I wish Pirog continued his career. Back then, those in the know among boxing writers actually picked Pirog when they learned Jacobs was fighting him. Dmitriy was that good. First russian boxer I saw who used a Philly shell while being on the offensive.

Thing is, few outside of boxing diehards knew who Pirog was during his career. He fought mostly under the radar in Europe. His real coming out party would have been the scheduled bout with GGG, also not well known at this point. Jacobs was a fabulous boxer, and this speaks volumes to how good Pirog was. GGG was a different cup of tea, a pure puncher, who could take a punch. Pirog would have had to box rings around him and probably hope for a convincing points victory, as despite the knockout against Jacobs, Pirog was a featherfisted puncher and I could not see him KOing GGG. That would have been in 2012. If Pirog gets passed GGG, no doubt Canelo, Andre Ward, or Carl Froch would be looming next.

Keep in mind, the great Pirog is up against the brilliant Danny Jacobs, one of the best of his generation too. Pirog applied all his techniques here to good effect. I think Danny was always a half-step behind Pirog, and maybe was not brought fully up to speed in training for what Pirog brought to the table.
