Im an intermodal trucker. There is 2 railroad acronym You need to know. trailer on flatcar TOFC An actual 27 to 53 ft trailer mounted on a flat car. UPS does this ALLOT. And Container on flatcar. COFC Double stack is king. 53ft containers are called Domestics. Basically any where in North America and P.R. Imports are every thing else. CSX cincinnati has 2 tracks at 2000 ft with 4 cranes that can go from truck to train to storage at 3 high and 3 wide. And the crane can take a box over the top of 3 high. At the entrance exit you'll need a gate. And somewhere inside the yard you'll need a shop for repairs. In close proximity to the intermodal yard there are Depots. They are yards the steamship lines store/repair Boxes and chassis. And most are a trucker as well. Of the 3 rails i haul out of there are 6 different peices of equipment that load/move the boxes. This is the crasiest freight ive ever hauled. I love it.

Great look at an intermodal yard. This is something that I can’t use on my layout because of the time frame that I’m modeling. Which is the late 1930’s to the mid 1940’s. But again I enjoyed the video. Keep up the great videos and helping us model realistic layouts.

Great video as always DJ ! I have an overhead crane for when I get to model a container/intermodal yard.(german proto). A lot of the track arrangements I have seen use the 3 track arrangement,my plan also. The old Pitcairn yard was massive,4 TT's and many subyards. To model this would need a building on it's own !

My job sometimes calls for me moving our private containers. I do it with a Doosan front end loader with a folk attachment. Lifts and moves them like that are made of cotton. These machines like the one he is using can easily flip a train car.

You never disappoint me. You have opened my eyes to the beauty and complexity of railroads. I continue to learn from you. By the way, I bring home only 47% of every dollar earned. Still, I love the hobby and because I don’t smoke or drink I do have some spare change to budget toward the hobby. I am now saving toward a signaling system however there do not appear to be any realistic ones that don’t require me to be an electrical engineer. I like Atlas but I hate those type G signals. They have modern ones in HO. They are not keeping up with their commitment to fulfill the BLMA promise of modern N scale signals. Where is Craig Martyn when you need him?

Some of the cargo in the containers just blows my mind. I work at a logistics company, and we get containers loaded from nose to end with 2200lb pallets of sea salt double stacked. That's 44,000lbs just for a 20ft container. LOL, I have to split the stacks while unloading cause my lift can't handle two pallets of salt at a time and the lift in the video is grabbing 40 and 48 ft containers like it's nothing.

Good Day DJ. Great Job with the video on the Pitcairn Intermodal Facility. Question for you. Do you have an idea of when Trailer Train started to phase out the 89' Flat Cars from Intermodal service in favor of the spine cars? I'm in the process of building an HO Scale Intermodal Facility and from all the videos I've seen on KZbin, it's basically spine cars and well cars for primary use. Although I have seen FEC Long Runners here and there. Thank you.

I don't know exactly, but I would say they were phased out between 2005 and 2010. Coincided with the phasing out of 45' and 48' trailers and the explosion of 53' domestic containers. I think the long-runners outlasted the individual flat cars.

Lol cause those are my favorite two railcars. i like seeing CSX and NS with there rock loads go by along with there intermodel loads as well so I just happened to get curious from that.
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 2 жыл бұрын
If you're asking about loaded cars, the rock hopper is much heavier. 40ft containers are limited to about 25 tons of cargo, so a double-stack isn't going to be carrying much more than 65 tons, assuming that 53ft containers can carry a little more. Rock hoppers, on the other hand, are going to be carrying about 100 tons each.

hello DJ , I have a ? for you I can't fine a answer.. Intermodal yards how many are their, when you see stack trains with DPU in the middle/ end do they stop and drop they off to different yards, and be safe engineer.. and how is your lay out, I have a n scale I love doing drope off different industries, ty Dale
@djstrains
@djstrains 10 ай бұрын
I'm struggling with understanding this. How many intermodal yards are there? I don't know. Do they drop off DPU units? Not normally. We have so many restrictions on where the DPU can be in a train, so it may change position in a train based upon tons, and length. Layout videos coming soon.

So there's only two people operating this facility? Just one fork lift / crane operator and one yard tractor hostler?
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 2 жыл бұрын
I think DJ was there at a very quiet time. At 5:50 you can see what looks like a line of 12-15 yard tractors parked by the left-hand track. I don't think just one tractor could even come close to supplying the crane with enough containers during loading, or remove enough trailers during unloading to keep things moving efficiently.
