DJI Action 4 Knows Something About GoPro 12...

A strange release by DJI, the Osmo Action 4. Knowing full well the Gopro 12 is coming in a few months. Usually they release much later. Strange because it doesn't even match the Gopro 11 specs. A nice new bigger sensor with lower megapixels, that's the perfect action camera right there. But why didn't any specs increase? We're stuck with 4k 120p and HD 240fps for over 3 years now. Best action camera is the Sony x3000 :)

Compelling upgrade for me. I have the original and it's great but the battery life and heat generation leaves a lot to be desired. If they release an updated version with a die shrink and a bigger sensor then that sounds like a good time to me. If anything it'd be nice if I could mount a lens with a longer focal length as it'd easily beat Cannon and nearly match Sony&Fuji in bright day light for a fraction of the cost.

Smart release for DJI. The biggest improvement over gopro is……..it ACTUALLY WORKS when you need it too. My experience with DJI vs GoPro is the “hero” overheats, freezes, drops files, etc and so forth. Last “good” hero was the 5. DJI worked for me everytime I hit the button. EVERYTIME.

DJI filter hack - put both rubber rings over the filter ring, get a 40.5-43mm upstep ring adapter, slide onto rubber rings, put on 43mm Diffusion, +1 close focusing, lens cap or whatever filters, credit to this gentleman - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHicqItqYrRrrLM I might consider the Action 4 for a second camera for motorcycle/low light as I use an Action 3 already, the incremental upgrade is a plus as the batteries etc are all the same and use the rubber ring method to ad filters etc.

They really sent those action cams to every small youtuber, hoping they will praise it to be better than Hero 11. Which they did. Sad. As a consumer, I'd be pretty happy to see them dethrone GoPro but, for now, that's not the case. They are close tho. Then, as you said, Hero 12 will hit them. I still do not understand why no Action cameras have the standard 3.5 jack. Even if there is some limitation why, the initial Action (1) had probably the best 3.5 accessory which felt solid and was not a large dongle hanging off the side which over time will mess up the USB-C port. DJI should have worked with CYNOVA company for them to release their small adapter for all all the DJI Action iterations. GoPRo solution is just too bulky for a 3.5 mm jack.

IDK, the night video I've seen looks so much nicer than like 99% of the other action cameras. To me, that would be a defining factor, but I guess I'll hold off on making more statements until GoPro can drop something that looks somewhat okay in lower light situations, since it's usually dog water.

I had the GoPro11 and even as a casual user I finally got fed up with the piss poor reliability. I ditched it for the Action 3 a few months ago and have been pretty happy with the Action. I just pre-ordered the Action 4 and sold my Action 3 for a relatively small loss. Why? Primarily for the improved low light performance. From the videos I've seen, it is quite a noticeable difference. The 10-bit in normal mode is another significant improvement over the Action 3. Also happy to get the automatic selfie stick removal feature, but that's just a nice bonus to me. I will admit, if you are looking for the best slo-mo capability, this is not the Action's strong point. For me, 4k/120 is enough. If I occasionally want more, Topaz Video AI does a good job at filling in frames to slow it down further. Side note...great content. You are one of the few KZbinrs I trust to give a no bullshit opinion on camera gear.

Osmo 4 Seems a few weeks early to decide. This is comparing the new DJI model to the old GoPro model. It seems as many free cameras as DJI sent out they may feel the need to get some cameras sold early! Maybe they know something we don't. If we wait a few weeks we might be able to make a more informed decision. I don't have a dog in the fight but I'm also not in a hurry and this seems rushed to market. It might not change anything when the 12 comes out but I'll wait and see. All I'm saying is most companies understand timing. 🤷‍♂️

There never was a focus issue. Larger sensor = shallower depth of field. In every video where someone complained about focus issues the background was super ultra sharp like from a smartphone, it was just their faces that were blurry, because they were within minimum focusing distance. These action cameras do not have focus motors, the lens is focused at infinity and glued in place.

I think the DJI now has filter threads in the actual camera because they are releasing some and filters along with the camera edit - meant to type "ND" filters, not "and" filters.

@@cameraconspiracies, I saw one YT’er installed the protective ring on A3 and then use a 40.5mm adapter to screw on any filters you already have. I use an additional 40.5 to 52mm and filters I have. Hope this one is same and we can use at 42-43mm adapter

Great honest and intelligent video… I don’t subscribe to much, but you get the button mash. Manufacturer’s need to put more thought into the practicality behind their products/releases. The largest for GoPro right now being operational reliability. I think DJI released ahead because it’s just one more reliable version of the Action in their ecosystem. Doesn’t take much to put the nail in the coffin. You’re 100% right… the majority don’t need to chase down every single release of camera. We need specific features and once they are met… time to move on.

IMHO the rumors are almost certainly incorrect. You're simply not going to get a 1 inch sensor AND 4k 240fps AND 8k 30fps in a $400 camera. Maybe in an 800-1000 camera (i.e. more directly in line with the 1-inch Sony RX0 but leapfrogging it in specs), but that would mean 2 different cameras since GoPro wouldn't abandon the $400 price point. AND of course, there is the question of whether we can actually trust GoPro to deliver usable 4k 240fps when they already have major heat management problems with 4k 120fps? (not to mention that delivering this would absolutely mean a brand new 1" sensor that we've never seen before, which seems like a stretch for GoPro)

But the real question is, why would anyone need 480. Isn't 240 is too much when you slow it to 24? For a normal consumer like me who likes road trip, the spec is far more enough, no need to push it too hard. Might as well perfect other aspects like build quality, over heat, mount (oh yea the mount is definately kicked the shit out of Gopro). Still yea, I think you are correct, DJI must know something about Gopro. My guess is they are gonna release a firmware update that open tons of option more to compete with Gopro 12.

@bayern1806 I have them both... I think the GOPro has its strengths but overall the Action 4 is a better device. The H11 has several problems (don't get me started on the Mini) that the Action 4 just doesn't have and the A4 has a bunch of features the GPH11 doesn't that make the user experience better. Again, I don't have an "opinion", I have both cameras.

@definingslawek4731 Yea, in my opinion, the GP11 edges out the A4 in some situations but the A4 is better in low-light situations. It's tough to call. If you're already a "GoPro person", stick with GP, if you don't have an Action camera or real brand preference, I'd go with the DJI. If nothing else the insurance is cheaper, you can get a preview on your phone while recording, the magnetic mount is underrated, you can use GyroFlow (free), the front screen is a touchscreen, there are just a bunch of features that can be kinda handy.

I prefer the fact that the DJI Osmo Action cameras won't overheat and shut down in 30 min of recording or when charging the battery internally. Worst case with the DJI is that if it does overheat, it keeps recording. I can guarantee that my hero 10 will overheat shooting 4K if its not in moving air withing 30 min. Never had that issue with my DJI Osmo camera.

That's the biggest thing for me as well. If I want to record more than 30 minutes I have to take the door off the battery compartment of the GoPro 11. I really hope GoPro ups their heat dissipation game this year with the 12, otherwise I'm getting the action 4 for this issue alone.

Osmo 3 does have a cage for vertical imagery. Filters screw in replacing lens cover. However thread dimensions are apparently different between 3 and 4. That said just wait 6 months and a few updates when comparing gopro and osmo. It's the DJI way.

Looking forward to recording on both the G9 M2 and the Iphone 15 ProMax Untra in Prores at 2Gigabits per second!! That is the ultimate! maybe both of them will record in 4k 240p? or 6k 120p? Faster, higher, farther!!
