Still have no idea how Mercedes managed to homologate the old engine and are still able to use it!!
@SmallBlogV810 ай бұрын
IIRC the BMW Z4 GT3 was allowed to use the M3's V8 because it came from a then-current model in their range, so if that's true then maybe the M159 was still in use on another Mercedes model the year the GT GT3 was homologated and that made it OK. Maybe that's also why the 'Evo2020' update kit isn't a full-on new homologation!
@km683210 ай бұрын
Its in the same manufacturer family. And its already homologated, why change what isnt broken, doesny make sense homologating the 4 liter engine. Thats why vanwall had to rehomologate their car because its a new engine from a different supplier
@kevinwho.10 ай бұрын
@@km6832pretty sure they are talking about GT3 regulations where you have to run the same engine as the road car
@km683210 ай бұрын
@@kevinwho. small blog v8 just gave the answer the M156/9 wasnt exclusive to the sls. Because it was in the same engine family is why they were allowed to use it Additionally look at the volvo 850 estate and the s40 btcc cars. The s40 never had a road goinf car with the 5 cylinder engine, but since the engine was already homologated and TWR werent using a new engine in the s40 the 5 cylinder could be used in the s40. Same thing applies here because amg already homologated the m156/9 engine and werent gonna invest in homologating the the 4.0tt the fia allowed the use of the m156/8 There is no rule that race cars have to use the road car engine

Had the pleasure of driving one of these at Donington a few year backs on a test day. Really surprisingly how friendly they are given the amount of downforce. Engine sounds great inside…you feel it as much as hear it. Throttle is surprisingly long and linear, and low end torque is huge despite being NA.

This is the type of content F1 should be doing to really explain the cars and what makes them tick. Great video!

I think F1 teams are too paranoid and precious about their cars to risk being so open about how they are operated. GT3 cars are available for privateers to buy, so there is no point in being secretive.
@lexusuk790110 ай бұрын
@@joelambert7128 Yeah I understand the need for F1 teams to protect their IP. I was coming from the angle of the focus of the coverage towards the technical and away from driver features/interviews. Like i'd much rather listen to a mechanic talk about their role than listen to Lance Stroll being interviewed at home repeating the same boring rubbish "We're all working hard at the factory. We have to keep pushing. I'm working with my performance engineer to get the most out of myself BLAH BLAH BLAH."

I absolutely love this series of videos. Honestly top notch! Please consider doing a deeper dive in the future. Most of us will be relatively familiar with the cockpit and steering wheel, I think you can be brief here. What I'd really like to see, is more under the "skin" of the car. An indepth look at the suspension, brakes, wheels, tires, and aerodynamic devices. All the bits that make the GT3 so capable. Thank you for considering it. I look forward to 80s and 90s vintage race cars if you have them!!

I loved the 3 part GT1 series, but as a big British GT fan this was my favourite episode yet! The drive from the pits in Donnington to Brands must have taken a while! What i really liked about the onboard was how aggressive you are on the curbs, must try harder on ACC! It would be good to hear your opinion on the new WEC and IMSA regulations and whether that has changed your racing plans.

I enjoy the sounds of these cars and admire how technology has become a huge part in the development. Drivers are still a main part of a winning team, probably more so than in F1 today. 4:00 "making almost a mid engined but front engined car" I don't understand why people still have to police themselves on this. Most people when asked to list the defining characteristic of a "mid-engined" car will tell you that its the engine being within the vehicle's wheel base. So why do we think we are catching our selves on some technicality? the thing is literally a mid engined car!!!
