The pain and loss in this symphony is quite vivid, yet I also find it somehow lighter and more optimistic than his other works. Obviously that's not saying much if you think of the 5th and the 8th. There's a romantic feel to it, even a feeling of the beauty of nature (especially in the long and delicate flute solos) and at times it reminds me emotionally of the long adagio from Mahler's 4th. The suffering feels less personal, and the relative light of the first movement is then fully released in the subsequent scherzos. This work is often at the bottom of people's lists of his symphonies, but I think it's quite wonderful, an overlooked minor masterpiece.

"A Symphony without a first movement", as a witty Soviet critic described it. I love it, but I still don't understand it. Thanks for sharing.
@mason38457 жыл бұрын
I'm not exactly sure, but my best guess would be that since many symphonies have a slow second movement, with a typical symphony having 4 movements, this symphony's 1st movement is likened to that of a typical symphony's 2nd movement , as this symphony only has 3 movements, and its first is slow.
@brendanward29917 жыл бұрын
I understand what the critic meant. It's the symphony I don't understand. Sorry for the confusion.
@IgnacioIF7 жыл бұрын
I see how it's not easy to understand this symphony. I don't really think I do myself. However, this video might be able to provide some insight: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWiwgZZvgpp9pZI It's Leonard Bernstein talking about this very symphony.
@Quotenwagnerianer6 жыл бұрын
I also am a bit puzzled as to what is not to understand. Perhaps on purely musical terms it might be a little bit of an enigma, how these 3 movements constitute a single work. But if one considers the time and situation it was written, it is not hard to understand at all. But I also have to say that whoever wrote the introductory text in the video description did also seem to miss the mark. You have to be pretty shallow to describe the finale as exuberant and joyful. It is the same exuberance and joy that can be found in the finale of Tchaikovsky's 4th. It is fake. A facade.

Highlights: 1:26 5:16 8:48 14:26 17:14 21:07 23:33 26:31 28:19 This symphony is absolutely underrated. The sheer contrast between the first, emotionally pulverizing movement and the sardonic yet jolly last two is shocking. The first movements has sickening lows and absolutely heartbreaking highs. The middle climax of the movement stands out to me, I think what makes me love this movement so much is the last 5 minutes of the piece starting from the horn solo 15 minutes in. It's incredibly powerful, sad writing, and it really surprises me that this work, just by the first movement, isn't more recognized along his other great symphonies. The last two movements are just plain fun. On their own they don't really stand for much - on the surface they're just catchy tunes (with some really interesting solos). But the fact that they follow the depressing first movement makes the writing that much more ironic and interesting to listen to. Overall, it's an incredible symphony that really deserves more praise.

It's a bit like the 6th is meant to be a "complementary twin" of the fourth symphony. The latter begins extremely emotional with the cry of thousands of tortured souls and ends eerie, hopelessly tragic. The Sixth however kind of tells how the story continues: It begins in a somewhat limbus/meditation-like state and steers visibly to an emotional state (in the final measures of mvt 3) as extreme as the beginning of no. 4, but on the very different end of the scale. It reminds me always of the end of G. Orwell's "1984"
@ShaunakDesaiPiano2 жыл бұрын
If you watch Bernstein’s KZbin video about this underrated symphony, he talks about the similarities to Tchaikovsky 6 - both sixth symphonies, both in B minor, both containing long slow movements. This symphony, S6, could be thought of as a continuation to T6, since according to Bernstein T6 is the first symphony in history to end on a long slow movement while S6 is the first symphony in history to begin on a long slow movement. There are some musical similarities too, such as both symphonies beginning with a slow theme in E minor.
