took out my 7 " today with the DJI installed. so ...for all those saying they will wait because it will get better smaller cheaper …..sure it will ! That's LIFE ! but when is it "good enough" ? when is the range far enough ?? etc etc etc I am retired and fly FPV EVERY DAY and I want every morsel of beautiful video experience NOW !!!! I am not waiting for "someday" ...I purchased extra AirModule/cameras and I will slowly convert over / build a small quiver of HD Kwads. I have been dreaming of converting a Mavic Pro to acro capability and fly out 30 minutes ...with return to home capability. we are close ! oh so close ...these are great times to be into FPV !!!!!!!

I’m so relieved. That was EXACTLY the same as my experience. JB: “It isn’t as good at analog down this road I never fly anyway.” But EVERYWHERE else it’s like flying with a freaking GoPro and half my review was say WOW. But that is just what it’s like. I’m glad you tried them on the same quad at the same time. I thought about it but just figured it would blast each other so I built the one that as you mentioned probably made someone die inside. We see you fly all the time in the same spot. That is what most of us do. And if you fly and it looks good with analog will look amazing with this.

Bought mine on release day as well. I have no regrets! I’m up in NH (similar countryside) and the HD truly is like flying again for the first time. I think your review truly hit the topic right in the gut. The ability to have real time, fair weather hd is incredibly up there, game changing! But there are practical limitations to ones full adoption of it *in certain niches* . And again, the changing latency can be a critical crutch in high proximity, tight areas where any change is fatal to the kwad. That being said, imagine this on a flying wing! Or high altitude cruiser!

why is everyone judging the dji system by its weakest point.. the latency.. just use it how you are already use analog (basically right next to you) and BOOM.. it’s 10x better.. the added range (at the cost of latency) is just a bonus for people flying long range or whatever. At its core it’s almost identical to our analog systems except High Def and even faster than most analog cam/vtx setups.. is it worth the pricetag? That depends..
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 5 жыл бұрын
Watch the test carefully. The analog system and the DJI system have similar maximum range, but the analog system maintains low latency to the edge of range, while the DJI system starts to falter at perhaps 75%. In addition, the DJI system's changing latency can catch the pilot out and cause a crash if it happens in a very technical location. On the flip-side, the DJI system is absolutely glorious when flying in HD, and it is really like seeing FPV for the first time again.
@MaxBeamer
@MaxBeamer 5 жыл бұрын
Joshua Bardwell yeh I noticed in your test that was the case but you live in the boonies where analog prosper lol DJI’s anti interference characteristics didn’t get a chance to shine! Also My point was If you use it for normal close-medium range freestyle (like how we use analog most of the time) there won’t be a noticeable change in latency.. sounds like a lot of positives to me!

YAY I feel like you're finally starting to understand my viewpoint on FPV and analog quads, and it makes me feel like i'm not alone, lol. I've been flying a Phantom 4 for medium distance cruising/exploring with the Goggles RE (that I love, even though you didn't) - and flying in HD FPV with full 2 axis head tracking - being able to look around with the goggles and see in any direction you point your head, is so surreal, you start to forget you're flying R/C ! Same thing when I fly my airplanes and wings with Occusync Air. To go from that experience, to flying a Tiny Whoop with a 25mW VTW in analog is... jarring! It feels ... antiquated. Limited. Until I start flying my Tiny Whoop through dining room chairs and things like that. Then I remember the feeling of being miniature. And it's OK again. But to fly an analog 5"? Well, the 5" felt like it had neither of those aspects. This new system could get me interested in flying 5" again. Too bad I can't use my Goggles RE with it and save a ton of money...
@philcal
@philcal 5 жыл бұрын
I fitted DJI FPV to my Source One and took it out to the local track. The frequencies don't match regular FPV so I flew between races. It's not clear to me which raceband frequencies impact which DJI frequencies. Unlike analogue where you get ghosts and interference, if someone plugs in on an overlapping or nearby frequency you get a complete video freeze, and lose control because the controller is on the same 5.8GHz video frequency. In one case my quad spun inverted into the ground at full power unrelated to control inputs, and the disarm took a second or two to respond. That loss of control could be really dangerous, not to mention digging unnecessary holes into the ground. None of the above is unexpected after reading about the system, and I absolutely LOVE the quality of the video. My experience did however confirm for me that the DJI system is not yet practical near a normal race track. Even if compatible frequencies can be worked out, it might be worth sticking with crossfire for the controller, so you can push through a second or two of bad video without the drone going mental, and you can disarm it if it does. I am totally happy with the system. The video quality is truly amazing and really helped my flying, and I'll be saving that for freestyle until the frequency overlap problems are resolved. This is new technology and DJI are pushing regular updates, so this amazing system is only going to get better. For racing though I'll stick with my Crossfire and Unify VTXs.

@@kwboost yeah the thing is... with analogue in the EU I can still fly 200mw or more if I want. Mostly I'm flying at 200mw. The DJI system won't let me unlock to higher rates. So basically it's useless when flying freestyle. Not sure how the FatShark system will deal with that but if it is not locked or able to unlock then that might be a better option at the end. Depending on how it performs of course. Right now I'm waiting to see more results and till the FS is released officially. Not buying a DJI set.

Josh, You are 120% correct on the addiction of flying FPV with this HD goggles and I'm 200% agreed with you that. I have two of the DJI Air units on my 5-inch quad now and let me tell you. I just don't want to put on my Fatshark with Rapidfire any more. That's is a big difference on my part that to just want to fly with HD goggles because like you said I can see every tiny object very clearly when I fly. That what makes me want to fly HD more. U da man, Josh!!
@MrVlodato
@MrVlodato 5 жыл бұрын
its a really hard comparison. because even though you can go farther on analog i rather go half the distance maybe even 25% of the difference in HD. To me i would be fine having an analog rig and an HD rig. Your not going to drop your gear anyway since you need it for whoops and micros. Why worry about whats better when you can just have both. Its like choosing between a 5" and a micro, why not just both. If you can only afford one i think you should still go analog especially for new pilots who tend to have heavy crashes that could potentially damage the HD system that we dont know about yet.

When other companies weigh in on the HD FPV scene it'll be like Apple vs Android, DJI vs everyone else, so bring on the other future HD systems because I'm happy with my Android phone as it has features the iPhone doesn't, like a 10,300mAh battery (I charge it at most twice a week). nearly 300gb storage (64gb internal, 256gb micro SD), and structural strength good enough to smash walnuts and bang nails into wood, with the screen...

I think the most important point is the one he made about not going back to SD. Once you have had a 60'' HD TV who wants to go back to a 24'' SD TV? As far as lag this is an issue but only when at extream ranges that depends on how often you fly out far. For some people who do lots of long-range stuff, this will be a show stopper. But for people who spend much of the time within 500m, it will not be an issue.

Its interesting to think about that the look of the location you are flying could cause video quality to change. Fly around a solid colored room vs flying through a crazy graffiti-ed bando. Different Bit rates are needed. Assuming it uses normal HD compression stuff.
@sallerc
@sallerc 5 жыл бұрын
Don't think they do compression actually, it would reduce latency quite a bit... Also at 11MBit/s you would get a much better picture quality than JB got @ 9:52 if it was compressed. At least with something like mpeg4/h.264, they possibly compress each frame (like MJPEG).

Just remember... this is dji version 1. First release and it’s already comparable to some of the best analog systems that have been in the field for years. Give it some time and some development and within 2 years these systems will be able to compete with or even outperform current analog systems all while giving you the insane high definition experience. It seems like when you keep this system within its reasonable limits it still performs amazingly well. It’s only when you really push it that you get into trouble and that will improve quickly with time

Thank you, Joshua, for a great breakdown and a very honest appraisal. I do believe this system might be successful in the USA but here in Europe it will be a very good expensive novelty. By this I mean the EU version will be hard limited to 25milliwatt, even for those of us with an exemption to run higher power. It maybe possible to bypass this restriction using a VPN when connected to the DJI Assistant but its an app expensive maybe. If you get the opportunity to do a test of the DJI system on 25milliwatts it will be of great benefit for those of us in the EU to see the real, or lack of, performance. Regards Nidge.

The DJI system got a lot of hate on stinger's channel, even I left a little skeptical. (Lots of blah, blah, X,Y,Z was paid by DJI ty Stinger!) However I was looking forward to your no BS review of the system to be sure, the DJI system looks fantastic. I think there are some situations where analog may have an edge in freestyle flying. However 99% of the time the extra clarity with hardly any breakup would vastly increase your confidence level.

I think that's also a big problem to keep in mind. The same goes for there drones. They are so smart and adjust the output power based on location. Its hard too fool the system. The problem here: In Europe, for example Germany it is only allowed to fly on 25mW on 5GHZ. I think some people can't imagine such a limitation. You can fly on 2,4GHZ but the Antennas are bigger and this band is entirely filled with trash. So you will get propably better range on 5GHZ on the same power. But all Pilots I know are flying on way higher output powers. Understandable cuz 25mW is a biglimitation. So you simply buy a more powerful VTX and shh, nobody cares. But with DJI. Imagine you only get it working on 25mW. The range wouldn't be impressive. Maybe 100m with obsticales. So thats a big problem...
@MariomasterNSMBHD
@MariomasterNSMBHD 5 жыл бұрын
Leandro Ebner Yeah I am from Germany as well and ofc I would never *cough* use more than 25 mW. But the DJI FPV system is actually easy to fool. It has no GPS and fetches the location when you register it. A VPN at that stage easily fools it. You can also reregister it. That has to be possible because one should be able to travel with the system.

I think this & Stingy's last video on this system combined provide the best summary for those who have not experienced it yet. I'm sitting on the fence for a while. Want to see what Fat Shark bring to the table, then I'll probably wait a year or so & wait for the tech to mature as it is still early days & to be honest, analogue works fine for what I currently do. One things for certain, we're in some exciting times of development & innovation for FPV. Its been fairly stagnent with pretty much fake hype & small but not hugely significant developments the past 3 years.

Good review. But one thing I don’t understand is why no reviewers mention that as you change the latency setting on the goggles, this picture quality changes. With low power mode on you get about 60ms of latency and the picture is amazing. But if you turn low power off and get 28ms latency the picture quality goes down drastically

Hi Joshua, I wondering about how the reliability of the digital vs analog system is. I have a dji camera drone and very seldom (one a month) it produces complete connection loss even on short distance (100 meters). On camera drone this is no issue because until the image signal comes back I just let it hover. For fpv this is something you can’t simply do. Do you know of this is already addressed for digital dji fpv?

Does the digital system still have the same laws as analog? Specifically, do you need to have a HAM license in the U.S. to legally fly?
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 5 жыл бұрын
The DJI system is Part 15 certified which means you do NOT need a ham license to use it legally. Most people flying FPV don't have a ham license anyway, but if you actually care about the law, the DJI system has that going for it.

@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 4 жыл бұрын
I don't fly with the DJI controller but it's a good controller and I don't think the sticks feel bad. The latency of the DJI system can be felt if you fly back to back with a very low latency analog system. But you know what else is different with DJI? Your ability to see where you're going. And that goes a long way to making up the difference in latency.

@Honeypot-x9s
@Honeypot-x9s 5 жыл бұрын
For fixed wing get the DJI Occusync video system you can port video and controls over the link it probably also little less expensive. Occusync has slightly more delay than this system (which is fine for fixed wing) but massively more range because able to change channels on the fly seamlessly to avoid interference and supports higher quality live video. Downside being u can’t use these googles and it isn’t as complete of a system. I terms of range this system is only rated for about 2 miles in clear open air, maybe able to get little more. But occusync the rated range is easily beatable the biggest limitation I run into is battery. I taken my mavic pro out 4.1 miles and back on a near suicide run, the entire time crossing open water until last mile on the run out.. and had 4/5 bars signal even orbiting the water tower which is also a cell tower.

I don't know if DJI would do this or not, but I feel like they could come up with a lot more settings to allow a pilot to adjust how they want the signal to degrade. I know they have some already, but like a super advanced secret menu for crazy people or something :) They could potentially allow a pilot to lock the latency at say 35ms and let the video get really bad or allow others to set the system to have high latency but the picture almost never degrades. Maybe a black and white mode if that uses less bandwidth? Anyway, curious to see what they do with firmware updates in the future.
