Well, each film has revolved around a certain sect of characters and their respective species. The first was very Human-centric, the second was Bilusaludo-centric, and now the third is gonna be Exif-centric. Each one has a major theme attached to them: Humans and nature, Bilusaludo and technology, and Exif and religion. Given how the Exif worship Ghidorah, it could be that the ideological struggle is one of religious importance; the natural order versus a higher order. In essence, it's the strength of nature against the wrath of god, and not all gods are benevolent.

This video perfectly explains how MechaGodzilla City is the perfect antagonist! All your points are fantastic. These anime movies are more of ideological struggles than physical struggles and you have to pay attention to see it. So many Godzilla fans just want action, but never a story or a meaning. People just want to see monsters fight but never want to pay attention to anything else. I think that’s why people hate the anime movies and some people hate shin. They don’t want to see people. They just come for the Monsters and that’s it. But that’s not what Godzilla movies are. That’s never what they have been. This is why I love Shin and the anime. They hold true to the originals story telling that’s about the people and how they handle the monsters more so than the monsters themselves. That’s what I feel the American movies so far lack. They lack an ideology or message to carry through the movie. They just go through the paces because Americans can’t hold there attention on something if something visually exciting isn’t happening on screen. But the Japanese audiences can. That’s why I feel a majority of the hate for the anime is exclusively from western fans. I haven’t seen many Japanese hate them if at all. This is a great video DMan keep up the amazing work!

In fact, I’ve seem tones of great anime and shows that do this RIGHT. But in this anime, I just didn’t see it. didn’t care about haruo, I didn’t care about anyone else! Most movies use all their time to flesh a character out, but they were to busy talking about things that just happened. Edit: and about the point that its about losing your humanity, I really only saw that point come out near the end of the movie. I would have loved if this was the theme of the whole movie! I still do like mechag city And I don’t think its what makes the movie bad, I just don’t like the execution.

Some people find Mechagodzilla City to be a disappointing adaptation of the character because the City itself has no semblance of a character or personality, or anything to imprint upon - it's a _silent_ bunch of buildings. All the other Mechagodzillas have a personality to them, with perhaps the arguable exception of Super Mechagodzilla (whose movie's theme was that of life vs. artificial life... but even then, the Heisei MG still roared and fought Godzilla head-on). ~Titano

Hi Titano
@DMan19546 жыл бұрын
The way I see it, only Kiryu had personality. Mechagodzilla (1974/75) acted under the orders of either the alines or Katsura. He never did anything on his own. He never defied an order. Therefore he had no personality. Super Mechagodzilla has literally no personality because he is man operated like a big gun. Kiryu had a personality and a character arc. So for me, Mechagodzilla City doesn't betray the characterization established before this point. That being said, I totally understand why people hate Mechagodzilla City. I think the decision to make Mechagodzilla into a city is very questionable as the same effect could have been achieved if the nano metal was acting on its own with its own orders from back in the day. Making it Mechagodzilla City feels like a disingenuous attempt to establish a connection between the viewer and the character. At the end of the day, I still like Mechagodzilla City and I really enjoyed City On The Edge Of Battle. I think (if my analysis was correct) this was one of the coolest intelectual Godzilla movies out there.

The anger and hate against Mechagodzilla is justified in some cases, especially against the what it was advertised. One big criticism is that the city was just a big factory with dinky turrets and a big chasm. Nothing special. The city ITSELF could've been the monster. A giant venus flytrap with arms and teeth bursting out of the buildings and trapping him with nanometal to absorb and torture him. I've seen a ton of really cool ideas like how Mechagodzilla could've had its own character arc and developed a relationship with the human characters instead of mindlessly consuming and following orders. Then again, Godzilla obliterated the facility and only half of the A.I. is still functioning. A neat idea regardless.
@acGyakushu_and_Shin6 жыл бұрын
Funny enough, I was one of those people who thought about giving this Mechagodzilla a character arc and relationship with the humans. Then again, if the movie used my idea, then we wouldn't have had the interesting symbolism D Man brought up.
@DMan19546 жыл бұрын
There is a trade-off. We could have had a more interesting battle which would have made the whole movie more entertaining or we could have the quiet ideological struggle we got. Personally, I would like this movie to be left how it is. The next movie... I want to be crazy (I know it won't be, but still) I want Mechagodzilla to retaliate against Godzilla. I want Mothra hatching and trying to stop Godzilla. I want Ghidorah descending from the void and destroying the planet. I want Godzilla, Mothra, and maybe Mechagodzilla to team up against Ghidorah. In the end only a weakened Mothra survives. I think that would be awesome. But in the end we will get another quiet film with a small battle. It will be a struggle between self identity and religous control. It will be great for analysis but not great for viewing.

D Man1954 D Man1954 D Man1954 This anime trilogy has got my brain ABSOLUTELY buzzing with numerous ideas on how to remake this trilogy. I've been thinking ( but not planning on writing lol) on a "Godzilla Anime Trilogy Rewrite" to make the story more entertaining, in my opinion. Let's do the rewrite! Feel free to add your own ideas or correct any mistakes! Changes include : -The first film would be focused on the events of the "Monster Apocalypse" novel with the war against the kaiju (Highlight would especially be Gigan's brawls with Godzilla) and the later half until the end would have the humans arrive on Earth, fend off or escape loads of kaiju and reach Mechagodzilla City. - The second movie would focus a lot more on Mechagodzilla, y'know, treat him like an actual character. I would have him send out drones to analyze and study Godzilla's fighting skills, strategies, strengths and weaknesses. Form an algorithm to create as many counters and contingency plans against Godzilla who's stronger than ever before. We would see the first half of the second film from its POV through the passage of time as it grows, observes Godzilla and the environment around it. While Godzilla severely annihilated its facility, MG would continue to grow into a city but also replicate itself, forming an army/swarm of 50 meter mechagodzillas and a 300 meter mechagodzilla. I imagine that any stray kaiju (not just Servum) that died or wandered too close to the coty would be dragged and absorbed for more nanometal. MH City then discovers a massive underground cavity where it forms a gigantic, Cloverfield Paradox sized Mechagodzilla to face not just Godzilla, but a far larger, looming threat. -Metphies revealing not just Ghidorah, but 3 extraterrestrial gods of destruction. A Triumvirate of gods if you will. Ghidorah is included, but the other two monsters are Bagan and the third being what I would call an "Eldritch, Lovecraftian Godzilla": the monster Metphies was referring with "monsters similar to Godzilla who ravaged other worlds". I would take elements of the third monster from Spacegodzilla, Orga, the Trilopods and Demon Godzilla from Godzilla in Hell. The Bilusaludo would fear him just like the Exif fear Ghidorah. They would base Mechagodzilla's design from this monster. Man, this is my longest comment ever. Call these ideas too pandering or fanservice-y but I have to get these thoughts out of my head!
@acGyakushu_and_Shin6 жыл бұрын
Here are my ideas on how I would rewrite the films: -The first film would be similar to how the actual film is but with a twist: Godzilla has somehow created clones of some of the other monsters that were in this universe while incorporating his own characteristics into them. For instance, a flock of dark blue Rodans with Godzilla dorsal plates, Anguiruses with the club on his tail in the shape of a pine tree, etc. Also, maybe have it seem obvious that Godzilla Filius is following the human characters throughout the movie. -In the second movie, it would be revealed that the reason Mechagodzilla didn't originally activate was because he knew he still wouldn't be able to beat Godzilla in his current state, so he created an entire city with weapons. When the characters get to where the head would be, they see Mechagodzilla, who interacts with them and seems to have a good relationship with them. When they're attacking Godzilla, MechaG grows to 300 meters and fights Godzilla to buy time for the characters. When the Bilusaludo betray them, Mechagodzilla tries to rebel against his creators, only for them to control him, leading him to consume Yuko against his will. When Haruo saves Godzilla, a damaged MechaG breaks free and picks up Haruo and Yuko, and he deposits them where they would be at the end of the film. He then sorrowfully looks at them as he gets destroyed by Scarlet Godzilla Earth. For the third movie, maybe have Ghidorah be aware of Godzilla's existence and create Spacegodzilla to kill Godzilla, only for Godzilla to win. That's when Ghidorah fights Godzilla.

Admittedly, you make a valid argument that has made me grown to appreciate MechaGodzilla City as an antagonist, though he is still not my favorite incarnation of MechaGodzilla. That said, I believe Ghidorah will represent an extreme on the very concept of a "god" as another commentator has stated. The very idea that there are forces in our world so powerful, uncontrollable, and otherworldly that we are insignificant before it. Or in essence, Ghidorah will be an extreme of the "Cosmos" and our place within it.

IMO city on the edge of battle has the best climax of any Godzilla film It makes 0 sense to have Mechagodzilla in the film from a narrative perspective. Since Mechagodzilla never activated, there was never any guarantee that he would kill Godzilla. The humans already have a plan that is proven successful. It only makes sense that they would use that plan. (Keep in mind They had no idea Godzilla could convert EM energy into heat). Also if it took 20,000 years to create a city, it would take several days or even weeks or months to create a 300m Mechagodzilla. They didn’t have that much time. Mechagodzilla as a city is actually really cool. It's a giant mechanical city that's AI controlled. It can become annoying. It's a metropolis designed to kill Godzilla. It's the ultimate weapon. But because people didn't get a traditional Mechagodzilla Fight, they gotta complain and hate. Mechagodzilla DOES fight Godzilla, it's just that he's a city form. People that think that The City "replaced" MG, is totally wrong! The city is just another Form that originated from the Mechagodzilla Head. Without that Head, the city wouldn't be there. And technically, it's the old Mechagodzilla Base that was formed back by the nanometal.

This new mechagodzilla city is great. People are just mad because it’s something new. At first, I was a little baffled by how a robot Godzilla turned into a city that could do crazy stuff like poke spikes at little birdy godzillas and absorb people into itself. Also, not really a anime watcher myself, so the way everything was is pretty weird for me. But then I liked how we got something completely different then the usual metal Godzilla. It’s just really cool to see a completely different. Not just mechagodzilla, but the movie itself. From what I’ve seen, anime has always done a good job at exaggerating stuff (sorry if that offends anyone). Only in anime would we see a Godzilla who towers over mountains, and a city that has a mind of its own. Pretty cool what this anime has brought to the franchise. Good video by the way.

IMO i think mechagodzilla was handled well, i like the idea that instead of just making one unit that will ultimately be destroyed, it built itself up to have the resources to account for every possibility. I see mechagodzilla city as hal 9000 from 2001 a space odyssey, Hal's mission was to complete its task, like MGC's mission was to kill godzilla, both did whatever they could to complete the mission and they both discarded life to get it. MGC is an AI, it's learnt from its previous defeat and it has probably worked out that it will need to get something bigger and better in order to kill godzilla so it started spreading its nano-metal, all that time humans werent on the planet mechagodzilla was there, studying and finding the best way to kill it. Same way as Hal 9000 came to the conclusion that it would need to get rid of the biggest problem to completing the mission, which was life. This is the same as MGC identified the biggest problem to killing godzilla was life because the wildlife around it was essentially godzilla.

What I hate about mechagodzilla city is that it's just a regular city. If it had an AI that's connected to mechagodzilla, which runs the whole city, it would have been a character of it's own. The city could have interacted with the characters and would develop from being an AI that helps mankind to being an enemy by going full blown Hal 9000. Mechagodzilla could have been in the center of all of it, so when the city goes Haywire, mechagodzilla itself goes haywire as well (like obsidian fury). This would have given the movie a chance to dive deep into the complexity and lore behind the city, explore themes of inner struggle, or being in the belly of the beast, adding stakes and a very intense, personal struggle for the humans to maintain it. That I think would have made mechagodzilla city a truly unique concept, but instead it's just a regular city, built on top of mechagodzilla's wreckage, that gets destroyed by Godzilla. So much for mechagodzilla being hyped and advertised and next thing you know, he becomes the least important thing in the movie. Good job toho for luring us in for nothing.

Godzilla = Earth or World Tree Mothra = Oracle and benevolence Mechagodzilla = City and technology's power King Gidorah = God All this anime series did was take the concept of monsters and translate their beings into concepts. Godzilla is more of a force of nature than ever, Mechagodzilla is just as powerful in some ways being the exact opposite of science and technology proving its ability to control nature but at the cost of life, and so on. It's a great idea and I think it was handled perfectly. I know a lot of people wanted monster v. monster action, and while understandable, it really wouldn't change much. Mecha G could have fought Godzilla as part of the trap in the city, and (spoilers for part 3 of the anime) maybe Mothra and Gidorah could've fought in Haruo's mind. But those fights would have felt somewhat empty. They would've only existed to have those fights for marketing. But hey, since monster fights are indeed awesome, just watch the new King of the Monsters movie. That's the near opposite of this series. It's not a mindless romp, but it's story is more about getting monsters to fight than what the monsters truly represent on an individual level.

It’s not so much that I don’t like the city itself. But when they advertise MechaGodzilla and give us a city, then I have a problem with it. I also think they could have gotten the same message across with MechaGodzilla.
@mattiaberti91606 жыл бұрын
Netflix (If I remember correctly) was in charge of marketing. Sure they could have gotten the same message... But could they send it with the same charm? MechaG taking ubiquity in the City form rather than using just an individual body like the Mecha . That is clearly meant to match and highlight the Transhumanism philosophy of its creators.

I actually enjoyed what the Godzilla anime brought to the table, warts and all. It has flaws, most definitely. The first film is pretty weak, compared to the later two installments, but I think what it sets out to do is largely successful. But the thing is, to say Haruo saved Yuko is... debatable. She was effectively brain dead at that point, so while she is still technically alive, she may as well be dead, which reinforces the tragedy of the ending of City. Haruo was left in an unenviable position. On one hand, he finally has the chance to kill Godzilla, but that will come at the cost of his life, Yuko's, and Mechagodzilla City spreading to become the new dominant force on Earth, still leaving humanity with no home. On the other hand, he could stop Mechagodzilla City, but in doing so, he will destroy the alliance between humanity and the Bilusaludo, lose what may very well be humanity's best shot at killing Godzilla, and allow his hated enemy to emerge triumphant once again and rule the planet. And the ultimatey tragedy is that it was all Haruo's own fault. His drive, his destructive resolve to kill Godzilla landed him there, faced with those two evils. While he chose the lesser of the two, it still left Godzilla alive and free to rule the planet, meaning all of his efforts were for nothing, and in fact left him with less than he started, costing Yuko, Galu-gu, and the Bilusaludo.
@DMan19544 жыл бұрын
I think there's one important thing to mention here. We now have the power of hindsight. When I made this video, Godzilla The Planet Eater had yet to be released. I had no way of knowing Yuko was going to be brain dead at that time. But I do agree. It is quite tragic what happens to her in the end.

Honestly I can't agree with the strawman argument of, "you're just looking for action" because I like to look for deeper meaning in anime and movies but Mechagodzilla city was just boring, if it was a living city with A.I. controlling it then it would be kinda cool and it would be interesting to see that but this, this is not mechagodzilla.

Perhaps not everyone but a majority didn't like mechagodzilla because there was no kaiju vs kaiju brawl. They expected these films to be generic action animes and were disappointed that wasn't the case because Urobuchi went for something more cerebral.

I commend you for your efforts good sir! you make a lot of good points with the themes and main ideas these beings represent but the enemies failure to give character to both these beings is rather regrettable. If you pay attention enough you can see what they represent but I'm not going to care so long as it's portrayed in SUCH a tedious and soulless way. You say mechagodzilla is an emotionless being but Godzilla doesn't appear to have many emotions either other than lime anger and irrational if anything, even when his son died it hardly felt like he was getting revenge and more like he randomly woke up! I would get the idea of mechagodzilla being this corrupting murderous force if it acted on its own volition more but the most we saw was it stabbing some servum, rest of the time the humans and aliens were pulling the strings. It only spread enough to adequately prepare itself to fight Godzilla and to defend itself, it only threatening to consume everything when it was ordered to so I don't think it counts. I feel like had given Godzilla a more emotive and expressive design and new roar to portray his emotions it would have helped to get what he's really about. And if they had mechagodzilla city doing the fighting instead of the humans, like the actual buildings becoming animate. Trains and vehicles crashing into Godzilla building collapsing over him, suspension wires wrapping around him while tying to convert him with mechagodzilla heads popping up everywhere. Maybe I'm asking for too much with that sort of fight but As it stands it might as well have been the billsulido being the character foil in fighting a natural disaster with a face on it. Empty puppets manipulated by their themes and not enhanced by them.

An interesting perspective. I can definitely understand the issue with Godzilla. I have the same issue with him. What I really loved about City on the Edge of Battle was the unsettling vibe I got from Mechagodzilla City. Throughout the entire movie, I got this feeling that something was terribly wrong that everyone else was oblivious to. I also figured the main kaiju in these these films represent something important in real life. -*Godzilla Earth* is a representation of the earth itself and nature's wrath towards mankind. -*Mechagodzilla City* is, like you said, technological advancement. But I also figured it could also be deforestation since it would consume the earth as Metphies said. -*Mothra* could be adaptation to one's environment and perhaps the rebirth of something old, just in a different perspective. -*Ghidorah* could be a representation of death and the the cup of God's wrath in Revelation 14:10 since he is referred to as the God of the Void.

City on the edge of Battle has one of the most emotional and best climaxes of the Godzilla franchise. The bilusaludo the movie's antagonists are categorised as condescending atheist types like the black hole planet three aliens from the Showa Era. Mechagodzilla is given an interesting new spin, yeah it would have been awesome to see him actually fight Godzilla like it was originally planned but IMO it would have made the movie feel hollow. The philosophical arguments the characters had was interesting. Haruo being forced to make a choice bw killing Godzilla and fulfilling his destiny or destroying the nanometal and Saving his girlfriend Yuko and the Last of earth from Mechagodzilla who's the true villain. This also gives a good representation of what each entry in the Trilogy is: Planet of the Monsters: Humanity and Nature City on the Edge of Battle: Bilusaludo and Technology The Planet Eater: Exif and Religion, Houtua and Life

While you managed to make some points of deeper analysis, and while I don't have a problem with Godzilla being a plant or Mechagodzilla being a city (or even Ghidorah being 3 celestial spirit snakes coming out of black holes) the real problem is within PRESENTATION. Mechagodzillacity can not even be counted as an antagonist or any kind of character because it's not a character, it's just a collection of pillars and domes of metal that kills stuff and has zero character. Same goes with Godzilla himself, biggest incarnation? yes. Ruler of earth? yes. Character? No. It's just a big dumb walking mountain who destroys stuff. I don't think Godzilla cared about fillius or considered him like a son or anything (cause he is shown to have the sympathetic capacity and range of a potato) he was awakened only because of plot convenience. That's the thing with these Anime films. They had some interesting ideas but in the end the final product is uninspired, uninteresting and a pain to watch. And the deconstructed and characterless monsters along with a cast of the most boring human and humanoid characters is not helping it.
