Swiss Micros is currently developing a new calculator based on the HP 32Sii and I'm excited to see it's progress. This is a prototype that was sent to me by Swiss Micros so expect the finished product to be more polished with some additional features.

Just discovered your channel. The hp32sii is my favourite calculator ever. I am a radar engineer and watched your video playing with my 2x2. Good to see I am not alone. Subscribing.

I had a 32 SII as an undergrad. It was just the right amount of complexity for a chemistry major, especially compared with the engineers’ HP 48 calculators. Looking forward to the final release!

Cool! I'm a fan of swissmicros work, but the calculator I used in my phd was a remake of the hp35. One of the reason I loved it, was the conversion key. I was drawing in metric from imperial measurement (Canada)! Loved the experience. That's why I bought swissmicros calculator. This one seems soooo close to what I used.

Hey Logan. Glad to see you back on youtube after a long while. Firstly, please don't under estimate what your contribution has been to us, an engineering community that still use and appreciate a good desktop calculator. You've helped me personally so much, from my understanding of RPN to managing my HP calculators, I thank you for that. I know you've covered the subject before but, as a computer scientist , I'd love to know your recommendation on a daily RPN driver?
@west
@west Жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian! As far as a daily driver, I do love the Swiss Micros series even if it's just because I can backup my programs and don't risk having to enter them all over again. I use the DM42 almost daily but I admit I don't use most of its functionality. I think the DM32 (when it is released) will be a fine daily driver for a lot of people. I love the support for fractions and the equation editor. The 42 has the advantage in that its programming seems a lot more robust, if writing programs is your thing (and there is a large library of programs available for it).

I am high school teacher in Texas. We have a UIL Academic Calculator contest. This appears to be a new source of RPN calculators for us. I recently purchased the DM42. Now I will likely buy a DM32 and check it out. I used the HP32Sii back in 1992 in high school and college. Thanks for the info!

Awesome! My understanding is that they have currently sold a few units as Beta test units but should begin full production in the next month or so.

Something I cannot understand. Why doesn’t SM make a generic piece of hardware and then sell the customer the software they want with the appropriate overlay?

Nice! I've seen the videos from HPCC discussing a potential 48 clone, but this is the first I've seen this model. It's probably better to reverse engineer the software.

Wow, very nice one. I hope swissmicros launch it soon. I have a 32s first gen since 1988, amazing calculator, but I'm not using in a day by day because I'm afraid to happen something bad to it. If you have a 32sii to a side-by-side comparison will be great!

I'd love to do that but I ended up selling my 32Sii because I found myself using the DM42 all the time.

I bought my 32SII brand new when they came out and have loved it ever since. It's very hard to find a calculator equal to it, so this is interesting. I don't know if you are aware, but I think I paid about $70 for mine new, and you can not find a decent one for sale on Ebay for that much money. Maybe you can find a broken one. I did buy one with a display problem (as you have repaired in one of your videos) on Facebook and was only able to get that because the guy didn't know what he had. So if this product does all the functions and does them as well as HP made theirs, people will have an interest in them.

It's looking great, thanks for sharing! Are the pads on the back close enough to the edges on this new model? My DM42 is rocking like crazy when I press on the left & rightmost keys.

I love the DM42. The DM32 is probably going to have a release date of some time next year. Chip shortages are affecting even these calculators so they had to change the design a little bit. If they had stuck with the old design they were told that chips wouldn't be in stock until 2024 I believe!

This last calculator I bougth was a HP 42S back in 1995. This might be the next one. The 42S was great. But for simple calculations I always find myself using my older 11C. The only thing that I miss from my 11C is a display that allows to see the entire stack. This is precisely what the DM32 is offering.
@west
@west Жыл бұрын
I think you might be right. There is a lot of functionality that the 42 has that I just don't use because if I'm going to do anything complicated, I'll do it in Excel or MATLAB. But for simple calculations, the DM32 would be great. I forgot to demo the fraction handling but that's really neat and I really like all the readily available conversions.

I like your videos and have been following your channel for some time. Do you think that Swissmicros will release a calculator to replace the 48 49 50? My HP48g, 49g+, and 50g are now out of service because they are old and I use them a lot. Keep making these videos! They are all very informative. Thanks!

Logan! --you look 10-years younger than your voice seems in all of your previous videos! What a hoot! ... Regarding your keying in the equation of a circle: /Does the DM32 allow for implicit multiplication?
@west
@west Жыл бұрын
Thanks! So I tried running pi*R^2 without the multiplication and it said "invalid equation". I also tried pi*XY^2 and it prompted me for X, prompted me for Y, then said "invalid equation" again. So it looks like the answer is no.

That's a good looking calculator. I was lucky to find some old HP calculators at work! As much as I like them, I hardly use them because work is done on the computer. It feels like a bit of a shame... and they're supposed to be good calculators so using them to do arithmetic feels belittling (as if calculators have feelings lol). Maybe a waste of their potential/power is a better way to put it.
@west
@west Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know the feeling. I almost always have Excel or MATLAB or Python open myself. I've actually made some good use of the calculators during meetings but most of the time it's a quick multiplication, and an occasional log. Almost never an integration or a standard deviation!

@MarianneExJohnson
@MarianneExJohnson Жыл бұрын
@@west Cool, thanks! And I read on the MoHPC forum that it uses the Intel library, so it looks like they're just limiting the exponent range, probably to avoid issues with numbers not fitting in the HP-32SII display layout.
@MarianneExJohnson
@MarianneExJohnson Жыл бұрын
@@west Or they might have chosen to limit the exponent range in order to make their lives a bit easier with coding the internals. A lot of functions are easier to implement if you can defer range checks to the end, without having to worry about overflows in intermediaries.

It's been 6 months, how is the DM32 working out? Any updates?
@west
@west Жыл бұрын
Yes, actually there has been quite a bit of development work. The chip shortage that affected the previous model delayed production quite a bit but it looks like the firmware is in a pretty polished state at this stage (many revisions since this video was made). I don't know when the final release date will be but when it comes out I'll do a series of videos on it.
