Enjoyed the show Terry. I do not think folks understand the amount of time it takes to work through repairing old rigs like these. Specially when you work a full time job and then make time to shoot videos. As always thanks for sharing your knowledge with the community.

Brilliant, Terry. Although the time lapse video of the resistor replacement gives me false hope, it takes me a longggg time. Great troubleshooting tips as always!

Excellent, Terry. If you want to restore it to at or better than factory spec, it takes effort. With modern replacement components and test gear we should be able to get these radios performing as they did when the rolled off the line in 1948.

have a n57 with crackly mid band turned out to be corroded plate coil on rf amp tube , had to count off turns and rewind with new wire & yes its time consuming but it worked & tuned well all part of the restore of old gear! lov it

RF problems can be a true pain. We restored a 'early 40's RCA console and a total re-cap and resistor replacement, then found it had a missing band. We found it had been mis-wired at the factory! Connecting the wire to the proper wafer switch terminal restored operation. Poor QC on that radio. We spent hours on that set trying to figure out the problem too.

Nice work on the set. Working on coils can be "fun" at times. Sounds like Mr. bill was not running on all cylinders... Cheers,

I have a 1947 Magnavox receiver which pulls in ONE local AM station loud & clear at 1400 kc. On the shortwave band, no signal on the left end of the dial after 7 mc, and on the AM band same spot at about 710 kc, nothing to the left of that. If I did the Cap job and replaced all the resistors, I'd still have this problem, wouldn't I? The dial goes from 5.0 to 18 mc. The output stage seems to be somewhat OK, a pair of 6V6s like from a Silvertone guitar amp that I put in there...This unit should probably be on your bench.

Could you do a video on the repair and replacement of vintage AM/FM RF transformer/oscillator coils? I have a vintage Fisher 800 stereo receiver and was wondering if they can be updated with something new? They are all obsolete these large oscillators, and working on a defective one is like brain surgery.

Love watching your videos. I've learned a lot already. I recently bought a zenith x334 from 1969 and need to replace the filter cap. It's a three section cap rated 80mfd/150w.v. 60mfd/150w.v. 40mfd/150w.v. what value caps can I use as replacements?

Hi, I am new to SW. I have had people tell me to take my long wire and coil it. I live in an apt in the city. I can not have anything outside. If I take my 25 ft. copper wire and just make a coil will that increase the reception? I have it strung high op on my 12 ft. ceiling. Any suggestions would help. Thank you,

Terry, how can you be sure your reading ohms correctly, when all your resistors are in circuit, you will pick up capacitors & other resistors. With all due respect..... Peace..Hugh

Often, most of the resistors terminate at a fixed cap or a tube element pin, so that they are practically isolated. (If the caps were replaced as in this case, they won't be leaky & can be considered open circuit for DC ohms measurement.) The schematic will, of course, tell you when you have to lift a resistor lead to get an accurate reading. A recent SW set I worked on, I think I had to lift only 2 or 3 resistors.

all of the resistance readings are higher than should be , if the reading is lower then u need to disconnect one leg to rule out circuit loading

What willrobbinson said. Generally, things in parallel with a resistor will make the resistor read *lower*, not higher. (residual charge, or something reacting to the meter's test voltage could cause a high reading, but that's really, really rare.) So, if you measure it, and it's high, it's a pretty good bet the resistor is bad. And since most resistors fail by going high, it's a real time saver. Now, it's possible that a resistor has gone high, but the things in parallel are making it read normal. Not likely, but not impossible. But usually that test is good enough (999+ out of 1000) to move on with confidence. But in this case, so many resistors were clearly bad, he replaced all of them, so, no concern over a possible mis-reading.

I wish you can fix my oscilloscope. It keeps blow fuse away. Its made by HP vacuum tube. sixty years old. I bought it on eBay . It turns on for 2 minutes and then shuts off. When I check fuse its blown . Maybe I was using a wrong fuse ? What fuse in general do you need for vacuum tube scopes ? I was using 2 amp 250 volts . Is that right fuse. Or I need 3 amp fuse ? I do not have special tools like you. All I have solder iron and some basic tools like screw drivers drill saw etc.. I do not have those meters you using to test a components . I don't even know how capacitors looks like. How they look like ? And where do you get new capacitors and how much ? How do I know what capacitors do I need ? Its not like a changing light bulb in your living room. Or vacuum tube is easy
