It is beyond human ability to describe the musical genius in this man. I used to sing Sinatra melodies at karaoke at Jimmy's Cafe in the Bronx in the early nineties and Senor Puente would come in and eat dinner and before he left he would come up to the sports bar and listen to me sing. I would see him smile and was thrilled that he would take the time to listen to me., a nobody. I'll never forget that. Here's to you Senor Puente!

Tito came to Singapore right when I was having a kinda Latin grooves moment. I was primed. Concert was in a small jungley bowl down on the beach at Sentosa, a small island off Singapore. I was mad about this beautiful girl from town, a sexy journo, and took her to see it. Tito got everyone dancing, freaking out the security. She and I went down in front of the band, dancing hard. Tito joined us two, sweating it out, shaking like possessed lunatics, and we all laughed and shook it all hard and rough, like we'd die if we stopped. He had that controlled silliness and a sophisticated rhythmic madness that pulled you in, and he kept going, pressing, pushing, groovin' so damn perfectfully. Fuck, what a power he had.

I had the pleasure of meeting him in person in an inagural festivity at the Bank of America building in Charlotte NC back in the early 90's.I can say that besides being a great musician he was also super cool!! Humble ,funny , with a great sense of humor. An amazing human being.there was a Spanish chef cooking a " Paella" in the lobby with a wok looking pan that was like 5 ft in diameter.not exaggerating! Tito and I where laughing so hard joking because the rice was totally under cooked.hard as a rock most of it.ill never forget.he roasted that poor chef.all in good humor.RIP Tito!!!

I got to play (trumpet) with Tito for a guest appearance at my college in the early 90’s. He was just a class act and had stories to tell that I got to share with my kids and hopefully my grandkids someday. Maynard Ferguson was our other guest that we played with that year and had some other great stories about Tito that to this day make me just bust up laughing. The body may leave this earth but true legends never die!

Rough English translation of this fine tribute in Spanish: A standard bearer of knowledge and generator of the necessary personality to orchestrate his musical sensations to the world, he is now a compulsory legend when it comes to Latin music; with Rey label, he is perhaps the most influential Caribbean musician in the United States and the world, owner of a histrionic capacity with exceptional instrumental ability, always accompanied by the most renowned musicians of our sonorities; today it is, by antonomasia, the legend of Latin music; A KING CALLED TITO BRIDGE ... !!! Born on April 20, 1923, in a public hospital in Harlem, Ernesto Antonio "Tito" Puente Ortiz, son of Mr. Ernesto Puente Sr., foreman of a razor blade factory and Mrs. Ercilla Ortiz; Established in 1850 Madison Avenue, the Hispanic Harlem, now known as "The neighborhood", had come from Puerto Rico in that wave of migration at the close of the First World War, as part of those first marginal settlements in the districts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, looking for job opportunities in the various factories established there, having cheap labor. In his childhood, he lived in so many places in the neighborhood, which he expressed, it was difficult to remember a specific place, he explained that for that time there were so many empty apartments that to attract residents, the owners offered up to two months of free rent. Unfortunately when the new century began; is submitted on May 31, 2000 in the city of New York, to an open heart surgery, which had been postponed for a long time according to Celia Cruz, who by that time was making presentations in Argentina; at midnight after 17 exhausting hours with the doctors loses the battle, his heart does not resist and the great Ernesto Anthony Puente Jr, was 77 years old. It's been 15 years since his departure and without a doubt our hearts are still linked to the life he printed with his drumsticks on a timbal that used to become the spokesman for Latin music in the whole world, this man who learned to laugh at himself same, this tireless manager and broadcaster, is part of "The Celestial All Stars" as it was and will be: "A KING CALLED TITO PUENTE"
