Oh Lyle, you left the planet too soon. I watched you tens and tens of times in concerts over the years, and waited in vain after the The Way Up tour for your return. Your mastery of gorgeous compositions like this heart warming one, your technique on keyboards have left me breathless and although I never met you, I feel the loss of your friendship. Thank you for all the wonderful years of sharing your love with the world. You are the best.

One of the best piano solos ever played. Let yourself listen and there will come a passage, a run, a swell of sound of such beauty that it will leave you suddenly feeling as if you will burst with emotion. I just turned 83, and am so glad I heard this before it was too late.

Being 65 now, I am unwillingly getting used to losing my musical heros. But Lyle ... although I so appreciate and love the brilliant music he composed and played in his lifetime, I feel such loss at what future musical journeys we will not take with him. Even when he was front and center, he was gracefully behind the scenes. I have always hoped for a Wichita 2 collaboration. Guess I'll just have to use my imagination. Thank you, Lyle

63 here. I remember being introduced to the Pat Metheny Group back in the late 70s by a friend. As we toked the bong, I remember thinking “wow! This guitarist is amazing!” But then, my attention quickly was stolen by the keyboardist. It was quite the struggle trying to focus on both of them while being distracted by the insane rhythm work. All were so haunting & compelling I was nearly pulled apart in all directions. I was hooked forever! Lyle & Pat will never die.

How can you not love Bill Evans, Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Bud Powell, Thelonius Monk, Brad Mehldau, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ahmad Jamal, Duke, Fats Waller, etc. etc. .... but, I don't think anyone can touch this for it's sheer narrative quality, and the amazing story line that it delivers - the balance and tastefulness are simply stunning. Lyle Mays is the Architect of Sound.

Not wanting to rag om Pat, because his music has been some of the most influencal music in my life, but after Lyle stopped playing with him, it kinda descended, from Orchestrion and forward. Thank you Maria! And you're right about the Bill Evans school. Lyle Mays is taking it in the best direction it can go. All of the most evolved artists (including Bach) started with a language that preceded them and penetrated it deeply enough, and injected it enough with their own sensibility, that it continues grow.

You can tell Lyle thought long and hard about the perfect ratio between classical and jazz chops in this epic solo. He nailed the balance as he weaves in and out between European and American, straight and swing, rigid and loose. He expressed all that was in him. Hi Patrick Johnson, thanks to you I have now discovered this album. I've obviously been a long term fan of Pat Metheny (and First Light!), but had not previously come across this one. I can't find a CD copy for any reasonable cost, so for now I've bought the lower quality MP3 version from Amazon and have been listening (very nice). You also seem to have got me into EST - I just bought two of their CDs today! I think at the moment though that I prefer your version of 'Elevation of Love'.
