This Django solo is - per usual - pure genius. His harmonic sense is out of this world, especially considering this is a jazz solo from 1937!

I think some of that Django magic is expressed in the subtle syncopated rhythms he employs in his solos. Take pretty much any Django solo and just tap out the rhythm of his solos against a swing beat, and you’ll find it’s already musically sophisticated. You can already hear beginning and ending phrases, questions and answers, etc. It’s all there. Often, to my ear it sounds like something a trained percussionist might choose to play. Something a struggling hot jazz guitarist (like me) can learn from and aspire to.

I love these slowed breakdowns of Django's lines, and relating them to the rhythm chords you can really appreciate how fabulous his note choices were/are. They fly by too fast to hear. You get a pleasing texture at full speed but the lightening fast decisions and perfect ear and precision is mind blowing. I saw Stefan Grapelli and Menuen duetting in the 70's and a similar adult musicality was happening, magic.

Totally agree re Django's genius it feels like any time i try to learn anything Django played there's one curve ball after another, his playing is just so out of the box and ahead of everything else. I do wonder though, when you listen to Grapelli's opening how much one influenced the other, some of the musical motifs that Django and Grapelli share how much of it originated with Django and how much with Grapelli. I would guess there was a lot of cross pollination of musical ideas.

Thanks glassonion and interesting observation. I think you're spot on with your assessment of cross pollination of musical ideas!

@@ChristiaanvanHemert Thanks for the reply and all your hard work Christiaan! Maybe it's already been done but it would be really interesting to see a video breaking down some of Django's influences, which of his ideas were completely original/groundbreaking and which were directly inspired by stuff going on for example in America at the time. I'd love to know more about the genesis of his style and it's place in the overall pantheon of 30/40's era jazz music.

Great video as usual :) Just a quick question. I notice you flick your wrist every time you do consecutive (or double down )downstrokes. For example, at 0:44 in the video. I noticed Stochelo does the exact same thing! Is this part of the technique? I'm struggling to play consecutive downstrokes fast!
@ChristiaanvanHemert
@ChristiaanvanHemert 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed it is! If you hear a soft tapping sound from your fingers hitting the guitar top after a consecutive stroke you know you're on the right track.

Thinner is less noise. Dunlop gator green is a good compromise.
@ChristiaanvanHemert

C Burgess has it right. Thicker picks have a lot of noise. Either live with that or start playing thinner picks (2.0mm or thinner). I'm playing a Wegen Big City pick (1.8 mm) in this video.
