I remember taking a trip from Carlisle to Leeds over the Carlisle - Settle line, back in 1976. Leeds West junction is how I remembered it. I always had trouble locating myself with the new(?) layout of the station.

When I was a Senior Conductors at Sheffield in 1993, I worked The Pullman Orient Express on a pre Christmas dinner excursion to York via Harrogate this way and back via The Swinton nd Knottingley joint vi Pontefract ( with a Route Conductor from Leeds) we came to a stand between Horsforth and Bramhope Tunnel and whatever was on the front of the train couldn’t get it moving again on the gradient so we had to have assistance in rear to push us up the hill. We had to walk through the train to get to the rear and it was like an orgy on wheels. All the passengers( mainly female) were drunk and kept grabbing my colleague from Leeds and myself. We had about an hours delay, no one on the train cared they just kept drinking.

I LOVE all the exciting track work coming out of Leeds! One the best things about coming into Waterloo. How come Harrogate onwards is semaphore still? There's the odd aspect signal too. Just how it was back then I suppose? Knaresborough is quite wonderful. Like going back in time!! Is that a token handover at Whixley?! Brilliant! York is astonishingly deserted of other rolling stock. And to those that complain about the amount of track rubbish, I give you... the last 15 seconds of this. 'Twas ever thus folks.

Very interesting watching this in 2023, how some of the line has changed in 34 years, i was a crossing keeper at Hammerton Rd from 2001 to 2018, very interesting to see what the line looked like back then

I think this is filmed onboard a pacer, but why does it have a vacuum brake?

I believe this is unit 141113 which is now preserved at the Midland Railway Centre. It’s got the unique Cummins engine & Voith hydraulic transmission as opposed to TL11+mechanical, and is clearly a 141 rather than 142 or 144 due to the pneumatic brake controls. 1989 must have been pretty soon after refurbishment from its original condition.

How come at 0:45, after a few crossovers to the right and then back to the left, it ends up back on the line it was on originally? Surely there must be bidirectional running on station approaches?

The unit as come out on ‘A’, you are correct in saying that the unit could have come on ‘B’ line, most probable explanation to this is that the signalman was setting up the route for the next train movement which will have included ‘B’ line.

can't beat the original traditional method of single line working by use of the token system which to me seemed safer than tokenless block which is now used on this route since 2021

This a skipper class 141 I went to Harrogate on one of them from York back in the early 90s
