The song "Kiss You All Over" was written by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, who were known for writing memorable songs during the glam rock fad with Sweet's "Little Willy" the best known. Chapman went on to produce and in the late 70's he was the King!
He was repsonsible for breakout records for groups like Blondie "Heart Of Glass" (#1, 1979) The Knack's "My Sharona" (#1, 1979), Nick Gilder "Hot Child In The City" (#1, 1978) and Exile's take on "Kiss You All Over" which touched me so much, I felt cheap. Exile was #1 for four weeks in the fall of 1978 and when Nick Gilder took the top spot, Chapman joined the very elite in chart acheivements, replacing himself at #1.
Exile was the new name for a country rock group who got their start in Richmond, Kentucky. The Madison Central High School provided teenagers guitarist James Pennington, keyboardist Buzz Cornelison and singer Jimmy Stokely with a common interest and they formed a successful band named Fascinations who played the school dances.
In 1965, still in high school, they changed their names to the Exiles and started working the pub route with a decidedly biker rock group persona underlined by their long hair. Dick Clark found them and invited them to join his "Caravan Of Stars" touring show that led to their meeting 60's heartthrob vocalist Tommy Roe and Tommy James of Shondells who got RCA to take a chance for a single release in 1969 that did not chart.
Another session with RCA led to the band deciding to write and produce their own music on their own dime and approach the west coast labels with demo tapes. By this time they added three more members, Marlon Hargis (keyboards) Steve Goetzman (drums) and bassist Sonny Lemaire.
It was one of those demo tapes that made it to Mike Chapman, who had relocated to southern California and was looking for a group to produce. He agreed to come see the band live at the opening of a new apartment building in Lexington. While the sound was crappy, Chapman realized he had found his group.
He had the band shorten their name to Exile gave them their first Hot100 hit "Try It On" peaked on the chart at #97. With that success, inspired by Barry White's "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me", he wrote and produced a demo version of "Kiss You All Over" that used a primitive drum machine, three guitars and Mike's vocal and gave it to the band telling them "to improvise with it" and left them to it.
They came up with this funky country disco thing that Chapman added atmosphere to and he said about it "that was very much about music in the US is all about in 1978. Americans are big lyric listeners and listen to every word. In Europe, listeners are more into the atmosphere of a record and then they listen to the lyrics". The song has since been designated by Billboard to be the #9 of the top 50 Sexiest Songs Of All Time.
While Exile never reached that height of popularity again on the pop charts, they did successfully transition to country where they earned 10 #1 Country hits with their last charting hit in 1991. James Pennington is the only original member left in Exile as of today.

I was 32 in '78. Best time of my life ! The young foolish side of me was gone and the adult man was in charge. Everything was coming together. New job, new love that lasted for 40 years. Don't regret one minute ! Thanks for the flashback !

What a Time to have grown up to this song. I was 13. just me minding my own. A Vietnamese family moved into the neighborhood and we all embraced them. I remember the first time I saw "Natalie" Voung. She and I were the same age, and I thought she was the prettiest girl I had ever set my eyes on. The first date we had this was playing on the car radio while our parents drive all of us to a local restaurant. She and I held hands in the backseat of the car. Unbeknownst to them. I remember her fondly. But I remember her through this song that came over the radio in the car. I wish I could return to then and tell her that I loved her.

@Jingle Nuts Thank you for your comment. I had all their albums back in the '80's, as I was a young teenager. I wish I still had them. And I had their cassettes too. You can still find cassettes at thrift stores and garage sales. But, if you find any of Exile, they will be pricey. I've seen some cassettes from '80's artists for $10.00 at an Exchange Shop by me.

I was almost 12 yrs old when this song came out and I can still remember where I was and who I was with when I heard it for the first time. I had a "boyfriend" at the time that was in my class and I thought I was so mature and grown up about it, that it was never gonna end...the whole nine yards of an "adult relationship" when in fact it was just all puppy love (lol). Hey, I had the whole I'm almost a teenager mentality thing going on then, what did I really know about adult relationships (LoL). Now that I am an adult (just turned 57), been married twice, divorced from the first marriage and my 2nd husband of 21 yrs just recently passed away, I wish I still had that 12 yr old's innocents again.

...I was 13 years old then. Part of a certain group of music I'd hear from the radio or blasted by the restaurant at the beach where I'd go swimming in summer. Yet it's toward the end of the time of freer love, expression and such that started in 60's. Also around the time of my first crush. Always thought I needed to have been born 5-10 years earlier. The thought of all that societal progress and where it's all at today sometimes really makes me a bit depressed. Awesome mix tho.

Yeah, surprised it never got a proper 12" release with at least an extended mix. I tried to get the stems awhile back, bc I thought it needed a dub version. Never happened, but yeah I always thought it worked well in a club....it was just too short. Larry played a reel edit of it a few times @ the Garage, but I'd never heard it, or any other version since. I guess Exile going the country music direction after Jimmy Stokely left the band - kept them kind of isolated from anything related to the clubs. Too bad they didn't do a few more jams like this....Jimmy def had the sleaze rock thing down.
