Thanks for the great Video. I have a few doubts though, please try to address them 1. From the diagram we see that the I/O device is only connected to the Data bus, not to the control and address bus. My doubt is how this operation is performed, without IO device being unknown about the ram address where we need to read/write, and on top of that it also do not have access to the address and control bus. 2. Does the IO device directly access memory? or it access the memory through DMAC. My bet would be as you said it should be able to directly read write data from memory. But isn't that a security risk, I mean it can write any length of data and also it can write anywhere in the memory if it has access to the address bus and control bus, which can cause some serious damage. (this is with the assumption that DMAC is not able to detect how many words IO device transferred, which is my next question. ) 3. How does the DMAC comes to know how many words the IO device has read/write to the memory?

Hello, I've one doubt here. It is understood that CPU provides some information to DMA before it grants control of Buses to DMAC but how does the CPU knows about that information. I/O device never told this to CPU right? I/O device is connected to DMAC only, then how does the CPU knows and provide those info. to DMAC before granting access to bus?

i think CPU is the main UNIT, whatever is happening anywhere in the system, It always knows all the things. But as we talking about DMA only, So sir showed their relationship only, This is my thinking, I dont know if its right or not. :)

That's why you have device drivers in your memory. They decide how much and when to transfer. And whether to allow it or now

wr rd adress and data pins of CPU sends the information to DMA C so that DMA could set "control register" accordingly as sir said "When we have to transfer large Burst transfer DMA is used", if it is used for simple activities then CPU can directly to DMA's job... So, wr,rd and data pins on CPU have 2 purpose.

How word counter is managed? How is the the size of allocation is determined or reset if required?

CPU when execute I/O instructions,then it determine the no of words to be transferred. After that it store this value into word count register.the word count register is a down counter which decrement 1 as soon as the word is transferred....when count reaches 0,it disable the DMA acknowledgement signal to stop transfer.....

Thanks for your reply and making a detailed content. My question was while cpu assign word counter register how does it know user is going to type that particular number of words. Say here its 30. If users types more than 30 words then is new connection request to cpu is made? And practically does word counter stores decimal value like 29 or binary number? Here word counter means number of words we type in keyboard? Or It has different context of meaning? Thanks.
