I remember the anticipation of Day 5, with England being in the incredibly rare position of chasing a win against the Windies. That was sheer magic from Greenidge, and brilliant also from the underrated Larry Gomes. That West Indies side from the late 70s through the entire 80s was untouchable. Set 342 for victory, and they didn't even need Sir Viv!

Even though it was probably the greatest chasing innings I've ever seen, I still have nightmares about it almost - what? - 40 years later!

That defeat hurt. It was never easy to beat the great West Indies teams of the 70's - 80's but to lose in this fashion - wow. Greenidge was magnificent.

)_____As you can see, England dominated the 1st innings & they also went into the 2nd innings very strongly. it appears that England thought that they were goignt o win this test I can remember the smile on England's captain's face when he declared. They felt certain that either they would get a draw or a win Unfortunately for them, they weren't prepared for what was to come--- Thats because Greenidge had it in waiting for them Bothan did get him for the knot in the 1st innings, and now Greenidge was going to make him pay- --he demonstrated all his classic shots to let England know that he did not come all the way from Barbados to get two ducks Botham got 8 wickets for 103 in the 1st innings, he was on top of the world, and I think he scored 81 runs too-- but in the 2nd innings, its one he would rather not remember because he had 117 runs scored off of him for zero wickets, altogether he had 220 runs scored off of him in that test series for his 8 wickets-----he should be happy with that or did he? this is a win that will always be remembered by the West Indies------------ because England appeared to have had the better of the West Indies in the earlier aspect of the game, but in the end, the West Indies did what they have always done all along, which is, "Dominate"---- this was a Master class of batting from the West Indies that England will never forget--they never expected that the West Indies would come from behind and dominate a test where England had gotten all they wanted in the 1si innings going further into the 2nd. --it was a hard-fought win -------------------AND A VERY DESERVING ONE--LIKE THE OLD SAYING GOES, the race is not for the swift, nor the battle for the strong but for those who can endure to the end

My memory of this match is that, from very early on in their second innings, it was never seriously in doubt that the WIndies would win, such was Greenidge's dominance. He put England's attack to the sword.

People often talk about Gower's declaration as though Bob Willis and Neil Foster might have added 75 for the last wicket!

I felt certain it would be a draw. I knew England wouldn’t bowl this great side out in 5 and a half hours, nor did I think West Indies would chase down that total either, astonishment…

I telly scored on the entire series. This looked like it would be a tame draw but for an incredible 200 by GG.

Didn't realise Foster had a dropped chance. Pringle had a shocker. Miller had no control and Willis suffered from the commentators curse. Could the bowlers have got through IVA after he had annihilated them at Old Trafford a few weeks before? Very unlikely.
