I've had the old V-Strom, the new one which is a much nicer better looking bike and I presently have a CB500. For touring the V-Strom nails it. It's vastly more comfortable, with more room and stability. For back road scratching and commuting the CB500 rules. The CB500 is way more fun and intuitive in the tight stuff. It puts a smile on my face in a way that a V-Strom simply cannot. I appreciate the great gas mileage and for some reason it only needs a fraction of the chain adjustments of the V-Strom. This senior citizen appreciates the ease of riding and relative lightness. It's by far the best bike for me now. However if I was ten or even five years younger, it would be the V-Strom every time; in my case the 1000. That bike is a seductive beast with wicked grunt right from idle and killer brakes. I also loved the adjustable windscreen. The new series V-Strom 1000 was my dream bike, my favourite of all time, but I got old and it stopped being fun. Different strokes for different folks.

I had a 2007 V-Strom 650 for 7 years. Here are my opinions about it: It is has a very comfortable ride on the highway because the suspension is so good. There was no vibration below about 75mph, but above that it got what I would describe as busy, not buzzy. It just seemed happier below 75. The stock seat was not so great for long rides, but fine for shorter ones. An air cushion or bead seat cover would be all you need. The feeling of the bike is top-heavy and tall. Great on the long straights, but it tends to fall over when leaned over for curves. The steering is slow, but steady. You can certainly have fun on it, but riding a bike with a 17" wheel afterwards feels like a revelation. You do quickly get used to the handling. The brakes are ok, but after I put some "OEM" aftermarket pads on it they were much better. I wish I had done that sooner. The wind protection, this is quite an issue with this bike and it was hard to fix and I never did quite get it right. In my experience if your eyes or vision isn't just over the top of the windshield, you will have buffeting. I recommend the MadStad, but it isn't a perfect fix. Be very careful what height windshield you order with it. I feel the bike has good power, the only place it lacked was when trying to pass a car at higher speed, or a couple of cars. The engine just doesn't have that liter-bike lunge to let you inhale pavement. However, it's nice to be able to use all of the numbers on the tach without doing highly illegal speeds. You do have to plan your passes more. I never had any troubles with the V-Strom, it ran perfect the whole time I had it. It really was a sweetheart of a bike.
@OutnBacker
@OutnBacker 4 жыл бұрын
A good write-up. The only thing I would say is that the windscreen position is critical to minimize buffeting. I set mine at full upright and as high as I can get it. Somehow, this greatly reduces the wind that comes up from the lower sides - which I find is the only place buffeting occurs.

V Strom, very top heavy bike especially for short riders. I have the CB500X from new, 2013 model with 52000 miles on it. Great bike. Mine also has that weird starting issue you have, kick the side stand up and it will start first time on the button. I get 84mpg (UK) and over 300 miles to a tank.

I have the '09 Wee. For touring and general street use, it's about ideal. Heavy enough to have good pressure on the road at hi-way speeds and not be swatted by winds too bad. It is a full sized motorcycle with a mid range V-twin. It feel s very solid in all aspects. I put a 16 tooth gear up front to lower the R's at high speeds a bit. It's like having a 7th gear and drops the rpm's by 500. Back roads? What 's that? They're just roads out in the country. No different that super hiways regarding handling and speeds. The Wee rules. I get between 56 and 62 mpg per gallon. With a payload of 360lbs, I can load it up and just go. No real lack of power with tons of torque all across the spectrum. With just me on it, it has way more power than a sane person needs in any situation. Totally satisfying in all respects. There are reasons why the Wee was considered the Best Bike in the World for awhile. For non-paved, improved gravel or otherwise looser roads, there is no problem with the Wee. I do not recommend it for technicals at all - unless you are very good at it and don't have problem picking up your 478lb motorcycle and shrugging off scrapes. I don't like scrapes. Top speed? Does any normal person even need to know that? You can only go as fast as the guy in front of you in most cases. The Wee will go fast enough - even up the steepest mountain passes. Ugly? That's subjective. I think it depends on color, which fools the eye. Mine is the 09 which is silver/grey, and I think it looks good. I call it robust looking - especially when the rider is on it, the lines come together well. On the other hand, I think the Africa Twin, with its clashing tones, is not as nice looking. Just my opinion, which is worthless.

For me, the optimal cruiser bike weight is 375LBS, 400LBS being a close second. I find it's much more important to be able to flick the bike around an object quickly, rather than have a 'planted' bike that doesn't get affected by cross winds. I've never had a near accident due to crosswinds, but have had several encounters where I was saved by the light weight of the bike, and it being able to go around objects quickly. The MPG from the Honda can be increased by about 10-25%, by using a different sprocket setup. Same can be said about the Vstrom. Though those suzukis will start knocking if the bike is cold, or under too much load, and low RPM. THe honda is significantly better to me. Though I would agree, the CB 500 should have had a 600cc version of it. The extra 100cc would really be welcome. On the CB 500, swap the front sprocket to a +1T, and a -3T on the rear, and it'll be much more highway worthy. Top speed with sprocket swap, should result in about 107MPH at best (ducking), or about 100MPH sitting upright. Not that you'd want to go over 80MPH anyway, since it's pretty uncomfortable going faster. I've had my CB for 5 years now, and no issues so far, save for a valve recall.

I own a Vstrom 650 2004 since sept 2016. Got it with 28500 km, now it has 81700 km. Excelent bike for me, relatively easy to mentain (I keep a log with everything), got me no problems around Europe, never had mechanical problems. Yes, it is ugly. Or dull. Not a problem for me. On the other hand, I had an accident on september 1th, the crash-bars saved our legs and prevent a severe dammage of the bike. Now I am on reppairs, hope to ride this season, if the DA decides not to suspend my driving licence (problems with the neck and back, had to call for ambulance, refused to go to hospital). Very strong frame, very good lights (NightEye LED), simple instrumens, good engine, even if we ride with a total mass of about 450 kg (me, my wife and lots of luggage). Handeling is great for me, very easy to turn etc. Good old bike, I love it. Even if it's not the most beautiful one.

I've spent three days reading reviews for my next adventure bike. I am in regional Australia and we have large distances. Off the main interstates, there can be 300km between fuels stops the further west you go. The last bike I had was a BMW R65. 300,000km and stone reliable. I bought it in England 20 years ago and rode it all the way here. I have given it to my son to restore. So I will probably go for the VStrom. It will do the distances here more easily and more comfortably than the Honda and will probably handle dirt and gravel roads a bit better for me.

Price? What if you are buying a used bike and only have $2,000? The v-strom is the only option! CB500 not enough bikes on the market, it cost $4,000 minimum right now. But if you have $4k to spend and want better for off road exploring I suppose the CB500 is the way to go. If they were the same cost and plenty of CB500 on the market I would have gotten the CB500. BUt I am on board with you; so inexpensive to buy and such long life, low cost high bang for buck.

That is a good question. I think that is why alot of people stick with the vstrom. I first wanted a nc700x but they were much more expensive than the vstrom. Thank You. Long time V-Strom 650 rider, considering a CB500x. You confirmed a lot of my feelings (durability and comfort of V-Strom, crap sound of CB500X among many others). I am now satisfied to keep riding the Strom, and update to a newer model should the unmentionable happen on my current model. One BIG improvement over the years of Stroms would have to be the availablility of ABS from 2008 onward. Very reassuring, I won't open road without it.

My Vstrom I kept 11 years and made 57000 kms with never had the slightest anoying behaviour, that's the most reliable motorbike I ever had. I also owned 2 Honda, a 80cc Honda Lead scooter and a 125 XLS and both were pile of shit ! Bad road handling, bad brakes, bad lighting... you are not short, and in certain parts of Japan you are considered a giant. The cb500 is lower, not so much with seat height, but the way you sit on it is easier to get to the ground. The vstrom is a bigger bike, wider, taller etc.The vstrom is a better deal, you can get vstrom's for cheap because everyone wants the latest and greatest. I think both are pretty good with engine heat. I haven't had issues with them heating me up. But the vstrom has better wind protection, so that could be a factor in your decision. It manages wind better so it makes you hotter. The CB is much slimmer and keeps you cooler. For me the vstrom is better because i live on the east coast(DC) and the winters are cold and keeping the wind off you is the trick to being warmer in winter.

The latest strom is just as ugly as the old one. I wish suzuki at least made the vstrom ugly in a redeeming way.

@@motardsquid well, looks are subjective but the 2019 XT model, with the spoked wheels, mud guard, wind protectors, black exhaust and so on, definitely looks better than the old ones. I actually like how it looks, especially while riding it, it's not like I spend most of my time with it admiring it from a distance :) I have the yellow one and I really like that they use a black/yellow combo all over. The only silver part is the engine, no more cheapish silvery decals on the fairings, just black and yellow.

Still not used prices but if you like Stroms you can find deals on leftovers. A local '19 XT here is quite tempting but I'm concerned about offroading with it vs a used CB with Rally raid.

Yes, I had a 2007 Versys 650 and it was great fun in twisty roads. Not really a fan of off-road or loose gravel on that size of bike, but then I was running tires that favoured pavement. For me, the Versys was much better value than a Honda Cb500 as I'd bought mine used with about 18K km's on it. Excellent reliability too!

Ok..the cb is NOT 500cc bike.as this guy kept ...eluding to. IT's the same engine as the rebel 500 which is a 471cc engine.

Semantics. Bikes rarely have capacities exactly matching their model name and it really doesn't matter because different engines have different performance characteristics.

@@vytas5584 indeed but still. That's 29cc difference of misunderstanding. Facts are facts at the end of the day. On the other end..KTM calls their 8 799cc adventure r the 790 when it would make more sense to call that bike an.800. (Shrugs)

@@motardsquid Yeah..but that engine displacement is a hell of a lot closer to the naming scheme of that bike than a cb500x, cb500f, cb500r and rebel 500 of the 471cc engine that is in all four of those bikes.

Sorry, I gave dislike. It could be subtitles with metric system. It's boring to convert your those pounds and miles to kgs and kms. I know, it's my problem, but metric system is used all over the world with some exceptions. Even Honda 500 and Suzuki 650 - that cubic centimeters.
