In this video I emphasize the importance of regular inspection and a pre-flight check of your DJI Mini 3/4 Pro’s propellers to maintain safe and stable flight. I take you through removing the old propellers and installing the new ones correctly while sharing plenty of tips and tricks along the way.
As always, thanks for watching!
PS Lots of folks have been complaining in the comments about tight screws on the Mini 3 Pro. While making this video I did have one screw that was abnormally tight however I was still able to remove it with the DJI screwdriver. The supplied DJI screwdriver is admittedly pretty crappy but it has always done the job for me for all three of my Minis. If you end up with a stripped screw head, this video demonstrates one method to remove it - • DJI Mini Series | Remo...

nobody says what to do when the screws are too tight, but I found the best fix. I fixed it and I'll tell you how. I tried every method from, latex glove, rubber band, super glue, soldering the screw to the screw driver. What I ended up doing was, carefully burning the plastic around the screw with a soldering iron. I didn't burn too deep cause I didn't want to melt the thread stem. After I carefully melted the propeller plastic, I was able to grip the screw with needle nose pliers and unscrew them. No damage was done to the stems or the drone.

That is a tricky situation. The included screw driver may not be sufficient to remove screws that are too tight. I would recommend using a larger, higher quality screwdriver that will hopefully give you a better fit and enough torque to remove them. I had some pretty tight screws that I was able to remove with the included screwdriver but just barely. was quite worried about shredding the top of the screw. That is part of the reason it is one and done with the screws. Good luck!

@@gianisaerialuniverse-jn2nphe reason they recommend using the screwdriver they enclose is because it has the right size tip for those particular screws but also because they designed it to be that particular length because even if you apply/use the same exact amount of force on a screwdriver with a longer handle, it will produce more torque which might result in either overtightening the screws and/or stripping them, which is not a good thing!

Again, overall a very informative video. While it isn't bad advice to suggest that propellers get changed in pairs from the same bag, I seriously doubt the necessity to do so. After watching this video I wanted to see how equally weighted two propeller from the same bag were. On a jewelry scale, accuracy to 0.01grams, I measured two propeller from the same bag. One weight 0.93 grams and theother 0.95 grams. Not a big difference by anyone's perspective, but not identical. So how much maximium difference could there be if you only changed one prop? I suggest very little. We have to remember that the fast part of the prop, the end, is the thinnest part and would have the least discrepancy from prop to prop. I doubt that DJI is as careful with matching props. Secondly, ditch that toy screw driver and get a good one. The DJI supplied one works in a pinch. But I've found that the screws on the props that came from the factory are so tight that if you can't put enough pressure on the screw you risk stripping the head of the screw...and then you're scrood. Also, because pressure is needed to unscrew and rescrew props, get something to support each arm on while you're doing it. Also, I found that unscrewing each screw and rescrewing at home, "prophylactically" (just because) with support breaks any stuck screw that is over-locked into place at the factory. It will be much easier if you have to change props in the field later on. FYI, I bought this screw driver from Amazon. I would not have been able to successfully change my props with the supplied toy screwdriver. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LCHYO8E/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks. You're bang on with the DJI supplied screwdriver. It's the safe choice for most though and yes, in a pinch it's good enough. I will definitely have a look at the driver you suggested. Changing in pairs from the same package is straight from DJI and it would be reckless of me to suggest folks do otherwise. I totally agree with you though, it seems a wasteful and likely unnecessary. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Cheers!

@@SteveCoutts In one respect it might make sense to change both propellers as it is likely that if you damage one you'll damaget its "partner". But I had a situation where my Mini 3 flipped and only damaged the one prop, but pretty severely. It's mate was totally unscathed. It didn't make sense to waste a blade, though amazingly the Mini 3 props are about half the price of Mini 1 or Mini 2 props... about the only deal we get from DJI these days :).

@@GeroLubovnik LOL. My situation was the same. You can see in the video where really only one of my props was damaged. I didn't throw out the other prop, it went in to my "used" collection. My scale is accurate to a tenth of a gram, not quite as good as yours but it may be sufficient. Cheers!

I find the screws rather small/fiddley with my eyesight/glasses and hand size; I wouldn't want to replace propellors in the field. For ease/speed , and to avoid a screw cross thread , I first place a screw in the propellor, hold it there with the screwdriver while lowering the whole assembly (vertically) onto the motor shaft and then tighten.

Defiant small and fidgety lol. I like your method I’ll try that next time but I haven’t had issues because the driver they give you is magnetic so I find the screw fits straight and square with no issues so far. I might have an unfair advantage though; I’m very technical and have dealt with tiny screws with electronics for years. If you think these screws are bad you should try the screws in an iPhone lmao! The screws are practically microscopic and some are 1 or 2 threads longer or shorter than others and some are a micrometer thicker or thinner! So you better not screw it up lol I couldn’t resist the pun!!

It is the right size, it is just really poor quality. Technically though, you are really only touching a set of screws twice and the screwdriver is sufficient for that purpose. In once, out once - screws are not to be reused. The problem arises when your screws come too tight from the factory, then that screwdriver is completely useless. Cheers!

Should we be warned about overtightening a screw? I just had a very hard time unscrewing one. It was screwed by DJI. I eventually resolved to cut the blade away, being very cautious and worried about damaging the craft. The ending was happy. I will try not to overtighten, and will thus have to check the blades before every flight, as you recommend.
@SteveCoutts
@SteveCoutts 10 ай бұрын
The video does mention not to over tighten and it is also why I chose to use the included DJI screwdriver for the propeller replacement. The DJI screwdriver is poor quality but it generally works ok and because of its small size, it makes it difficult to over tighten, something that is much easier to do with a larger screwdriver. Many folks have commented on this video about having difficultly removing a screw or two. It seems to me that most of these problems are coming from the factory, not people over tightening them after replacement. This seemed to be a very common problem with the Mini 3 Pro. Happy to hear you were able to get out your tight screw. I recently had my first stripped screw head, which I was able to remove using a Dremel tool. One viewer just complained about the same issue. Ultimately they used a soldering iron to carefully melt away enough propeller plastic to grip the screw with needle nose pliers. He was able to successfully remove the screw. I have likely swapped more propellers than the average user for all three of my Mini drones. Some due to mishaps but mostly for testing 3rd party propellers or doing how-to videos, both of which require multiple prop swaps. Only once have I come close to not getting a screw out and it was for this most recent video. I had overtightened it on a previous swap. I have always used the included screwdriver for all my Minis, including the one Master Airscrew provides, which is pretty much identical to the DJI one. The supplied screwdriver is definitely not of high quality and it would be easy to assume DJI does it to shave costs. The primary reason for its size is to limit torque and ultimately help prevent overtightened, cross threaded or stripped screws. I had considered recommending a larger, better quality screwdriver in this video but I was worried that too many folks would end up applying excessive torque and causing more problems. Cheers!

Of course right? Always when you're in a hurry. Good that it still flew for you! I have three Mini drones, all with screw on props and all came with the same crappy screwdriver. The only drone I had trouble with was the Mini 3 Pro but thankfully it was only one screw and I was still able to remove it with DJI's screwdriver. I've done multiple swaps since and it's not an issue so perhaps they are just coming from the factory too tight or with too much thread lock. Regardless, I have never seen this much chatter about tight or stripped screws before. One fellow commented that he used a soldering iron to melt away the plastic to get at the screw head. Honestly I really wish DJI would move the Mini line to quick release propellers. I do more than my fair share of propellers swaps due to testing and indoor crashes (b-roll shots mostly) and it's just such a PITA swapping them. Not holding my breath. Happy, safe flying!

Third-party propellers are NOT identical. They may look, feel and be stamped identically but they should not be treated as such. The materials and build quality can be slightly inferior to DJI OEM parts and that *may* cause issues or flight anomalies. There are plenty of manufacturers making "knock-off" DJI propellers. Why do these screws strip so easily? Is there a more robust replacement option for the screw itself, i.e., just something of higher quality?
@SteveCoutts
@SteveCoutts 7 ай бұрын
I feel like it is kind of the nature of small screws though I would also put some blame on the poor quality DJI screwdriver. However, if you're following DJI's recommendations, the screws should only ever be used once and it shouldn't be an issue. On a brand new drone if you break/damage a propeller, you remove the motor pair with the damaged propeller(s), which means throwing out the propellers AND the screws. Those particular screws were only used one time. Your new set of props gets screwed in only one time, ocassionaly checked for tightness and then removed only once when replacement is necessary. Personally, I think the screws (and screwdriver) are robust enough and of sufficient quality for recommended use. It seems though that a numnber of drones, especially the Mini 3 Pro, were coming from the factory with overly tight screws. In an instance like that, the DJI screwdriver will probably mangle the screw head. I haven't heard/read too many complaints about tight screws on the Mini 4 Pro. Other than the screws coming from the factory too tight, I'm not sure why folks are running in to problems unless they are not following DJI's recommendations. Even though I recently bought higer quality screwdrivers, almost all of my screws for all of my mini drones have been replaced using the included DJI screwdriver. The tight screw I had in this video was my first one EVER (knock on wood). I got myself in to trouble because I re-used screws while testing third-party propellers. I finally mangled one that I couldn't remove. As far as your question regarding higher-quality screws, I haven't heard of any such thing but going back to what I said in the beginning, if you're following recommendations it shouldn't be an issue. Cheers!

Do these props have a little bit of wiggle to them? In other words, the screw doesn't seat them firmly against the motor and they have a bit of wiggle on the screws? I am guessing they need to have a little bit of play so they can fold up, but how much would be too much? Makes me feel like I should try tightening the screws, but they are as tight as they are going to go, and I certainly don't want to strip the threads by over tightening.
@SteveCoutts

Yes, they do have a tiny bit wiggle, which is necessary for proper movement. The amount may vary slightly from prop to prop and screw to screw, it won't be a lot though. Generally you want the screws flush to the surface of the propeller and snug but not overnight. If it's requiring too much force, thread an old screw in and out a few times. DJI includes a small screwdriver so you don't over tighten them, which could lead to serious issues. Cheers!

Keep in mind this is only one of many possible methods to remove a stuck screw. It is something I had confidence in and the tools for, so that was my chosen method. Anecdotally, I have heard other folks using pressure grips to crush to top of the propeller against the screw and turning it out. I would be very cautious with that method because you don't want to damage the post where the screw is inserted. I would recommend cutting the propeller off first. Good luck!

A little bit of roughness is not a big deal as we all do a bit of "mowing" now and then - haha! Small chips are also likely not a big deal but I would replace tears immediately. There's something going on here, specifically with the Mini 3 Pro. I own three Minis - the original, the Mini 2 and the Mini 3 Pro. All have screw on propellers. The amount of comments I have seen from folks complaining about tight propellers are the Mini 3 Pro is just nuts! Something is not right. I agree 100% regarding the included screwdriver. It's pretty terrible. On the other hand, I've always used it to remove the props, including the Mini 3 Pro and it's always worked for me. When making this video I removed all the props with the included screwdriver and only one screw gave me trouble but I was able to get it out. Others have not been so lucky. There have been comments where folks have chipped away at the plastic with a knife or Dremel and then used pliers to remove the rouge screw. One fellow said he melted away the plastic with a soldering iron - I would not recommend that option. I hope you get it resolved and I also hope DJI gets rid of the screw on props in the next iteration of the Mini. I honestly can't stand them. Cheers!

To be honest I've only stripped one screw head with the DJI screwdriver and that was a couple of months ago and largely due to me re-using screws while swapping propellers for testing. So really my own fault. I've pretty much used the included screwdrivers exclusively since getting the original Mini. Admittedly, it's of poor quality but as long as you don't have a tight screw, which tends to occur more often right from the factory, it should do the job just fine as long as you're not re-using or over tightening screws. I first started hearing complaints about the tight screw issue with the Mini 3 Pro. I really wasn't hearing about it with the previous Mini drones. If it's your first time replacing the propellers then that is likely the problem. My first time doing a propeller change was while making this video. One of the screws was pretty tight but I still managed to get it out without too much trouble with the DJI screwdriver. Oh boy! My first thought is that perhaps there is too much thread-lock in the screw hole. Maybe you could try using one of those plastic toothpick things to try and remove some of it and make sure the hole is clear. I think typically the DJI props come with an extra screw. You could sacrifice one screw, clean off the thread-lock and screw it in and out to see if you can remove any excess. Just don't apply too much force. The screws are very small and it's easy to strip or cross-thread them. Alternatively, you could contact DJI Support to see if they can help. The one that came with the drone is really small and when I replaced the props a while ago, I found a lot of resistance when trying to put the new screws in, even used one of the old ones, like you mentioned, but when I start the motors, I always get a visual warning, of sorts, from the rc controller telling me to check the props. I can clear it and restart and they start fine but when I replaced the props, I found a lot of resistance using the tiny driver that came with the drone and I'm wondering if maybe I did something wrong? It seems to fly okay but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for that's telling me if it's wrong.. Thanks in advance!

Admittedly, the included DJI screwdriver is not great but for me personally, it has always seemed to get the job done. I made this video during my first ever prop change for the Mini 3 Pro. I only had one screw that was really difficult to get out and a bit tricky to get back in, which was a first for me. Even after threading an old screw in and out a few times, it still required more force than I am usually wanting to give. Still though, the crappy DJI screwdriver got it done. I believe DJI includes a small screwdriver not to be cheap but to make sure folks don't over tighten screws, which could potentially be a bigger issue. I have never had to use a different screwdriver to replace any of the propellers on any of my Minis but if I did, this is one I would recommend -amzn.to/3E4dx3E. It is a good, inexpensive choice and I use it for things like glasses, etc. It provides better grip, a bit more torque and higher-quality bits. Incidentally, I have heard more issues of tight prop screws on the Mini 3 Pro than the other Minis combined. Must be something going on there. The propeller warning is something new. It looks like it is able to detect when a propeller swap has occurred and you get that warning until you clear it. I have got the same message every time I swapped propellers on the Mini 3 Pro and I have done it frequently, especially now while testing third-party props. If the screws are tight, flush as possible without over tightening, the propellers move freely and the drone flies as expected, you likely have nothing to worry about. If there was something majorly wrong with the installation, you would definitely notice as soon as you spun up the motors. Happy, safe flying! Cheers!

Anecdotally I've heard of more "tight screw" issues with the Mini 3 Pro than the first two Mini's combined, which is interesting. Sorry to hear that. Interestingly, I have had more complaints in the comments of tight screws on the Mini 3 Pro than the Mini 1 and Mini 2 combined. Something going on there. I had one viewer comment that he used a soldering iron to carefully melt away enough plastic to be able to grip the top of the screw with needle nose pliers, which allowed him to turn it loose and remove it. My caution with that approach, if you're going to try it, is the heat from the soldering iron will transfer through any metal part and could ultimately do damage so you want to be careful to avoid contact with anything other than the plastic. The prop rests on a metal post so you would need to be VERY careful. The only other thing I could think of is using some kind of clipper or cutting tool to chip away enough of the plastic to be able to access the top of the screw with pliers. You could also ask the question in the DJI Forum (forum.dji.com) in case someone else has a clever trick you could try. Good luck! Let me know how it works out.
