Un condensé de Shostako! Tout simplement splendide !

Wonderful plucked basses open the "Prelude" whose mighty, majestic theme includes superb horns.... marvellous piece! The "Waltz" is larger-than-life and gently playful at the same time. The "Scherzo" has an eccentric quality almost, but not quite, like Prokofiev. Another great Suite.....

The Phantom Regiment drum and bugle corps laudably performed the opening to this piece in 1996 as part of their champion-standing show "A Defiant Heart". What the Phantom arrangement left out was just how utterly Russian this piece is. See time marker 4:13-4:28 for a prime example. Think Tetris.

I remember that show well! I saw it in the stands at the DCI Finals, when they tied for first place. I was already a fan of Shostakovich, but I was unfamiliar with this ballet suite -- that Phantom arrangement was my introduction to it. That it was played by possibly my favorite drum corps brassline ever helped.

And what a show that was. Powerfully performed to near perfection. That’s when brass lines sounded nice

I came to know this piece through Phantom, but you are right, that section left out carries the poignant tragedy of Russia, something that Shostakovich never failed to convey, even in his happy songs.
