Hi Pascal! I love seeing HDR content. I’ve been trying it myself for a bit and it’s been a big learning curve through trial and error. I’m not the biggest expert but If you’re interested I’d love to pass on some tips I’ve learned while attempting HDR grading.

@@pascalbasel OK! This is going to be a little bit of an information dump. For the most part keep in mind that everything bellow is kind o subjective and these are just methods I’ve discovered that give me consistent results between the Resolve Viewer, QuickTime playback, and the YT player. I’m going to break this into two parts. First I’ll address the philosophy of HDR then I’ll walk you through a project setup. I’m going to make a few assumptions for this. A. I’m assuming you’re using an XDR display for grading. Either the one in MacBooks or the full desktop. (If not that’s ok just set your display color space appropriately.) B. This is a given, you’re using resolve to color grade. So to get started on a brief and simple explanation of what HDR is, it allows you to have a lot more contrast while preserving colors creating a brighter more lifelike image and retain more detail. I’ve determined through observation that there’s a few schools of thought as to how you should color grade in HDR. For the most part you generally only see two major styles of grades. There’s images on the super colorful side that really pop like when you walk into an electronic store and they have demo footage playing on screens. Those images are usually super bright, contrasty, saturated, insanely sharp, and they’re using every nit of brightness to showcase what HDR is. They're usually very bright and besides making a sweet demo reel you won’t see that style much anywhere else. Then on the other hand there’s the “Hollywood” school of thought which is just the opposite. When you watch a movie in HDR the thing you will start to catch onto is that they don’t ever really push their image contrast to the bright side of the spectrum and even though they could they often don’t even touch it. Colors usually stays on the darker side of things and colors that would suppress a normal SDR brightness are usually specifically reserved for the specular highlights like the sun, light sources, or reflections. Now this is where things get a little subjective. The thing that sets HDR apart from SDR is the white point. In SDR (REC709) white is white. It’s a fixed point with RGB values maxed out. You can’t go brighter and if you go darker it gets gray and eventually black. But in HDR the white point is not fixed. In fact it can be dynamic based off the desired brightness of your image. Industry standard however has determined that the graphic white level (for text, graphics, titles) is about 203 nits. Which is kinda dark when you think about HDR grading in 1,000 nits. But again Hollywood likes to keep things on the darker side of the spectrum. In fact, in a study conducted by the NHK images with an average luminance of less than 25% of the peak brightness (1000nits) were considered comfortable to audiences whereas images that exceed 25% of the average luminances where considered too bright. In another study by the BBC when audiences watched images with a peak luminances of 1000 nits and an average brightness of 268 nits they were uncomfortably bright. However when they were showen images with the same 1000 nit peak but with an average of 144 nits in luminance they were considered comfortable. So I think the moral of the story is that just because you can push an image supper blindingly bright and vibrant doesn’t necessarily mean you should if you’re trying to make a cinematic image appealing to viewers. Of course art is subjective and it all depends on what you’re trying to convey. Now onto how I would set up a project in Resolve to get consistent results. 1st - If your using an XDR display on a Mac the first thing you should do is open up the settings app and go to display settings. change the display preset to “HDR Video (P3-ST 2084)”. You’ll notice that the display likely got a little dimmer and the brightness is locked so you cannot adjust it. This is good so automatic brightness doesn’t start drifting while you’re grading thus ruining your grade. Grading will best be done in a dark room with no other light sources. 2nd - In Resolve open up Preferences and go to the General tab. Check both boxes for “Use 10-bit precision in viewers when available” and “Use Mac display color profiles for viewers” 3rd - In Resolve open up project settings and go to color management. Select an HDR color processing mode. I prefer to use DaVinci Wide Gamut. Then under output color space scroll down and select REC.2020 ST2084 1000nits. You should now be able to see HDR in the resolve viewers Under that you can also check the box for “HDR mastering for 1000 nits”. This won’t affect what you see on Mac displays but rather gets embedded over an HDMI monitoring signal so any monitoring display you are using is displaying your image correctly. 4th - On the color page go to your scopes and under waveform click the three dot menu and under “Waveform Scale Style” select “HDR ST2084/HLG”. Your waveform is now showing you luminance in terms of nits rather than pixel values. You’ll also notice that the scale on the waveform goes up to 10,000 nits. It’s unnecessary for our purposes because we are grading for 1,000 nits so we will only be using this to make sure our waveform doesn’t go past 1,000 nits. With that all set up you’re ready to start grading. 5th - KZbin does have their standards for delivery that you can look up on their support pages. I like to use H.265 with a bit rate of 50,000 Kb/s. Other than you should be able to leave all the other settings the same and render the project for upload. Additionally you should be enable HDR10+ and enable it on the delivery page and it will embed metadata about your HDR project that YT should be able to see as well. I hope this helps! If you have any questions ask away

@@AaronandTaylor Thanks for the super long comment. That mostly confirms that what I did was right haha. I also came to the conclusion that color grade should be more like the cinema standard after a few days of research. I set one line in the Resolve scopes at 203 nits for my whites (I saw many HDR videos where the titles etc. looked way too bright as they didn't keep it like that). There is an option somewhere in Resolve to fix the white for titles etc. at 203 as well. I also try to put my soft whites, like clouds etc around that area. Then I have another line at 500 nits and try as much as possible to stay under that line, except for direct lights and reflections. That assures that HDR looks great even on 500nits MacBooks. Usually, 540 would be correct as far as I read, but I think 500 makes more sense for that reason. I also turned HDR10 on in Resolve and embedded the HDR10+ metadata via Resolve in the H265 file to ensure KZbin doesn't mess up the SDR version. It would be great to have more control over it on Resolve thought. It's basically just a button press to analyse the clips. In SDR, I always notice a color shift between my Mac Displays and my Android TV because of that Mac 1.96 Gamma and 2.4 on the TV... so I hope HDR is a solution for that. Of course, therefore SDR displays don't show it the same... Would be great to have a proper standard for every device.
@AaronandTaylor
@AaronandTaylor 10 ай бұрын
@@pascalbasel I need to experiment more with HDR10+ as that's something new to me. Getting a better SDR grade out of an HDR render is proving tricky. In SDR grading, that Gamma shift you mentioned on Mac, you should be able to set your output color space to REC709-A. You can also use resolves color management or CSTs to use REC709-A as the input for Gamma 2.4 clips too. I think we're talking about the same gamma shift and REC709-A was made by BMD to specifically correct for that shift between Macs P3 displays and normal rec709 displays.
@pascalbasel
@pascalbasel 10 ай бұрын
@@AaronandTaylor I do that Rec709-A stuff. That only ensures that it looks good across Quicktime, KZbin etc. on Apple Devices. But when you use other devices, the gamma is displayed wrong. There doesn't seem to be a solution to that.
