This Ranger was recently purchased at the Chelsea Hamfest by a Ham friend of mine. The first thing noted was a stuck VFO tuning dial. The repair is not easy, but the condition of the Ranger warranted a full restoration. I was shocked how nice the front panel looked. This Ranger would be the star of your Vintage AM station. The job took a full 8 hours to complete. As they say, its a labor of love. The Ranger is my favorite of the Johnsons to work on. While I had the front panel removed, I took advantage of easy access to the function switch an installed the D-Lab K1 PTT relay. For more information on that module, see d-labelectronics.com. To obtain the F&T filter caps, see: amplifiedparts.com

Nice radio. I love it. I have been a CB Radio enthusiast since 1969. I was 12. First radio was a Lafayette. I have a Johnson Messenger 250 my Father bought. I still talk on it. Any way thank you for your channel. 👋🏻 133 OperatorKen

Undoing the three conductor power cord modification and returning it to stock is a good move. There is no reason to replace the original fused cord. Rangers already come with a chassis ground point to use if one so desires. I have had a ground bus in my shack connected to electrical/earth ground outside. I ground all my vintage gear to that and keep the original power cords in tact, as originally intended.

So Scott can get on your 80 meter net with his D-Lab certified Ranger he should have picked up the Johnson Antenna tuner too. That way he could load varies long wires and other home made antenna project. Lend him an old copy of ARRL Antenna Handbook, to increase the ERP of that beautiful transmitter. nice job N6TLU

I too have just acquired a very clean Ranger with the original fused power cord. I've not warmed it up yet on my Variac but I would like to hear your discussion of favoring the nonpolarized power plug. That surprised me a bit inasmuch as so many restoration videos advocate for changing to a three-wire cord. I have a Valient that also came to me with the original fused plug but with a red paint stripe down the side of the plug that was the hot lead. Your comments, please. KA4CID Richmond Hill, GA.

I think it has to do with ground loops and hum in the audio.
