, particularly the music you selected, I find to mix, blend, chop etc quite easily together. They all generally have the same beat. What I find difficult is when you get someone who wants a song for example, Garth Brooks, meanwhile your breaking it down with Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force. That takes some creativity! BTW, I'm looking to get one of those LiteConsoles!

sometimes when I'm mixing I suddenly think of the perfect track to bring in when the other one's quiet, and I bring it in out of the blue. turns out great if you do it right. but instead of completely cutting the other one off, I loop a couple bars and let it play along with the other one with the bass sliced in half (or completely). DJing is fun when you allow it to be fun, instead of a job, or instead of thinking you have to follow certain rules. know the music, and make your own rules.

Wish people would stop "hating" on this guy :3 He makes DJing FUN! That's the whole point! You're never going to be the next Guetta or Armin Van Buren (They're "producers" and CD players basically...) but, if you take everything this guy shows you on board, guarentee you'll be 100x better than the above mentioned people in seconds. I don't DJ (I produce - averagely at best) yet, I've learn't more about DJing that watching things like AVB's DJ tutorial by CM Mag for example. He's fantastic!!

There's a genre called "nu disco/indie dance". You can use that to mix out of old school funk music into house or even just use house as a transition. House music came from the ashes of disco. Then you throw it into progressive house or maybe electro and just have fun with it.
