DKW 1000ccm 2-stroke car racing

In 1966, I had a friend in high school who drove one of these. He pulled into a gas station one time with the tailpipe blowing smoke as usual. The station attendant warned him that the car was burning a lot of oil. My friend replied: "God ,I sure hope so".

Saab, Wartburg and DKW used similiar 1000ccm 3 cylindre two- strokes. Realy nice sound

My wartburg had much higher rpms. Weber carburettor transistorized ignition and electric benzin pump. holes in pistons were enlarged and more compression....

My wife and I owned one of these back in the late 80's - it was a cool car. The original owner tracked me down and bought it back off me. I sold it cheap but it was going to a good home to be restored.

DKW Auto Union , built a plant in Santa Fe Argentina in 1963 , they made thousands of those for many years , 4 doors , station wagons , even light trucks and kombi vans the 1000 s was the last series made , agile and economical even for a 2 stroke , no water pump, my uncle had one , we knew when he was coming!.

I remember driving 200 miles with my dad in one of these and getting pulled over by the cops 3 times because they had never heard anything like it before, one of them even rode with us for a while. 120mph and screaming like a banshee. Great cars :) Great vid, really brings back memories :)

When I was 18 years old I had an Auto Union 1000 S for Touring Car Races (Anexo J in my Country) in the class fromm 850cm3 to 1150cm3, the car was an extraordinary car!!! top speed of 160km/h ,compression ratio 9:1, and 6000rpm maximum!!!!.. year was 1967, by the way I had and still have the VDO rev counter identical to the one used in Martin Hesse´s coupe 1000. I love this two stroke engine, my father raced with Auto Union in 1961 and 1962 and was a real enthusiast of the DKW!!!!!.., thanks for sharing!!!..

***** Cameras/video makes everything seem much slower than it really is. Also, the exhaust pipe is connected "directly" to the thin body, amplifying the sound inside the car.

They're a bit on the heavy side tbh... the engine never was a big thing but it did what it should, move the car. It was a post-war sedan.

Awesome Foursome... I had four these fantastic cars from 1967 on wards... I miss them a lot... I could just about stand in the engine compartment and fix anything thats wrong.... U don't get cars like that anymore... Its a crying shame... Hahaa...

Some nice looking F102's there, I see. My dad bought one new in, I think, 1964, and it could go like the clappers despite the questionable interpretation of its oil requirements in those days in New Zealand. It was on Conti cross-plies, and I have no doubt that modern synthetic 2-T lube and radial tyres would transform it, had it still been around. It was by far the sweetest revving engine I remember.

Everyone who doesnt believe is wrong! It has 3 cylinders and the DKW is much faster than a VW Käfer! We have both, so I really say the truth :P And the racetrack is the Heidbergring in northern Germany, near Hamburg. The event takes place once a year at a september weekend, is organized by the Autounionveteranenclub and is called "AbDKWen". Greetings from Germany :)

AHHHH how SWEET IT IS! Martin, thanks for the BLISS you gave me, a huge 2 stroke fan! That old DKW SINGS! Only reinforces my (well deserved!) hatred for the worthless 4-stroke design! YES all cars should sound like this--and GO like this! I have a '68 Saab 96---and it has a DKW-built 850cc triple, and it sounds like this! Gets super mileage and never needs oil changes! The Germans RULE with those wonderful 2 strokers! Ditto on British 'strokers! I have a few of those too! FOREVER 2 STROKE!!!!

+4nuk8r rotaries have multiple cycles happening at the same time, which allows them to be a 4 cycle engine, even though they fire every rotation like a 2 stroke (and exhaust & intake every cycle, which is part of the reason they sound similar). low compression ratios don't usually decrease pumping efficiency enough to cause studdering at low throttle, but many rotaries that are built for racing have very large ports (analgous to a 4 stroke engine with high-lift cams), which results in low air speed when throttled down = not good air/fuel mixing = not firing consistently = studdering.

At the age of 14 { car lover , but ignorant } a man gave me a DKW with no title. I took the body off and built a full roll cage. I drove it off road as a dune buggy for 2 years. No one could catch me ! As a restorer 40 years later , I wish I had the car ! It was a fiberglass body , convertible. 3 cyl. 2 stroke , air cooled . What did I have ?

love the sound, and feeling the power, is that occasional clutch slipping or is it lifting a wheel and "breaking loose" around the second corner of the "s" bend where all the people are watching, either way, it would flog the little suzuki 550cc two stroke triples in the four wheel drives we used to get in australia. we wont even mention the 350 twins before that.

almost like it had the low end torque of a 4 stroke but was the nicest sounding 2 stroke i ever heard. almost sounded like the dirt bike that one kid in terminator 2 rode which the sound was modified by the movie makers, only my friends scooter actually sounded like that in reality.

no revlimiter means reving more than the engine componants can handle and now when this is a racingcar it may be needed to rev as mush as possible without blowing the engine up
