Just got my pocket 3 last week. I have the same thoughts. I’ll use Dlog M for studio recording where I can control the lighting. But for outdoor shots so far I plan to use auto to avoid having to worry about backlighting situations. I might use DLog outside for a more planned shoot, but for vlog style videos Auto seems the way to go for now. Hopefully DJI can fix this in a firmware update.

Uggg...Casey from camera conspiracies has the pocket 3 for 1 day and discovers more than I do in a month! Actually I think he discovered this using D-Log M in a previous camera like the action three or four, so I don't think it's a firmware update thing. Honestly, I agree. Now the only question is: do you even need the ND's?

Great video.. Finally someone is not trying to sell his color grading luts or nd filters to his audience! I own many pro level proper cameras. I love nd filters etc for cinematic looks..but... This is a vlog camera. Vlog means your face is the most important thing and all cinematographers knows that your first priority should be to expose for you main subject! This device definitely does not expose for your face in dlog. It tries to expose for everything in the scene and in high dynamic range situations you will be underexposed. You will try to fix it in post but since the lighting is not controlled.. you are supposed to be moving around.. You can't fix the whole video with a single click. However, surprisingly.. in the normal color mode(which is now also 10bit) it always exposes for your face and also has arguably more dynamic range too. Because probably the device is computing like iphone is doing and recovering shadow and highlight detail while already keeping your face exposed. I watched over 100 reviews and not a single one told about this man. You are the hero. Maybe you can use the dlog for broll(good luck to judge your exposure on that screen anyways).. I really don't understand people.. This is supposed to be a point and shoot vlog camera. Everybody is trying to make it look like a pro camera.. But it will not.. For vlog my choice is normal color with reduced sharpening.. a mist filter may also help get rid of the digital look.. But you will have an exposed face :) And for broll I still think HLG is superior. Again nobody is talking about HLG probably most don't know how to color grade it for SDR but it is much easier with greater details and color. Anyway.. that's another story.. Great channel.. keep up the good work mate

Yeah, I think the Pocket's primary focus is definitely for vlogging, but it makes sense that others want to squeeze out every possible feature. I like your suggestion on the mist filter, I just wish my freewell mist wasn't as effective. But should try it again. I'm in the camp that is a novice at color-grading, so I've naturally stayed away from HLG. I do like tweaking the Pocket LUT a bit, but still need to learn more.

@@TravelingAhn I see freewell has 1/8 snow mist and glow filters on their website. Again nobody is talking about them because the 14pack which they received as a frebie from Freewell does not have these 2 filters. If you don't like strong 1/4 mist, you can give it a try. I will do so i guess :)

If one wants perfect motion blur.. you can always add a light nd filter but keep it in normal color mode like that. It will help..not the proper 180 degree maybe but will definetely help.. It's not the nd filter here.. the normal color mode is helping a lot and easing your life.. I now decided to create my own lut for normal mode. Just for color correction and nothing else. So i will get rec709 colors and properly exposed face everytime and than I can add whatever rec709 lut I want on top of that :) And no.. I'm not gonna sell my lut.. anyone can create one with the help of a colorchecker tool too.

@@TravelingAhn colorchecker basically a chart to film and you can than at color grading match the colors on the chart to the proper values on your footage. If you do it once you can save the it as a preset or lut and reuse again. Just google "colorchecker video". I have the passport version which is a pocket size thing but seriously the most vital tool if you want to play with colors . You can't trust your eyes/monitor but trust that tool.

@@TravelingAhn Yes, like a pantone reference chart. It also has proper exposure tools and wb and focus tools. You simply first correct your wb with the card. Than match the 6 main color chips to the vectorscope on your video editing software. So you have a proper %100 true colors.(not shifted by Dji or Canon or Sony etc.) No 3rd party color science will be left.. So you can match your iphone color to your canon or dji etc.. When you get the correct base rec709 colors.. than the luts made for rec709 will work on your footages perfectly

I agree with your thinking Ahn. As tech/photography nerds we love to (think we) have full control over settings and shoot fully manual and log but with the sophisticated tech these days I'm leaning more towards letting the tech do its thing. The pros can go full manual and colour grade things to an inch of their lives, I'm going to focus more on the story telling than the settings. Even in auto, with 10 bit profile there should still be plenty of scope to stamp your style on the end result in post.

The auto mode works exceptionally well. It does have a prime lens with auto facial recognition with the ability to auto focus on everything in frame. Its better than the latest flagship smartphones (iPhone/Samsung). It records significantly cleaner 4k night video compared with the Pocket 2. Goes to show the massive sensor size (1 inch) really comes into play to help us create content to share. The only issue that developed for me is when I try to rotate the camera up or down using the toggle stick, it zooms instead. Will try to resolve this via connecting to the mimo app.

Oh, that's an easy fix! Just tap the right side of the middle right of the screen. If there are little arrows pointing up and down you can move the joystick to control the direction of the Gimbal. If you tap that it will turn into a number (1.0) and then you are able to zoom up from 1.0 to 2.0. If you tap it again it will reveal the arrows again and then you are back to the ability to control the gimbal direction. Hope that helps!

Yes, I can help! When you press the record button and see the Green Light. Let go and then press it again (long press)...it will then flash slowly blue. At that point, you need to press the connecting button on the other side so it will flash quickly blue. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the extensive testing! Watched your other videos and gotta say you got alot of confidence walking in circles in public in order to give us consistent real world comparisons. For me the ND32 DLog is the look I prefer as it's more realistic and the colours are not washed out while also retaining the 180 shutter angle. It all depends on your goal I guess, either be in a place where your face is lit or sacrifice background exposure, just one of the challenges of video.

Hello Steve, yeah...so when you put the camera setting in "Non-Pro" mode it doesn't even allow you to choose between "D-Log M" or "Normal Color Profile." So I'm assuming it's using some form of normal color profile with a dab of computational smartphone like adjustments. I've heard different takes on whether that is 8bit or 10bit. I know when you go into "Pro" settings, it does show 10bit next to the "Normal Color Profile" Good question, hope that helps a little!

Thank you for this video. I like Auto Mode. If objects are constantly changing then you don't have time to experiment with settings in real time. I have Pocket 2 and its 8-bit dynamic range and small sensor (and maybe something else too) washes out my outdoor videos where I have contrast scenes with both dark objects (dark color or in a shadow) and bright sun around. I hope pocket 3 is better when you film such scenes. Based on this video it seems it may be better indeed...

I(m agree Adam, I think that these 2 DJI cameras Pocket 3 and Action 4 are so good that after my own tests (I will probably do a small video on that) I will use the auto mode, and just put a ND filter on this auto mode when the sun will be there (I bought the Freewell 4 ND Filters "Bright Day" Pack, with the polarised ones) and that's it. :)

Everytime I see the pocket 3 footage, im still blown away. Looks good and I def see the exposure issue on face with ND on! I am not mad that it does a better job in auto as that makes life easier but I also wonder if you locked shutter what that would it do with an ND filter on. Hey HillPhantom, thanks for chiming in! Any time I use the ND filter I will always lock my shutter to the frame rate. I'm lazy, but hooking up the DJI Mimo App does help with getting Zebras and a histogram live on the smartphone or tablet device. Maybe that would help too.

@@TravelingAhn You nailed it. Auto has more "tools" to use to expose the image, being iso and shutter. I'm no expert but my assumption is that when you add an ND filter, and lock the shutter, it can only then use iso, which if locked or capped, the camera is hindered as compared to auto?? But it's interesting bc the camera does know a filter is on, as it wont close. Above our paygrade to know but be an interesting question for DJI.

The pocket 3 is doing computational video in normal colour (just like phones these days) The pro is that will always have amazing dynamic range but the con would be that it will look like an iPhone (bit fake) footage. Noticed putting it on -0.7 or even -1 actually makes it look a bit better and more realistic. (That's when it comes to normal mode) When in log, as most logs, you should definitely not underexpose. If anything - it should work well if overexposed with +0.7 or +1 and then bring down the highlights in post. Log formats normally have a lot of information in the highlights, so you can work with it. I think P3 acts same as P2.(i tested that) Try it yourself: Fix the exposure manually on one scene. Like shutter 50 and iso 100 locked. And then just swap log to normal or vise versa. It should show a difference of nearly 2 stops. So if log shows 0 in a certain scene, normal will show like -1.7 If normal shows 0, then log will show 1.7 overexposed in the same scene.

Had a lot of testing with the P2 in order to make it look good, back in the day. I assume the P3 will act very similar. Also I hope they included in the exposure settings when in auto, the shutter range like in the action 3 and 4. On those you just tap on the top left corner and then you can manually set the shutter to fluctuate between 200 and 8000 for example. If they included that in the P3 and you could set a minimum shutter 50 when shooting in 25fps, will help a lot in changing lighting environments. Haven't seen anyone trying/testing it so far. Maybe an idea for a future video? 😃 Enjoy your holiday !

Hello Mike, yeah I am quite aware of the Action 3 and 4 allowing you to set a range on the shutter. I do that all the time for the Action 4. However, the Pocket 3 does not allow you to do such a thing. You can either lock in the shutter or have the Pocket 3 decide, but no range setting on it. Great thought though!

Yeah, I totally forgot to set it to EV-0.7 when I was in the auto modes. The Pocket does tend to blow out the image for sure! That's why I appreciate having the ND's as well, even using them on the normal color profile and auto modes.

I did set Auto WB for this "vlogging" situation because I knew I was going in and out of shadows so it didn't make sense to lock in my WB for this particular situation. For the complete "AUTO" mode...Yes you do give up your ability to control WB. For the Normal Color Profile set in Pro Mode, you can lock in your WB. The only thing you can control in complete "AUTO" mode is the sharpness and noise reduction. Thanks for always supporting the channel!

Do you not have to 'bring out the colours' with D Log M footages? You will not get to see it's true potential straight out of the camera. It requires editing after the fact. But i must say, i have shot in normal colour profile and have had great looking footages. I use D Log M or HLG for when shooting at night though. I feel it really does help in low light situations.

Yeah, for sure! I do find that you need to bump up the saturation in D-Log and love being able to have the flexibility of manipulating the footage. And like you said, nighttime is better for D-Log. Why does no one ever talk about HLG on this camera? I did some test shots yesterday and HLG had BETTER dynamic range than D-Log M while still having decent colors. Using HLG doesn't mean you're forced to edit/export in HDR so why does everyone seem so afraid to even touch the setting?

Hello Albert, you are correct. HLG is something I've stayed away from because it seems a bit more difficult to color-grade and I'm still a novice at that. Are you using the DJI LUT and then color-grading? Or are you just color-grading it without a LUT? Thanks for the feedback!

@@TravelingAhn I started using the Leeming LUT for the Pocket 3 since it gives a much more accurate starting point than the DJI LUT. As for grading HLG in general, it's actually easier to grade than D-Log M since the colors aren't nearly as flat. "Hybrid LOG Gamma" is a pretty accurate name since it behaves just like a hybrid between your standard color profiles and LOG.

@@TravelingAhn True, so do I! But the Pocket 3 seems to get 'some' Bokeh, somehow, sometimes. As I mentioned before, I would still take the a7C to Tokyo if I ever get there. And I also don't want to use an expensive camera just as a door stop or paper weight someday!

It is a well understood practice to NOT point your lens directly into the Sun when trying to shoot a subject. It is standard good practice when shooting outdoors to always have the Sun over your shoulder (Behind you) with your camera pointed 180 degrees away from the Direct light source (The Sun) in the sky while shooting your subject from that position.. New Feature Requests for the New DJI OSMO Pocket 3 1. Add a dwelling time for each of up to four settable movement positions in Motion Time-Lapse Mode. As each of the four settable positions programmed into a motion time-lapse sequence is reached, the end user could set from 1 to 10 seconds of a pause in gimbal movement as each programmed position is reached during the sequence before the gimbal moves forward to the next programmed position. This would yield a much more dynamic and professional looking, smoother motion time-lapse sequence. 2. In Motion Time-Lapse Mode the ability to set movement ease in and ease out settings from 0.5 to 3 seconds for each programmable gimbal position before gimbal movement normal progression rate is reached. 3. True 24.00p filming speed. 4. The ability to set time-lapse sequences based on 24.00p. 5. The ability to be able to record from the DJI Mic 2 and from a plugged in via USB audio source at the same time. 6. Adding a 10 Bit 4:2:2 recordable video codec. 7. Please add zoom capability when shooting in all time-lapse modes.

Yeah, your best practice is very good advice! But when people are running and gunning shooting a vlog, that’s not always feasible 😂 I like your suggestions on what DJI could do to improve for future firmware! Very well thought out and thank you for sharing!

I'm in a PAL 50hz nation, so that's why I'm filming in 50 FPS. Hope that explains things. It would be the equivalent of 60 FPS in a NTSC nation.

To be fair, the Normal Color mode looks better only because of the auto-exposure on the face. What doesn’t look good is the Normal colour when your face has the sun right on it OR when you use the DJI LUT with DLOG. Both are too flat and make skin look terrible in the sun. Properly exposing when in direct sun, and grading DLOG without the DJI LUT is the best look for me.

That's great insight! I have noticed when color-grading after applying the DJI Lut, I almost always have to increase saturation and tweak a few things. I still consider myself a novice on color-grading and working with the scopes. But thankfully the 10 bit color does give us the ability to manipulate it better. Definitely appreciate your thoughts on this!
