Great ideas. I agree that single-word vocabulary books are better for babies. I don't think those books are dry as much as geared for a younger audience. To a baby trying to make sense of the world, single words are great. But especially if one has read to their children from infancy, they will have outgrown such books well before they're 2. One thing I would add is to choose books that have large print. Some books are designed for reading aloud, with small print and big pictures. Such small print won't be as interesting to a toddler as books that have large print and simple pictures. Big pictures distract toddlers from the text. Books like Willem Mo's "Elephant and Piggie" books are especially great for early readers because the text often is part of the story-telling.
