I'd also say the K-Pop industry is very similar to how American sports, particularly football/basketball, industry works. Particularly the scouting when they're young/in high school, signing them to a team (or in K-Pops case, a record label like YG/SM/Hybe), and then training them to maybe be on the starting line (debut). Players sometimes get injured, have controversies/scandals, dating scandals similar to K-Pop industry and they have to try to not let it impact their main duties or their fans start hating and become very toxic (which they already do towards other players/teams anyway lol). It's surprisingly similar.

To be honest, if kpop fans were healthier the kpop industry wouldn't make as much money. I'm not saying that it's okay to do so, but the truth is that a large part of the money that this industry generates is precisely for making fans think that they have a "relationship" with their idol, that he loves them more than anyone in the world and to get them to buy hundreds of albums to "take care" of their idol and thank him for the love he give to them. If you could get the fandoms to be really healthy the kpop industry would stop working as it does now, it wouldn't make that much money and there wouldn't be so many groups debuting every year

Your comment literally made me breath. You said out loud what I was thinking. I also think kpop industry is just taking advantage of the people who are in urge of not feeling lonely, etc. They are just selling the perfect image/visual and the good side of their artists so that they can become a role model, or a dating model. And so these fans are just feeling the urge of feeling closer and closer to these partially real images. I am not saying that idols are fake. I am just pinpointing what the industry is going for and how these fans are just eating it without thinking of how hard this way of living might be... They cry and say inhuman things when someone is dating, smoking, take a "too normal"/human picture of themselves, talk about their point of view, etc... Of course I am NOT saying that ALL the fans are like this. I'm just loving those artists out there but my heart just hurts when I think about "how it's working".

Totally agree. I always say this at the beginning stages of the idol entertainment industry they should have normalize alot of things for the future Kpop idols, because fans would just see it has the norm for idols to date, drinking, clubbing, doing hobbies and traveling and would just support their idol music and not put social pressures on them for being a perfect human being.

But that the compromise you have to accept, in any case for what I have seen it's a rule valid in their twenties when they are at the peak of their activities. Considering their schedule, the scrutiny of the public 24/7, the public image, the tours and other endorsements etc. how on earth can you keep up a stable and meaningful relationship? It's a luxury when they have good friendships, and if that happen within the group they belong, they should make the best out of it. Or when they are involved in extra activities such as being the MC in music programs they can meet new people, colleagues, interact and expand the circle of friends. Past 30, after military service, they can move on with their personal life and start dating in public etc. because the target audience have aged as well and have become more reasonable and understanding.

Sadly a lot of fans are mostly into idols for their looks etc. and not primarily for the music. If you see all the ppl on TV, KZbin etc. getting asked who their favorite member is and why, a lot of the time they'll say because they're good looking. Also Kpop is very performance oriented and often not really focused on the music. A lot of idol albums will have a catchy title song and otherwise lots of "fillers".

I just wanted to talk about this to get it off my chest.. The lyrics of 'My Time' do talk about losing out on time and Jungkook's probably talking about how he couldn't do things a lot of people his age could do. Understandable. But thinking about it, that's true for any successful person (unless money/position has been handed to them on a golden platter). If you set your mind on achieving your dreams you *will* lose out on other things. You can't do everything. Doctors, athletes, engineers, CEOs, teachers, soldiers etc. all lose other parts of their lives to become who they are. And that's why I don't think 'My Time' is only about idols or celebrities, but it is relatable to any person who spent their youth chasing their dreams and then looks back at the past. I don't think Jungkook means that he's regretting his decision, but rather he's thinking about the things he may have done if he wasn't an idol and realising how fast time flies.

Wow! This is exactly what i was thinking when they mentioned the song. I couldn't agree more. I had to make up a system; when I cook, I talk to my mom. @@Vor567tez I'd say it's close to similar with Yandere. The other term for the crazy fans is Sasaeng, doesn't have a literal translation. But I believe there was an example of it in 2018 with BTS' Jimin. A fan sent him a bloody knife and threatened his life if he didn't admit to loving her. Another obvious example would be the monstrousity that is Oli London. He whole heartedly believes if he worships Jimin (again poor man) that Jimin will notice him, fall in love and marry him. You take that and times it by thousands; there's the my oppa mindset. They have literal cults worshipping idols, they stalk, harrass,hurt and destroy just about anything and anyone near the idol because something is telling them 'that idol is mine. Mine and mine alone. If I can't have them, No body will.' they literally become so enamoured by the idol and the fanservice they believe it's directed at them specifically. Idols tread a literal line of 'if I love another; they'll be harmed.' these fans will legitimately sell EVERYTHING they have, organs included to get near the artists. It's honestly terrifying to see; I had a friend who was basically my oppa personified; she scared me to the point i became a passenger because I was genuinely afriad if I didn't she'd hurt me for refusing. I think it'd be interesting to see the circumstances that lead to them becoming so attached to a star, their context and stuff if that makes sense? Note: the hangul for it is My oppa- 내 오빠 (I believe) Sasaeng- 사생팽 (again I think) Note of note: I've only really taken to learning hangul fully last year so I'm sorry if the characters aren't correct and stuff :')

When I watched the BTS BE comeback special, each member got a role to handle for one comedic segment of the special. J Hope was assigned to do the 'Mental Care' and he went around checking on everyone individually. He was patting the other guys on their arms, chests, and etc saying 'Mental care, mental care. ' But even though it was funny, it gave a good idea of the fact that idols do need to have their mental health or mental care provided for, too. I think those companies that treat their idols with respect and love are taking care of their idols' mental health. Take MINGI from ATEEZ for example. He took around 9 months hiatus to manage his anxiety. His management company definitely did provide for his mental and emotional well being. And he came back strong, happy, and healthy! They're selling not just music, but a 'relationship' with the idol, the perfect bf/gf fantasy, the illusion of their availability and the idea of them being your friend and caring about you. Fans' deep emotional investment and dedication is what companies are aiming for bc it's immensely profitable. I'm not an expert and not even Korean, but I think - as many people have stated here as well - labels in fact do sell fantasies. Everything from looks to behaviour and dating life is usually quite non-human - just happy, perfect and extremelly beautiful characters singing, dancing and talking. I started to listen to K-pop as an adult few years ago, and idols instantly reminded me of those characters I found in books or I just imagined as a kid/teenager. Labels kind of turn those fantasies everyone has into reality. As I said I'm an adult, almost in my thirties, and I obviously don't feel it the same way I would have when I was younger. I still enjoy music and the acts. Anyway, I think that "fantasy business" is one major reason K-pop is so popular - and on the other hand, groups with little more realistic and humane appearance - like BTS - are popular abroad. But it's really interesting!
@ViewSub
@ViewSub 2 жыл бұрын
And to add to the previous: even their flaws are acceptable and part of the fantasy. Depression and low self-esteem do good for the brand nowadays - unlike issues with gambling, for example. I think BTS Suga is a good example from this: his not rich background, anxiety and other struggels are essential part of his image and story. Not to say that they aren't real or sad, of course. It's just a good example of how tragedies are much more acceptable and even fascinating when it comes to good looking and talented people. If he was over-weight and unemployed, his depression would just be a number in the statistics.

And it was always an escape and still is for me imagining those "perfect" people who don't really exist IRL but you can self insert or have feelings for. I started listening to Kpop in my late teens but I have this thing where I am not attracted to really good looking people IRL...like it's complicated but if I see a good looking person in real life who is really physically attractive I feel like I cannot trust them or be attracted to them even if maybe they really do have a good heart. I still enjoy to look at them, but in the same way I enjoy to look at a beautiful painting or well designed object. Being as perfect looking as a Kpop idol makes my brain see a real human being somewhere between someone I cannot trust and a nice pair of shoes. I know that sounds horrible because Kpop Idols are humans too and deserve to be treated like humans but it's just the way my mind works. And at least it has saved me from turning into some kind of crazy saesang since I've been a Kpop fan for 12-15 years now. It also means that in my real dating life I only date people for their personality, but then I can escape to the world of books and manga where I don't have that same reaction because I know for sure it's just a fantasy.

I'm not a huge fan of the "idols are so busy" narrative. Yes, they are busy. But so are lawyers, so are stockbrokers, so are doctors, and in all these jobs people manage to find time outside of work to have their hobbies, go to events and get laid. I say the last part specifically because I think the "idols are so busy" narrative comes largely from this "my idol is too busy to date" narrative. Attractive males who have the opportunity to have sex are having sex. I'm sorry if that bursts bubbles, people will make time out of their busy schedules for things like this. There are things in life people aren't too busy for, really ever.

Totally agree, I’ve also seen a Korean fan comment that they don’t want the idols dating because it will get on the way of their career, and that’s so bizarre to me. Her argument was that the fans are the ones that invested into their career and they’re paying for them, so they have the right to be made. Against absolute bizarre. I made a point to that they’re paying for the products(including the music) they get what they’re paying, not the idols life. And also it’s their life, they’re choice, if they’d want to continue or not. Everyone that works gets paid, so what? That would mean no one should have a personal life.

It has nothing to do with how much work they have but more about the schedules. Idols have to shoot music videos in like 28 hours to 2/3 days straight and maybe even more. They can have schedules at any point of time, no matter how late it maybe. You see all these music show performances which require almost the whole day with the amount of rehearsals before the live performance and yet even between that they go for other schedules like radio shows, etc. Sometimes they literally have a little bit of food in the car. I think only doctors can compare to such lifestyle and it's quite exhausting physically and mentally bcoz they have to dance and sing and even the korean variety shows are really exhausting and then the whole mental aspects comes in and no matter how strong they are, it's still going to be atleast exhausting if not depressing with all the attention and scrutiny they receive. It's not about how busy they are per day but rather how inconsistent the timings in their scheduling is and it's a particular lifestyle that jobs don't necessarily have. But I will agree that doctors, especially interns and residents and others working in ER or in times like now with covid and all have fucked up schedules as well. But once your over with it, and you're practicing your specialisation, the schedule is still much better then.

My comment is specifically for people who are give the reason for not having much hobbies other than their work. It's nothing to do with their sex life or anything. I only elaborated on it bcoz we can't simply deny that idols do have a really busy life tho which does fuck up their personal life tbh

@@blairwrelos1891 Wall street bankers can work 80-90 hours a week. Each legal profession has their busy season and during that season you may work through many nights as well. You can easily work that much in big law. Is it exactly as much? More? Who knows, probably varies person to person, season to season, and the difference at that point is splitting hairs. I'm not going to accuse you of having that perspective, I understand you're just saying a very narrow thing. Being busy with work can affect your personal life. Ok, well that's obvious. But the erroneous assumption that some people make is that simply because people's personal lives may be affected by work, that they then must not have personal lives. Yeah you might miss some football games or not be able to go golfing or not see your girlfriend much for even weeks at a time but you will still do all those things eventually, and much more so in less busy periods.

@@asecmimosas4536 I think you're not understanding in what sentiment I'm trying to explain. What I'm trying to say is most idols don't get much vacation or rest bcoz they are constantly under scrutiny. Like Soobinie said, idols are expected to practice when they don't have any schedules and even their scheduling is mostly very messed up compared to jobs which are still way more systematic in its timings. Also idk if you live in an asian country but the work expectations in asian countries is just a lot. Most foreigners in korea would agree that Koreans need more Holidays. Now think about the idols, they barely have vacations forget about weekdays. Even if they want to have hobbies, they would be so tired that they would just prefer to rest. That's why I agreed on the comparison with Doctors. My point is it's unnecessary for us to expect them to have hobbies bcoz different people have different capacities and to simply shove off the reason that their busy schedules don't allow them to be productive in other areas isn't our place to decide either. Also I'm pretty sure that most people who are at jobs aren't being scrutinized of what they do unlike kpop idols who do bcoz they have to keep up this certain curated "image". Obviously there are idols who despite their schedules still make time for hobbies but for a lot of idols, we also see that they really don't do much and simply rest and relax, we even see some idols saying that they don't really much friends apart from their group which obviously could be just their personality but also sometimes they just stay at home whenever they can rest, doesn't mean it's an excuse or sth it's just different people have varying levels of energy to spend on various activities 🤷🏻‍♀️

I know I'm writing this 2 years late, but some of these comments invalidating Soobin's answers are kind of baffling to me. Like, even if you think her time in the industry was too short to be called an expert (which, I don't get as she was in Blady for around 4 years and lord knows how long she was a trainee), she still has WAY more experience than anyone here in the comment section. Not only has she been through the process, but she also knows others who have as well. Now I will grant that she can only talk about the things she's seen or heard, and given she was from a smaller company she'll be more familiar with that aspect, but that doesn't mean you can discredit all her answers. You don't have to be super famous to experience all of those things, let alone know people who have. Now, I'm sure if Dahyun from TWICE could sit down and spill the tea her stories would be different, but she's at a different level. I'm sure idols that high up are treated different and they can get away with things those in smaller companies can't, BUT there also is common ground. She would have had to go through the process, just like Soobin. She will have seen the dating, the surgeries, the fan culture, experienced the limitations given by the company....everything that was discussed here. It's just her experience would be more specific to her situation.

Kpop industry has a lots of problem and deserves all the criticism and should be addressed. But I have seen the hypocrisy of westerners and their media who started this dark side of Kpop narrative when it started getting popular. May be because it was something non-western non-English getting popular that was being seen as a threat.Many of the problems here are very common with other fields like in sports training, football and even the American music industry, how labels bind them in contracts there too. The “dark side” exist in every industry. I am not saying it shouldn’t be addressed, it definitely should be. But when Kpop is addressed there is lot of pigeonholing and this narrative of “manufactured” as if they are not working hard or creating anything. It’s this western idea how one should be born talented, as if all this training makes your talent worthless Lot of it stems from racist stereotypes and techno orientalism and I wish people will address this more.

Are you okay? Of all idols jimin is one of the few who look exactly like his predebut photos. I highly doubt your feigned innocence of such a comment. Makeup and styling and for jimin especially I notice hair styling goes a long way, those hoop earrings he wears and when his hair is long on his neck in that kpop mullet style compared to short at the back make a huge difference as well. Of all members of even just bts he is the only one who doesnt look like he had work done, why 'fix' your entire face and not get a front tooth correction which he personally has said he doesnt even want to keep unstraightened. And for idols who actually do look different, in reality kpop stans would also accuse everyone in their own grad classes of getting plastic surgery too if they did not know them. And I'm not some offended fan or against plastic surgery at all, my two other favorite idols including all time favorite have definitely had work done.

So a lot of people are saying the idol ‘industry’ is unhealthy and I agree there are definitely aspects that need a lot of improvement but if you think of elite athletes, for example, they make similar sacrifices for the chance of a medal. They get up at 4am to swim laps or run before school, they don’t date because it might distract them ( or they simply have no time/energy for dating). When they are actively in events they might spend weeks away from families, they endure harsh diets and rigorous training often for no ‘reward’ in the end. Because Korea has a ‘system’ for coaching and training entertainers it highlights the hardships. Musicians and singers in the West spend also years pursuing their dreams, working several jobs to make a living. Then they might make a hit but get into a dodgy contract with a record company and end up broke and forgotten. In short people with passion will endure to achieve their goals and companies with power will support them or, unfortunately, exploit them. I applaud anyone who works hard to pursue their dreams good luck to them.

H.O.T. are at the age to be married and have families. I would expect fans of 1st and 2nd generation groups to be happy for their idols who got married and have families. I love Donghae of Super Junior and I would be happy to hear if he was getting married.

I have a question - does richness matter while accepting someone as trainee and picking to debut? Also nepotism is a thing in kpop? If not , will it become a thing in future?
@justmyedits6596
@justmyedits6596 3 жыл бұрын
Not really but coming from a well off family means if the trainee failed to debut, they still have their family's wealth as a safety net so they can recover quickly for a different career path. But if a trainee from a poor family fails to debut, that's practically the end of their life because they're already too old to go back to school or pursue another career. That's why a lot of foreign idols are rich or at least middle-class, because their families could afford supporting them going into the unknown in another country

I don't think nepotism is a thing in kpop .because if a untalented trainee will debut ,netizens will eat her/him alive in internet.you can see ,when a member which is lack in something,how much they get hate.like lia from itzy,she was in vocal department and other were on dance department.

But rather than nepotism ,kpop is full of company stan.if they hate any company ,they don't even look for their new groups.

richness: no, it's not a factor why a company (especially a big one) picks out their trainees. But being rich will help you when you start training and even after debut, if all fails or problems pop up along the way your family can help you out; also: by the end, most kids who don't make it big have no money, no solid education and are deep in debt. In those cases, a rich family can somewhat take care of you/your debt and help you get some other jobs. nepotism: not in the idol industry, cause netizens have never been here for that, on the contrary, if u have a famous sibling or relative you'll have to work twice as hard to not only be seen as their sibling, it's not like in Hollywood or Bollywood. But it might help a little bit u if you wanna do something else in the creative field.

In my opinion you can't discount a persons background. Yes talent matters but at the same time I am sure a lot of these companies have behind the scenes agreements that never come to light with these chaebols or rich families. Debut my daughter and I will invest in so and so. 🤷‍♀️

How/when do idols get permission/involved in the writing process for their own music/concepts/choreo? How do idols feel about developing parasocial relationships with their fans? If they are dependent upon them for their material possessions and emotional support but also will never truly engage with them I feel like that would give me a lot of guilt over time... What would you most like to see change in the industry and why?

from my experience following groups that go from company produced to self producing, it happens once theyve become successful enough and shown by helping with lyrics, composing, choreo etc. that they're allowed more creative freedom. it happened with pentagon, bts, and seventeen for sure. i also know that some trainees are handpicked to debut exactly for the fact that they show prowess in choreo or songwriting ( Pentagon Hui, Ateez Hongjoong and Stray Kids Bang Chan being one example for songwriting, all leaders as well which is an interesting thing to note ) as for concepts, it goes hand in hand with songwriting for some groups bc the songs they write will usually have a specific sound that goes with a concept that they might want to express; though mostly groups have a lot less say so for concepts, especially if theyre a group based in a storyline of some sort ( example being Ateez ) and of course both of these things vary from group to group, it all depends on what the company will ultimately allow for each group indiviually

She's on alot of your shows....is Soobeanie really a special guest? She's really a co-host at this point! As for blackpink, I don't agree that YG has very little to do with their success and that it is their talent got them to this point. Blackpink's career has been closely curated by YG, from the type of music that is chosen for them, the way their videos are shot, the style of show they make for BP, the number of comebacks they have, who they collaborate with, their endorsement deals etc. There are a lot of talented kpop artists, some imo even more talented than the members of BP, but the key difference is the agency that creates the image. I have no hate for blackpink, I was a fan during their early years. I'll be honest, alot of hate for BP, comes from two reason imo. The first is nothing to do with BP, but hate against toxic blinks. The second is the perception that they gotten to were they are without effort, that everything is handed to them on a silver platter (they barely release music, they are just pretty faces etc). But for me, again, that is YG doing a great job driving their career.

Right! They have little to no contribution in what they put out as a group, everything they do is closely curated by the company, they aren't even as active on social media or do vlives often where you'd say "oh they have a fan following bc they're close with their fans" it's none of that. And I don't mean it as a hate towards BP but there are groups that managed to stand out and get big despite debuting under a nugu company (bts, mamamoo, ateez too but not sure) bc they have a hand in their creations and don't receive everything on a platter. I just hope we get to see more of their talents as "musicians".

Let me guess, you’re an army? Makes sense because it’s the same tired excuses your stupid fandom used all the time. They’re not more talented than others who are less successful than them (aka don’t forget about mamamoo) or they didn’t work hard enough for their success (aka look at all bts documentaries and witnessed “true” hardship) 🙄Aren’t you lot tired of the same shit you keep feeding yourself and your co cultist on a daily basis about BP? Lol truth of the matter is you hate that BP became as big as they are without all the cheep tactics you all used to get BTS to where they are today. The mass buying, fake voting, VPNs, begging radio stations to play them… the sad part is, the only time bts made it into that precious #1 they’ve been salivating over all these years is when BP shattered most records with HYLT😆You were so threatened that you did everything under the sun just to get them that #1 before BP lol…but what to do? BP got to where they are because the fans just love them, they could care less about records or charts or trophies that was never their goal or dream…you idiots will keep talking 💩about them yet they’ll keep getting bigger with each comeback 🤷🏻‍♀️ one day you’ll learn to accept and shut up about it, or it’ll end up eating you alive and you’ll look back in 5 years and realize just how big of a loser you all were for hating someone who’s done absolutely nothing to harm you! You’ll realize that it was all your insecurities that made you hate and try to bring them down constantly. They’ll be fine, dunno about all of you though

4:39 its mostly the Korean K-pop delulu fan girls who are like that. An example is with Enhypen, in the choreography for “bite me” they dance with female partners in the MV and use to do it at concerts too. The international fans loved it and went crazy on twitter over it, but the women were cut from the dance because the Korean fans got jealous and mad about. I think i heard that some of them even sent billboard trucks to HYPE demanding the women be removed from the choreography. I know a lot of international fans were saddened by the fact that people who call themselves fans would do something like this because they got angry and jealous. And especially with that song “bite me” since Enhypen had made it for their fans as a token of appreciation 😢

I think the stuff related to idols vary based on the popularity of the idols. The more popular the idol is, the more freedom they get from the company. They have control over their own work/life or anything in general. For example, artists like BTS, Bigbang (only using these two) have lot of power over the company, so the companies cannot control them. What Soobinie talked about implies more on rookies or idols that are not still on that position to have their individual power. So it sucks, how you can't have full control over your life unless you're successful enough to have that privilege over the company.

Actually, as long as you have signed/renewed contract, no matter how popular, your company decides your amount of freedom.

If idols want to date and not have delusional fans then a bigger stronger boundary needs to be created. The idols should not be accepting expensive gifts from fans and saying things like "think of me as your boyfriend" and fans need to realise they do not have a say in idols private lives. At the moment it's messy because boundaries are being crossed on both sides.

But her version is the closest one to the reality. How many groups do you think there are out there ? Try it more than 200 groups. Now, how many groups are famous and doing well ? Not even 30 groups. So, now with some basic calculations you can see that the big groups are the minory, therefore the perspective of someone who's failed the industry is most likely the right shot than someone's who succeed .

I think kpop appeals more to a younger generation that's why the "love" tends to be on the selfish side. Like for example when I was 18 I hated when my stans date or get married because I fantasize about them. But then you get older and that "immature love" turns into the purest version of love- more respectful and accepting. Off topic but that's why BTS Army stands out because they not only have young fans, but of all ages who love them purely and wo judgment. Just total support. I seriously respect them. Maybe because I'm older, but the kind of admiration I have for the boys are not immature. I don't fantasize about them. I seriously want them to be happy.

Honestly most kpop companies know that female fans will fall in love with their idols. They will advertise these boy bands as a whole romantic dream that will make the fans loyal which will make them a lot of money. The reason why nobody cares if western Idols are dating is because they focus more on advertising their music/concept as a form of art rather than selling this boyfriend/girlfriend image. If we want to get rid of kpop Idols not being allowed to date then let’s focus more on making actual good music or even art instead of selling the person performing it.
