The new Mini 2 has a problem when filming in certain conditions; the camera gimbal dips down or slants sideways and ruins any video you're filming. So I explain why there seems to be an issue with Sports Mode and the camera and gimbal on the Mini 2. I also who how to stop the video jumping down and keep the video smooth and cinematic.

If you fly in C mode it will not happen unless there is serious winds and gusts.. But there is an art to moving the gimbal, knowing how your drone will tilt and keep the gimbal within the range so it doesn't hit either limit, this way it will always seem super smooth... Sweet 😁

Actually now that I think about it, you can check some of my last videos, I think this almost doesn't even happen at all to me. I just make sure the camera is not too pointed down nor too pointed up, at about 45 degrees down you should be able to go full speed in S mode and then gently slow down and stop without getting that jerk effect at all.. As long there is offset left between the angle of the drone's forward tilt and the camera's limits there shouldn't be a problem.. Lol Sweet

@@IaninLondon I'm so super happy that you made this video, now I can point it to all these pilots who think their Minis have a problem with the gimbal. You'll be amazed that people don't realize why this happens, meanwhile it's so obvious.. Anyway thank you very much for this video, it really was needed. People should, will just learn with time and experience - how to fly the Mavic Mini or Mini 2 without getting this jerk effect. It's all about accelerating or decelerating gently, a slow change of rate or speed. Also making sure the camera isn't pointed way too much up nor down when speeding in S mode.. Hi Andrew; I'm not so sure as the issue is the physical limit of room for movement, whilst that switch is simply a software element that allows the gimbal to move up beyond 0'. But I'll be playing around more with this setting to see... Cheers, Ian

I can still consider that as something that has to be fixed by DJI. Sports mode is primarily used to add a bit of action in your footage and not just to resist gust wind, therefore when you go in sports mode, you should have the ability to capture the best angle it is capable of. As you see, when the drone moves forward at maximum angle it is initially able to focus the camera straight at the horizon and only flips a bit down suddenly in certain situation. Maybe the gimbal is not strong enough to hold it at that maximum angle or it is the firmware that needs some fix. In short "it's not broken" but I don't think it is a "safety feature."
@IaninLondon
@IaninLondon 4 жыл бұрын
Oh it's defo not a safety feature, but it is a consequence of the increased pitch to fight strong wind better which then stops your drone being blown away..... There was a similar issue with the Air 2 that they fixed by a firmware upgrade to control the pitch better; hopefully they'll do the same here...

I contacted DJI and they said: The gimbal will sometimes move straight down during flight, as the aircraft's attitude is too large and the nose is tilted too far forward. To avoid reaching the limit, the gimbal will move downward. The issue mainly appears in the following scenarios: 1. When the aircraft flies forward against the wind, a larger attitude is required in order to resist the wind turbine, and the gimbal is relatively easy to hit the upper limit. It is recommended to adjust the gimbal downward or slow down the flight speed. 2. When the aircraft is flying forward, move the gimbal upward. If the gimbal is close to the limit, it will automatically move downward. It is recommended not to move the gimbal up to the top when flying forward. 3. When the aircraft flies backward, and the control sticks are suddenly released, the attitude of the aircraft will change too much due to the rapid braking. It is recommended to slow down the drone slowly and gently release the control sticks when flying backward. 4. When the drone is flying forward in S-mode, the flight speed is faster, and the attitude of the aircraft is larger. It is recommended to adjust the gimbal's movement downward or control the aircraft to avoid sudden changes in speed.?

I think the problem is that it is very difficult to predict exactly when this will happen as there are multiple factors involved such as speed and wind conditions. This has the potential to ruin a perfectly executed shot. Perhaps it would have been better for the drone to default to flying within the gimbal's tolerances and give the user the option to switch into a higher power mode when conditions get rough but then you know it might cause issues?

That didn't help. After the latest update it did seem to improve it where it only does it in sport mode. I'm hoping they will fix it. It doesn't seem to do it in all the drones as I've seen many videos of it (unless they are not posting it) Some are even having a side tilt, probably for the same reason you've stated. @IaninLondon 4 жыл бұрын
I'm unsure if that actually gives more clearance tho. There's a physical limit of the body of the drone, and that won't change if you enable the gimbal to go beyond 90'.... Maybe needs more testing.

@@IaninLondon Actually this allows the gimbal to go further than 90 degrees (actually let's call this 0 degrees). It is the option called : "Allow Upward Gimbal Rotation". Guys, this is clearly a firmware/software issue! Last year I've been on vacation twice with my Mini 2. So in Austria and Norway. Flew in different modes over snowy mountains, a sea and large lakes, in strong wind and also light rain, but I swear that I have never experienced this issue before. All shots were smooth as hell. After a certain firmware/software update it starts to occur regularly, especially during QuickShots. I remember there was a tool for the Mini 1 to downgrade the firmware. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of this tool. But downgrading the firmware might fix the gimbal jump/kick issue. It's a pity that DJI does not allow the user to downgrade the firmware in case of such issues!

Thanks for this, Been out with the Mini 2 for few test flights and I am actually experiencing this in Normal mode at low height with very little wind so I am not sure if this unit is faulty or these Mini 2's just can't be flown and capturing footage in anything other than Cine mode which is a bit disappointing, It also did it with an Auto return to home in Normal mode also and that day was very calm and it was only 100 ft up, Will give it a few more go's depending on the weather and see what happens.

It's worse if you're flying sideways.... and most apparent when you have the gimbal up as high as it will go. Try enabling the upward gimbal option allowing it to go up an additional 15' above the horizon

@@IaninLondon Cheers I didn't know that either thanks for the tip, I already have the upwards rotation enabled, Just checked the logs and it was only around 9 m/s about 20mph when it happened also which seems odd at the height and little wind there was, However I could see quite a bit of the horizon so maybe tilting it down a bit more may solve it, Thanks mate.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced skew pictures being taken while taking a wide pano. The photos on the left and right are taken at an angle. Someone said this was normal as this happened on his Mavic Air 2 as well but this has never happened on my Mavic 2 Pro. I suspect that it might be wind that the gimbals is not able to deal with. I did not get any wind warning but it did seem to work better at lower altitudes which makes me think its a wind issue.

Hi Ian! I learned something new today, or at least I now understand. Thank you for this video. What about when you see footage like jumping. Is that because I change the speed when I am editing a video at 30fps, or it's the gimbal struggling because of the speed, wind, maybe the CPL filter weigh, or gimbal angle? The last video, I uploaded yesterday (July 15, 2021), has some footage that doesn't look cinematic at all. I uploaded it, because my audience will watch it anyway, but for me, those footages look awful. My drone is the DJI Mini 2. Thank you mate. Best regards from Florida. 🙂🙏

I think my gimbal is actually flawed. It drifts to the left and right quite frequently, and sometimes very far distances. (My mini 1 doesn't do this) Also, when in RTH and I descend, the gimbal will start glitching out to the left and then return to center repeatedly. I already talked to DJI and they want me to send it back. Such a shame, I haven't even had it a week and I was loving it, now I have to send it back. Oh well, at least I still got the original mini!

The left stick rotates and will be very sudden; the right stick is simply moving the whoel drone left or right, so will be much smoother... You can adjust the speed of rotation to slow that down.. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKvbeK1sob9pl7s

This is a very common problem with mini 2 users. The gimbal abruptly kicks up from 90 degrees to approx 10 higher for no apparent reason regardless of mode, wind speed, flight direction. No solution as of yet. Even happens while holding the gimbal wheel forcing it downward. It will still kick up, then return to fully downward position.

So really the new mini doesn't have better wind resistance it just allows for more pitch to fight the wind. They could probably patch the old mini with firmware to allow almost the same wind resistance but probably won't since it's a new 'feature'. This is what I figured when I saw a lot of the mini 2 videos with weird gimbal tilting.
