I was the only one in the world to beat Paul Germain when he was in his prime as a Taekwondo athlete. I beat him in his own country in Quebec, Canada. May 27, 1985. Search the archives. I am Edgar Bonilla and I represented the ITF Puerto Rico in several international tournaments around the world. I won the gold medal at the 1st Intercontinental Coupe Championship in Quebec, Canada. And bronze medal at the 1984 ITF World Taekwondo Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

@@teovu5557 - No worries- However, see the links from photos.1. The 1st one from Glasgow, Scotland I took the Bronze medal the first time I fought him.( photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipP_pwlhiAM_73hJZAbxvcAh72U9IfwMWXb3BTdU ) 2. This link from a local newspaper in Quebec Canada. ( photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipP-sMX9HzBobli29OXMIv5HB_ADLSdL5XX-VIsd ) 3. In Quebec, Canada at the podium receiving the Gold medal. ( photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipNnohqb4Y2mL3AIwzujzx5kY4l9KaJTdHREHbtf ) just copy & paste. I fought him on three occasions: 2 won and 1 loss. They were hard fights with a lot of techniques and conditioning. The only way to beat him.

I was a green belt at this time. This was with the UKTA based in North London. This was a BIG tournament back in the day. I used to hate those 'SuperTag' gloves

One thing I see in everyday taekwondo similar from then in 1984 to now is that people struggle on the tenet of self control since people often lost their temper during these tournaments and championships

Well when the rules are light contact yet it is supposed to be a combat sport, and when judges score points on a simple feathery foot brush with the toes on the body, people get mad and want to actually fight. This is why light contact is so stupid. It's frustrating and a dumb sport.

Thanks for uploading this. I was there as a spectator, my instructor and a few others were competing. I bought this video, made by Crosswind I think. Foolishly I leant it to someone and never saw it again. I don't suppose there's any way I could obtain a copy?

there was lots of contact,it was never non contact in practise. The injuries were largely because nobody was trained to deal with punches and the gloves they wore were totally inadequate protection.

@@duvauclin5424 no,they wore boxing gloves and bigger 16oz in sparring and headguards while tkd wore tiny foam gloves designed only for light contact.MMA is new concept where they are trained to deal with the punches and have the option of grappling to defend punches.

Original ITF sport is light contact exactly like this General Choi approved tournaments. All of the ITF guys who scream on comments about how their Taekwondo is the real deal and superior to full contact WTF sparring are not being genuine. Both are sports, both have certain rules that are better and certain rules that are worse. Light contact is similar to continuous sparring at a sport Karate tournament. Light contact and no knock outs being legal. Not realistic or more tough.
