Got the 600ohm today, sounds wide to me. It seems not as seperated in the treble compared to a Tesla offering like the 1990, but is still pretty good, and doesnt have the 1990/1770 low mid bump problem. Bass seems very good to me. Reasonably textured and tight. The treble can be slightly peaky on some tracks.

It is an excellent headphone in the 250 ohm version. Of course not as impressing as the hd800s but it is really kind of micro hd800s and for 180 euro for the well 250 pro version it is an absolutely amazing headphone. Yes, the hd600 is more neutral but for me the dt880 is quite analyrical but also fun to listen to.

Nice analysis. I have analyzed 990s and the 880 (both 600 ohms) and I prefer the 990. The 880 are like 990s with a felt in front of the driver. Even the mid range is the same with less decibels but they are more detail and have better soundstage, no doubt the 990 are headphones with which I want to constantly try new music, while the experience with the 880 is monotonous in comparison.

Yeah the 880 has the felt disc over the front of the driver (I think only Beyer with this?), denser foam on the inside of the cup, the same soundhole but with a cap over the back of the driver (where the "semi-open" description comes from). They got that dry Beyer house sound that I find unengaging. If someone is looking for a low-cost HD800 with lower technicalities go for the HD598 or maybe one of the newer cans in the same line up. Could you review the Yamaha MT5 and MT8 if you'd manage to get your hands on them? As an owner of both...nah, not really. Although I actually prefer the DT800s (600 Ohm version) as my general use headphones, and really only use the HD800s for very specific use cases (mainly with my A8 Realiser for movies). *I did change the pads on the DT880s though, and AFAIK you can't really do that with the Sennheisers. About to test the waters with the 1990s though. Side note: My original pair of DT880s that I purchased back in 2012 just got retired due to years of accidents with them, and the part of the cable that connects to the ear cup started becoming loose enough that the sound would cut out until I moved it around a bit. Got so annoying that I just decided to box them up and use the second pair I purchased two years ago as a backup. These headphones are so cheap now that there's no reason *not* to grab them if anyone is looking for a really good entry level audiophile headphone. They are one of the best sounding for the price right now. If you're worried about them being too hard to drive, just grab the 250 Ohm version. The sound isn't *that* different.

DT880 pads are near perfect... for the first 100hrs. Quickly went mush and dirty relatively for velour pads which not only worsen the sound but also causes my ears to touch the insides (comfort went from 9 to 7). The K702 is quite similar but not as severe in degradation with its larger but firmer pads, but the stock headband were atrocious with its annoying bumps and elastics that quickly went loose. Owned the old trios: DT880 (250 ohm) best for reference/monitoring, best imaging (ear placed dead center of driver) HD600 best for music, best tonality and mids K702 best for gaming.. kinda, soundstage is exaggerated If I were to keep one, I'll probably keep the HD600 for a baseline comparison against other headphones.

If i take a look at the DT 880 250 Ohm and 600 Ohm reviews from DIY audio heaven then i notice that the frequency response from the DT 880 250 Ohm version seems better. @Dex4Sure It would be weird as far as neither the 250 or 600 Ohm are bass oriented headphones. The 1db margin is quite marginal. I notice the trend of Beyerdynamic headphones to have brutal peaks at around 5-6k and 8k to give the listener the false impression that the headphones have amazing treble resolution and presence, that "sparkle" a lot of users speak of. However for people who have had the opportunity to listen to the high end headphones that are 1k or more expensive, good examples are Sennheiser HD800(S), Hifiman Arya/HE1000 or Audeze LCD series, they will know that what Beyerdynamic offers is not true resolution but just boosted dB of these ranges so the listeners can hear them better, also the V shape of the frequency response to further boost the high frequencies cuz the mids tend to compete in loudness with the highs.

There are pads you can buy that alter the tone slightly. I purchased some JMoney lambskin pads back in 2012, but unfortunately they no longer make them. I just don't get the midrange-comparison; just had a user tell me that the 2C's midrange is recessed and this seems insane. I know people are different and ears are different but the 2C did vocals better than the HD600-series. As I said, I know pinnas etc. but really? DT880 does not have better vocals in comparison, they might be more forward but the clarity and presentation leaves much to be decired IMO. The DT880, once EQ:d, do bass well, vocals good and treble great, I love the sparkle and clarity that these headphones have. Sadly they do sound like crap with crappy recordings, though.

Could you tell me , if they can play "REALLY" loud? I mean VERY loud, because the dt770, despite the amazing sound, they can't play in really high volume, and although I loved their sound, this was a deal breaker for me, to be able to listen to music only in average volume. Sometimes I love to live in my "own" club-head 😉
@DatHombre5 жыл бұрын
No headphone has a volume ceiling. Whatever youre running them off of doesn't have a strong enough amp and you'd need to get an external one. (JDS Labs Atom, Geshelli Labs Archel Pro, Schiit Magni, etc)
@DatHombre5 жыл бұрын
But also with that said, you shouldn't be listening to audio "VERY LOUD" unless you want your hearing to go to shit by 40.
@systembooms695 жыл бұрын
@@DatHombre with an AK4493 DAC, a vacuum tube headphone amp (as preamp) and a FiiO E09K as the final amp.... if it's not enough, I guess I'd need a power factory to run them! When I say they can't play loud, I mean without distortion, to the point that they'll get damaged.

For reference I have the phillips fidelio X2s. I like the wide sound stage. Out of curiosity are there any headphones that would also have that wide sound stage and a powerful sub bass/bass without worsening the rest of the frequencies? Is it possible to get something that can reach those low frequencies and still be open back?

DMS have to disagree HD800 are superior and if u can’t bear them it’s cuz ur not using a good setup for them. It’s about synergy, if a headphone doesn’t sound that great one one amp it might sound better on another. HD800’s are very picky so you have to pick ur setup wisely.
@DMS3TV5 жыл бұрын
I owned hd800 for a while and used them on a few dozen high end amps. Even tried the SDR. I agree they're amp picky but the FR is just straight up unbearable and the sound stage is ridiculously exaggerated
