I had the privilege of seeing Grappelli live in concert in Sydney (Australia) in the 1970's. He performed with such warmth and energy. Django Reinhardt plays with the same flair. A style that warms your heart, from a priceless era in music. RIP maestros.

Sadly I never saw Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli play together. But I did see Stephane many times playing the student union bars in London the 1970's. THe first time I saw him live I could not believe just how good he and his band were. And he never stopped smiling,. All talk in the bar stopped and the 100 or so people inside just listened and smiled too. A beautiful man who played beautiful music.

It is worth tying to find some video of Stephane Grappelli playing, just to see his face. Mr. Grappelli ALWAYS played with a sweet smile on his face. When you see his smile and listen to his playing you UNDERSTAND what an expression of PURE JOY and PURE LOVE his playing was and also why it touches people so deeply. It is impossible for me to listen to his playing and now smile from the deepest and best part of my soul.. It is sweet, and sad and beautiful music to love by.. The joy he felt and put into his playing is one of the many reasons why his playing will always be loved and the genius of his playing will transcend time. I feel sad for ANYONE who gives this a thumbs down... They must have a terribly sad life.. His genius is from a time that will never exist again, and we are so luck to be able to hear beautifully restored recordings like this with just a couple of clicks, and for free...

"DITTO" lol I loved hearing and witching a recoding of him playing and I agree with you, watching him was a joy, every time I would hear on the radio that I just missed him playing in Detroit the day after lol I always wanted to go back in time and hear and watch Art Tatum play the piano. One of his contemporary's said of him as he walked into a club that there are musicians here but God just walked in the door. I love all kinds of music , past decades well not so much the music of today..2020 with youtube I can go back in time my time and before and find so much fabulous music . Be safe from Covid and Happy Holidays to you and yours in the coming months Nov 2020. Turning 75 yrs young 11/23 preparing my birthday music for the day;) or year lol;.

Grappelli, sigh..... I actually got to hear him with Dave Grisman in a theater in Davenport, Iowa of all places (in 1982). It was wonderful. The thing that gives me wonder even now is realizing that he was already playing the violin a century ago and that he and Django formed their group ninety years ago!

Nick, this is scarcely credible. I am your cosmic reduplicant from Planet Zwong, and yet I read your post within three minutes. Synchronicity or what? BTW, 'Earth' should have had an upper case 'E'. Despite this linguistic lapse on your part, I agree entirely about your assessment of Django.

My wife and I feel privileged to have attended an outdoor concert of Stephan Grappelli's at the Paul Mason Vineyards above San Jose sometime in the 80's, I think it was the 80's. We wanted to stay there all night but he just got to cold and couldn't take it anymore even though we had all moved all the space heaters around him while the rest of us froze. RIP Stephan, we still enjoy your music.

My Dad got to see Stephane Grappelli with David Grisman at the old Almaden Vineyards in San Jose, CA back in the 1980's. My Dad introduced my other 3 siblings and I to Django Reinhardt back when I was a kid. I always thought Reinhardt and Grappelli were fantastic musicians and very underrepresented in the music scene. I've got Django Reinhardts DJANGOLOGY album which my brother Steve gave me years ago. It has jazz violin player Stephane Grappelli on the fiddle Some of the cuts on the album are like Djangology, which is the title cut, Bricktop, where the guitar clunk clunks, and also I Saw Stars, where Wm. Latimore's Jazz Band backs Django Reinhardt up. -Mark Weintraub.

I'm sure he was from another more advanced planet. My idol for 48 years since finding an obscure album in a Boston discount store in 1970. I also feel that his liability is what made his melodic geneous possible. Using only two fingers, he could play in any direction from any note linearly, not in boxes like every other guitarist.

Excelente!

Django was not unappreciated in his day. In James Jones' monumental novel about soldiers in the Army during the Pearl Harbor attack, From Here to Eternity, some soldiers who are basically hillbilly musicians talk about his music as something almost magical. Not a bad compliment.

""Underappreciated in his day" Might as well have said, The Overused, ( Underrated ) &with all due respect, quote a "Redneck" remark. From a novel. Well & least you've a young reader. Quite rare.
