I had to school a darker skinned man from India about a decade ago on this same mess as well as one of my professors from Africa. I told them both that in the Northeast US they're treated as better than but go to some of those deep south small towns and you'd be begging for our help.

Us Mexican Americans - who had ancestors in the US when it was part of Mexico - and our men had to serve in the US Armed Services during WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam... to prove we are Americans. We were "Americans" before the continents were even named North or South America. Not to mention that a huge part of this country was OUR land before it was part of the US.
