Helsinki-based DJ Yotto showcases a mix in the DJsounds studio laying down his trademark melodic progressive house with touches of trance and more ambient melodies. Signed to Above & Beyond's label Anjunadeep, Yotto treats us to a set teased with album tracks from his debut 'Hyperfall' as well as his own remix of the BBE trance classic.

as an EDM fan for almost a decade I'm still not clear what he's doing will 4 discs & all those knobs. I realize that he needs to ensure the BPM matches when switching tracks. But for the remaining times how is it different from playing the entire track from a single player? Care to select a 5 min interval & walk through what he's doing during that time?

Raghunath Ramachandra Raghunath Ramachandra hope your doing good buddy, I’ll explain your question the best I can mate! Not to sound condescending here but Carl Cox once said that EDM is the entry level into dance music. If you think about the origins of dance music you can date it back to the 70s mate. Disco, techno, acid etc. If you choose to take a look at how those guys mixed music you should be able to see how yotto is using the decks to create a real flow throughout his set, the energy remains throughout the entirety of the hour because he’s constantly got the songs layered. This is a common technique for mixing these types of records.

@@drraghunath83 For an example watch at around 8.20 ish, watch the turntable to the far right (call it number 4). he's cue'd up & looping two bars there while his main output is coming from the 3rd turntable. Both faders are open. Gets to his transition then switches them over and eventually table 3 gets faded down and mised with the looped 2nd deck. The sound from the 3 tables at around 14 mins is pretty cool. Ultimately he's just generating sounds on the fly like the old sound system guys would have back in the day.

@@samu3l_music thanks for taking time to answer my question. By energy do you mean BPM? Yes I do agree that energy levels are consistent throughout, which will be a challenge to maintain through the entire set

Great music as always. Genuine question though, why does Yotto keep on touching the mid and the treble EQ but only adjust it for a tiny amount. Is it a question of habit? Or does it really make a difference to the mix? I reckon it's just to seem like he's doing something whilst the song progresses a bit, but am not sure. Thoughts?
@PinchHarmonic69

Probably keeps him in flow with the track and also to look like he's doing something if he doesn't feel like dancing or standing still in front of everybody.

You need to take the sound down in increments otherwise it sounds too obvious and jarring. For smooth transitions this is how it's done - take it down a little, let people get used to it, down a little more, etc.

@PinchHarmonic69

They have up to 4 tracks going at once (usually only 2 or 3). They can mix in certain portions of these tracks, and also EQ using high med or low. This is to create a seamless journey between the tracks. The best DJs know how to create an atmosphere over the course of a set, and also to tailor it in real time to the type of crowd they have (festival, dark club, etc).
@metaling1
@metaling1 5 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of unnecessary knob touching. It’s not as complicated as it seems... look at the knob position before and after it is touched... a lot of times there is no change in its position. First time watching this guy mix and his EQing seems very chaotic. But yes, it is just EQ of portions of each track....

@SkateFallen1424
@SkateFallen1424 5 жыл бұрын
@@metaling1 that's not usually true. a little bit goes a long way when it comes to EQ knobs, and with progressive house and techno, trance etc especially, you're making tiny adjustments over an extended period, so each time you touch it you're just moving it a tiny amount. that's what you're probably seeing here
@timl5349
@timl5349 5 жыл бұрын
No, it’s not what I’m seeing. I am categorically and repeatedly seeing him touch knobs and there is no position change after touching them. It has nothing to do with what genre is being played. I am just stating that the whole thing looks A LOT more complicated than what it really is. I also notice a lot of knob touching but when it comes to the mix, the knob movements are relatively large... I don’t get it. Not knocking him, I am just stating a fact.
