Drawn out combat can be really grueling for everyone, player and DM. Kudos to Monty for pulling it off, and i want to shout out Bosco. He was constantly trying to remain positive and encouraging everyone, congratulating and assuring each person they were doing a good job with every move. It’s rare to see a player like that, and it just stood out to me throughout the episode

A young tiefling and beautiful drow woman look at each other with worried expressions on their faces, a white kobold stops in her tracks and holds her chest and for the first time in a while, utters two words, "please no", a clan from the far north all look at the sea, two white orcs look at a shirtless man, not bothered by the cold lowers his head, just then all of them, from the people in the tavern to the north landers, all feel something in the back of their minds, the evil god sneers in anger as he knows who this was as all those who were mourning, hear a voice: "Give them your strength. strength"

Honestly if death is miraculously avoided, the loss of almost everyone of their magic items is penalty enough for a fight lost. If they do live, which i hope they do, they're in pretty dire straights.

Calling it now: Panic's Canadian dragon girlfriend will save them, and last session (aside from introducing her obviously) foreshadowed it. Think to how Captain Clarence paid tribute to Frivayne visiting his ship. Now remember what the United Clergy did with some of the group's most precious magical possessions. I'm thinking the group wakes up in a coastal dragon hoard, alive and reunited with their belongings. But that's just my prediction.

I'm two thirds into this episode, listening at x1,75 speed as I usually do (since I binge at least two or three episodes a day, I can't be sitting half of my day at my desk), and this has felt like the longest episode in a while. And the combat is not even finished. What is apparent is that as soon as the team has not a coordinated plan, we saw that with Greckles at the Arkgenos fight, but in other situations too, they're bound to fail, because they split their efforts concocting different plans and rely on dumb luck that one plan will eventually stick. Adding Monty's luck with the dice, this makes listening to the episode grinding.

Personally I do phone and bluetooth earbud to listen to these goofballs play. Lets me get through like, 3-4 episode a day depending on how keen I am to continue the series. Actually on my second watch through of the series! Aint gonna spoil anything, but I remember watching this episode for the first time. And… Watching them all slowly get whittled down, slowly realizing they’re not going to win this but trying anyways. Dang it was CRUSHING.

Man the only way they could have won this is a defensive position with a wizard with the wall of fire spell. Like they were fighting like 8 level 5/6 paladins backed up with 8 level 3 clerics. Kinda hard for 5 level 7 characters to deal with that especially when their only main caster is a glamour bard.

I look at this as, everyone seems to forget edward enrabso took some of their shadows when they entered his realm and he mentioned that if ronfault was taken or lost he'd reclaim it. My feeling on it is, either panics dragon girlfriend will show up. or they're going to have to explain to edward in just how many ways they just screwed up in game i mean. i didnt mind the long combat tho i agree with most of the comment section that the rng was rubbish in their favor and the paladins were overpowered. though to be fair ARMIES ARE WELL EQUIPPED AND KNOW THEIR SHIT. I look forward to seeing next week.

Huh. Reading the comments I was honestly expecting worse at the end. I mean it's dire, but hell the main protagonist of Far Cry 3 was put in exactly this same situation and he seemed to do just fine. So I can totally foresee our heroes pulling a similar "get out of death" maneuver. And just keep in mind that in the past whenever the Unexpectables encountered a "suppose to lose fight" (which I'm still convinced this was), that she's always taken the opportunity to either introduce or reintroduce a new faction that helps them out and usually in a pretty awesome "fuck yeah" sort of way. So one way or another I look forward to the next episode. P.S. To Monty: If I'm indeed correct, I just want to say in advance that you are a mean, mean person for toying with all our hearts this way. And I love it. Never change you sadistic story teller.

Well even the entire Council of Alivast, which includes powerhouses such as Brorc, Ailah, Balfor, Abacus, and Edward, felt that Alivast could not take the entire United Clergy in an all out war. And this battle went a long way to illustrate why: the United Clergy has the advantage of numbers, equipment, and training on their side. So if anything this provides a stark and object lesson of just how dangerous they are.

Does anyone remember the part where Monty said that Task's bow can't do ice and magic at the same time? When he got it I remember her saying it's hail of thorns or ice damage, not both. Did I miss something?

The ice damage does not make that ammunition magical, it just changes the piercing to cold damage. So a creature that would say, require a magical weapon to do damage to it, would not take the cold damage, unless it is vulnerable to cold damage in some way, if that makes sense. He can cast magic with the bow as normal.

@@MontyGlu For some reason I remember it being explained as it's either Ice or Magic. He can shoot standard arrows or convert standard arrows to Ice arrows, but he can't cast hail of thorns with the ice arrows. Maybe it is the Ice≠Magic thing I'm remembering wrong then.

The way I understood it is that if he was going to cast Hail of Thorns after doing ice damage, the first hit is ice and the rest are regular arrow hits. He can use Hunter's Mark with it for more damage because that isn't a magic arrow. When he does the Ensnare spell, it happens at the same time as the bow's ability

There's no 5-foot step, but in its place, you're allowed to circle enemies with movement freely without provoking opportunity attacks. It's only when you leave their range that you provoke. (At least, that's how my DM rules it; I'm pretty sure that's RAW, though. I keep tabs on that sort of thing because I'm playing a bard who makes strategic use of dissonant whispers to spook enemies through a meat grinder.)

This is the most intense episode period. Taka and everyone else did amazing to portray this and I have zero problems with it. It's starting to feel like none of the Clergy's clerics are there by choice. Not just in this battle, but overall. Also, I was not actually expecting to truly hate anything in this campaign, but I VICIOUSLY hate these "divine" pirates. I am so excited to see how they get WIPED THE FUCK OUT. Also, it's sad to see all the negative comments here. A lot of people calling "railroad" on Monty, but that is not what I saw. I saw the dice relentlessly fuck the party, without lube. I saw the party fail to focus fire for pretty much the entirety of the fight. I saw the enemy have an Intelligence score above 10. I saw the narrative take a dark turn because of what the dice laid out. I saw the party thrown into a desperate situation. I saw the dice build a nemesis of the United Clergy. I saw D&D happen, and it was heart-wrenching and fantastic. And I saw the party NOT die onscreen, which means there is still a way out.

God, this was a HELL of a fight. I saw a few comments complaining that this was Crit Roll levels of Big Fight, but I disagree, with Crit Role there's a lot of silence and thinking and people undermining the tension, and here it was as efficient as I've seen it from you guys yet. And I can't blame Curt for forgetting reckless attack, game mechanics are complex and sometimes players forget in the heat of the moment. And Task, pulling an impressive hail mary off. In a just and righteous world they would be elevated as Heralds of some god of justice, handed weapons and instruments forged in the holy flames, and pointed at the United Clergy of Auryn like an ICBM to utterly wreck shit. I mean, let's count off the number of times they've earned favours from the kind of people who can do it - a powerful Warlock who can probably pull some strings, a Silver Dragon of immense power looking to redeem himself, a god who "died" but may not have stayed dead, and a Storm Giant who keeps an eye on the seas. Hell, I'd be happy if it genuinely did open next episode with Panic waking up to see his friends waterlogged but alive in an underwater cave, his Canadian Girlfriend waving happily at him. I just...I love these guys, and I really don't want it to end like this.

This session shows every dm's worst nightmare: A large-scale encounter, bad rolls from the party and good rolls for the npcs, and just general fuckery with having multiple npcs with player levels. Monty did a fantastic job with this encounter, but it was a mess to begin with.

Conquest paladins, eh? It fits, though I am curious what their oaths were before they were changed. (Side note, this isn't important, really, but Monty seems to have either mistaken or homebrewed that ability, the speed being educed to 0 when frightened is only meant to be for creatures within 10ft, unless he's level 18)

If you are watching for the story, do yourself a favor. Watch for the first 30 mins and the last 37 mins. The rest is fuel for frustration. Monty, I think you are a great dm. Hell! I would want a dm like you. But this is the first time I was actually bored watching an unexpectables episode. But hey, you are only human. And on the other hand, that means you had a 66 episode streak of gripping storytelling. Way to go! That is impressive.

Don't blame The Monty. This was the players fault. This was eminently winnable. Mid-to-high difficulty given the character races, classes and Level. Player inexperience and myopia lead to a 3 hour slugfest. It can happen. 1 hour combat, maybe 1.5. Poor decisions and unlucky dice. Pre-ramming, the fight could have even been totally one sided in their direction.

This comment section is pretty toxic with people condemning Monty. Writing a narrative is a difficult task, and she has done an incredible job weaving together a beautiful story with compelling characters. Railroading or not, the story moves forward and we watch and listen because we love the story and these characters. Let us accept this episode for what it was and eagerly await the next installment of the Unexpectables. I will be.

This episode is a rollercoaster of just everything, let's look at the party, I've never shipped to party members in anything harder then I have remey and greckles, panic and borky have kinda had a bond of friendship almost from the start even with all the accidental hits they still power threw it, and then task the red ball of piss and viniger with a heart of gold despite being so temperamental to help keep them together and in a sense in line, these four now five won't be taken by hokelth so easily I can't wait to see the next episode and see how they get there friend back and save the city once again

Now here me out guys. I don’t think we need to worry. This battle is clearly one they were supposed to lose. Now don’t get me wrong, they certainly COULD have won by sinking the ship, but even then they would be stranded at sea without a boat. There was no way they were going to chew through FOURTEEN PALADINS and TWELVE CLERICS worth of healing, and the ONLY WAY they could have avoided there fate is if they killed ALL of them because the only other options besides stranding all of them at sea was to either die, or what DID happened where they had the characters that the Orin Clergy was pre-established to hate being thrown overboard. Something more is going on. Also, and this may be a stretch, where are the sharks? As soon as blood hit the water there would be sharks rushing to get to the battlefield, but they weren’t even considered. The only time a hoard of small sharks don’t rush towards bait is when a much larger predator scares them off. (usually bigger sharks) and guess who was introduced last episode, AN ADULT DRAGON whom the captain said doesn’t interfere with piracy so she wouldn’t deus ex machina the battle, but would be willing to rescue those thrown overboard (especially Panic). It’s going to be one hell of an arc, but I don’t think this is the last of Task, Panic and Greckles.

Having watched this live my complaint was more from a DM stand point, a scripted loss that takes 3 hours can happen. But she could have done it in 1 and not dragged it out. From Boscos comments at the start of the stream I assume atleast he knew what was coming. As a player mind set I love this episode, nothing drives to vengeance like getting your shit taken. I am curious if we are gonna get to see them roll alts and save themselves.

This is a different world, sharks may not roam these waters, so they're is no reason to assume that besides there's already over 15+ in battle, that's a lot of stuff to take into account.

TLDR: The combat was meant to have narrative importance not to be used to decide a winner. And Monty is great at story telling if your willing to look at it deeper than "combat long. Combat was unfair. Boo rail road" This is probably one of my favourite Eps. The gruelling combat that turned out to be nothing more than training battle for a long time hated faction. The reveal of more troops on the stand by, showing just how overwhelming their forces are. And not to mention how this shows the viewers and the unexpectable just how important gathering allies for Alavast is now that they had a glimpse on what a war with the sun nazis is like. The fact that you striped the characters of all their prized possessions to give the characters drive to defeat the the sun Nazis and to rekindle the burning hatred for them that had died down a hit recently. The combat although long had a purpose, it showed use how they treat their 'allies', how dangerous and well equiped they are and just how ruthless they can be going as far as to raiding a simple trading ship and use a harpoon gun on a humanoid. Not to even mention the great character interactions between the cast and the paladins/clerics. We got to learn just how ingrained racism is in their culture that even after aiding in trying to murder innocent it took PANIC multiple Cha checks. All in all Monty you are a story telling genius!!

All in all I totally agree with your assessment of Monty's story telling. She's made compelling villains and NPCs that are impossible not to fall in love with but I think there has to be a compromise when you take something like that brilliant writing to a game setting you play with friends. Because the concept behind it is to have fun playing and while they weren't rude about it and I'm sure none of them are feeling negative about it in the moment you could feel the exasperation. So the argument about fairness comes more from people empathizing with the players putting myself in Monty's shoes I see the importance of how the clergy would do combat the most efficient way possible. Putting myself in the shoes of any player a combo set of the best healers and powerful heavy hitters doesn't sound like a fun experience. Though I think personally I end up siding with how Monty did things as this game isn't about only making things enjoyable experiencing the full range of emotions is what makes these things more memorable and meaningful in the long run... I guess my point is yes story is more important but I don't think that the people who don't like the move are coming from a bad place.

@@Lucarioly Not to mention, Monty DID throw taka a bone with "Do you want to finish him off?" As a reminder, to which taka said "nah ain't got time" and let him get healed back up again. The guys weren't exactly doing what they should've been doing to win anyway, which was executing people. Can't heal chain if one of the chainlinks is obliterated beyond fixing.

@@megasuperiordude That's not the point of the statement the issue is the perception of the group as a whole taka played it off as "not enough time" but in reality there was no time difference in saying lethal or non-lethal for the player. But in that situation I'm sure the consideration was if we do lose this fight and we kill them they're much less likely to keep us alive. Also there's the concept of being better people than your opposition and not just straight up killing sapient humanoids.

Considering they did not get any rolls when they were drowning. I think something will happen. My prediction is they will wake up on an island with no memory of what happened after they were thrown overboard. They will also conveniently find the equipment thrown overboard washed ashore as well.

I have seen a lot of comments about how Monty "railroaded" this session with an unwinnable fight, but if one pays attention to how the group tried to fight on multiple, specifically three, fronts and that the dice weren't exactly rolling in their favour for pretty much the entire encounter. This wasn't railroaded, it was stacked but not impossible.

even if they had all Focus their efforts on a single front these paladins hit way too hard and with the clerics with them there's really not much they can do not to mention there's going to be more than likely be a boss palette on that ship which they're not going to be able to defeat even if they got through all the rest mathematically speaking their Victory is just not going to happen

As much as we can agree thoes dice rolls where BS. This sets up the story in the best way possible. So far our group have gotten into setbacks and gotten out scottfree on some occasions. This is a loss. A carved in stone loss. But! This sets up the story for one good comeback arch, hopefully, and i cant wait to see how monty will adjust to this next session! I honest to God love this show it got me into playing and now dming and has change part of my life but I really hate how this turned out because the party mayaswell have given up from the beginning because it did not make a difference they would have still been captured as a show I fucking love it the comedy the character development the scary and the happy moments but as a d&d session it was railroad to heck there was no way in theory that they could have had a decent outcome it was just fight keep fighting o wait no point may as Well surrender I love this and hate this as a fan
