DJI Spark - To Buy or Not To Buy?

Hey Guys, One last, last, last, last thing I forgot to mention: Battery Life. According to DJI, Max Flight Time = 16 minutes (no wind at a consistent 12.4 mph (20 kph)) Things you have to factor in when flying in the real world: - Amount of Wind (Resistance) - Speed of your drone/Sports mode ON or OFF - If you are taking videos/photos (I'm assuming 16minutes is pure flying, no video/photo taking) The more your motors have to work, for speed/mid-air stability/maneuvers, the less battery life you're going to have to play with your drone; I reckon with video recording you'll REALISTICALLY end up getting 8-12 minutes flight time (12min being generous). Anyway, hope this helps - lemme know if you guys have any other questions!

Is the range approximately the same as the mavic without modifications. a Approx 400 ft up and 1500 ft distance..?

24 Mbps at 1080p is quite fine by my book. when compared to Mavics 4k is only 60Mbps , its astounding that they managed to get spark to do that. Take for example a M43 sensor on average for 4k does 100 Mbps or more so the spark is still leading for its own small sensor size. Im glad im getting one.

Thanks for the video! I'm seriously torn right now. I currently own a mavic pro, but the hands free features of the spark are calling to me. I'm debating about selling the mavic to get a spark, I only really film in 1080p so i would hope the image quality wouldn't be too much different.

Isn't the flight time better on this drone compared to the other small drones?

Yep! Significantly. Dobby is around 9mins, and other are within the 10-12min mark. 16minutes is okay, but once you factor in wind resistance (which there always will be) speed of your drone, you're gna end up with about 10-12minutes to play with the Spark anyways.

Yes but I can charge the second battery that came with my Breeze in the external charger while flying with one in the bird. Cant do that with the Spark until you buy the extra battery $49 and the external charger $69 neither of which will be out till next month. So for only $110 more you can have the battery capability that the Breeze had a year ago. Good job DJI, this thing should cost $299

It's not a small drone, but it will do well in the wind and it's a DJI product, the phantom 3 can be had for cheaper than the spark

Spark is a bit difficult to carry around, I went to the DJI store at causeway bay once and the box is a little bit oversize for bags. But It is quite light, that's really attractive. However, as you tried using phone control on mavic, you can notice that it flies incredibly slow and short range. I assume that'll be the same for the spark. So controller is pretty important if people want to have the full experience of droning. "ByeBye" Gesture mode isn't that reliable since it does not have sensor on the back, using in a forest like DJI advert may just crash your drone in a few seconds lol. Comparing with the dobby and xiro explorer mini, this is awesome. People always complain about 16 mins flight time, come on! Explorer mini has 10 mins actual flight time and dobby has 9 mins. Buy it Warren, DO IT

Yeah I think some people might be put off that it doesn't fold like that mavic. Yes, not a big fan of phone fly at all, would rather they package all their drones with a remote if i'm being honest, but I get that the want to suck their consumers dry of their money. and one more yes, haha, definitely one of the top drones in it's league if you're into that stuff.

It is very refreshing, you take the time to answer a lot of peoples comments. I feel you care a great deal about your audience. It's one drone which I would consider, you have given some more inspiring honesty answers. I do wish they could of just pumped up to 1080p60 at with a drone the live feeling footage looks very nice. We shall wait for iFixit to take one apart so can discover what SoC they using. And of course I've given a thumbs up, you forgot to mention this! :-)

Well I went for the Mavic been 4K and all that... had to return 2 units because of the infamous right side blurry image. Ended up cancelling my order. I am really disappointed at Dji for not issuing a formal recall. Looking at the Spark again because of summer holidays.

According to DJI, there is only one extra battery come with the fly more combo, not 2 extra.

Yes, my bad - the 'Fly More' combo only comes with 1xExtra battery (a total of 2 including the one already in the spark) Got a tad confused cos the Mavic 'Fly More' combo comes with 2xExtra batteries.. I guess they should've called this one the 'fly a little bit more' combo

Hi that was a great video and first time we actually saw the RC of Spark!. I am hugely confused between Mavic and Spark. Budget is not a problem. I am not a Vlogger, Pro or KZbinr. The drone will be only for fun, family , travel videos. I am a total noob, never used drone before nor do i used Softwares to edit videos. In both the cases I will be buying fly more combo. I am more interested in taking pics than photos. What I love about most for spark is its starts up v quickly. More like pop n play. Don't know about mavic. In my country i am getting mavic combo for discount and spark combo at premium. In a way i am more inclined towards Mavic due to overall appeal, but i am scared if Mavic is complicated to use and requires too much effort i may not even use it ever. And on the other hand spark is very pop n play. I really dont care about 4k if the 1080p video quality and still images quality is same of both then my draw gets closer to spark. But when i am seeing videos and sample footages of both of them, they dont appear to be same. Hence confusion doubles up. PLEASE HELP

You kinda answered it yourself. You're getting the Mavic. If you're getting the Mavic at a discount versus the Spark at a premium then the price difference will be even smaller so go for the one with better overall specifications since 'budget is not a problem'. You're getting the fly more combo either way but with the Mavic you get 2 extra batteries aside from everything else whereas you're only getting 1 extra battery for the Spark. Don't even worry about learning how to use it because if you're reading the manual or watching youtube tutorial videos I'm sure you'll be able to pick it up quickly enough.

Why is it that most reviews I've watched never once mention that Spark's photo format is only JPEG. It's not as expensive as the Mavic but that was the deal breaker for me enough to return it. I think it's sleezy marketing to say it shares the same camera as the Mavic but yet a simple dng raw format could not be integrated into this. It's still $500 actually $699 for my bundle but still not cheap. Even Amazon do not put this specs on their website.

I've actually mentioned JPEG only at 37secsonds in: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIfUoYukas6Soa8 I did also mention it shares the same sensor size and MP count (which is true) but it could be a complete different sensor altogether Also agree that it's quite overpriced for what it is (and offers, which isn't a whole lot) imho, would have thought they'd price it a little better since they pretty much have the upper hand on the small-drone market anyway in terms of a (relatively) reliable drone. I would personally just get the mavic or the normal Phantom 4 - which has gone down in price significantly since the release of the P4P.

The spark seems cool but a bit gimmicky. I think with the mavic being so relatively close in price it makes the spark feel like a very temporary investment.

Nobody ever seems to cover the exact height & distance range in their reviews with the Spark. Very strange, seems like it must only go a 100 metres either way and no one wants to mention it's very poor range. I don't know? 🙄

Actually I already mentioned that at 3m16s - With the remote you get 2km signal range, and with Phone only you get 100metres, which is shockingly poor range imho (but then again.. it is just a phone, not a remote). Hence my repeated suggestion to buy/use the remote, extremely worth while.
