I was raised by spanking. And trust me, it hurts more emotionally. Now, even if a stranger yells at me, my heart becomes stiff. It became a trauma since I was a kid. Please don't do that on your children. Not every kid has the same way of response to your ideologies. Talk more.

This is the one. I’m not even Asian, but istg, you would never know if I had a “stereotypical” Asian parent or a “stereotypical” white parent if I just described them to you. (My mom is white). But my upbringing isn’t the stereotypical “white parent” upbringing which is probably shocking lmao. It’s probably because she was also brought up the same way. As someone who also has an Indian aunt, she does have some of the same “stereotypical” Asian-parent-type ideas that are common which is why I can understand the pressure, such as wanting me to become a doctor and I love her a lot so I value her opinion. But that’s just me.
@zmrpa3 жыл бұрын
This isn't the case for everyone. I was raised being spanked and it didn't negatively effect me. I think it's a parents responsibility to understand that every child is an individual and reacts differently to spanking. Some parents fail to recognize the damage theyre causing.
@doodlebob11843 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. I was raised by the belt at first since I was a troublemaker at school, then eventually I started laughing when I got hit because I had gotten used to it. Then my mom started making me write sentences. Every grade I went up, the sentences increased by 100. I once had to write 2,000 sentences for cursing in school. That really set me straight. It’s just a matter of knowing your kid and raising them how they’re supposed to be raised instead of just raising them how your parents raised you.

My parents and I are sooooo close and trust me, no one tried to hurt me. Physical discipline and child abuse are different, physical discipline would just hurt but you'll be fine after, child abuse is when you hurt the kid and they have scars and stuff. I'll never forget going to school with a girl who was Asian, she was very quiet and always had very good grades. But there was one time that really made me worrie for her well being and that was when I was going to get my instrument from the band room after school to take home and I over heared her crying in the Instrument storage room, I was not really a friend of hers at the time but I had a big heart then as I do now, so I asked are you okay what is wrong, lets talk about it. I was just shocked at she was so scared to go home to her father because she had made a B+ on a big science class test, have in mind I was in that same class at the same time and no one scored anything higher then a D or C+ very hard teacher, but the fact she was crying and scared to make a B+ scared me so bad for her that I really thought she might have been being abused so I comforted her as much as I could and said well maybe we can do something about it and ask for extra credit because gurl you made a B and i made a D i'm jelly. I also had talked with her after that and the school to see if there was something more that could be done about her situation. Saddly no matter how much I poked to make sure she was okay no one ever bothered in the school system to do anything. I always was kind to her and when I would see her sitting alone I would always sit with her and be there for her and talk and make sure she was doing good and ask if she wanted to hang out she never would hang out after school with me but she never had another upset day like that again. I suppose what im getting at is if your child fears you so much they are scared to go home for a good grade. your doing something wrong.

@@rihaan1163 the way i see it, you might have become a better person despite being hit by your parents. i suppose if you really believe in your theory, i couldn't change your mind but i personally have seen people become kind and respectful despite their parents. to me, hitting your child is a sign that you can't keep your temper in check and are taking your anger out on someone who can't even defend themselves. that's the height of spinelessness and cowardliness. so yeah, congratulations on being a good person, but i bet you're missing out on some important lessons on treating people kindly and the worth of respect, rather thn the worth of fear and abuse. yeah good talk might not do much if parents only excuse their children and compensate for their wrongdoings but that has never helped a child. instead, its much more effective to talk to the child respectfully, explain their mistake and guide them on how to apologise and fix their mistakes. trust me, it goes a long way

I don't believe a child would get scarred when spanked or other mild punishments. It's the lack of communication between parents and other mental abuses parents put on their children leaves scar on the minds of a child. From my own experience I don't remember how much I was disciplined physically but the effects of mental abuses still lingers

I think all asian kids have heard the phrases "I hit you because I love you"or "I yelled at you because I care about you". Asian parents are masters of guilt tripping and are terrible at admitting that they are wrong. I'm surprised more of us aren't stuck in abusive relationships as we age.

Also, if this episode highlighted anything at all , it is that passive aggressive manipulation is a key aspect of Asian parenting. I mean, every parent here, except maybe for the bartender, had that passive aggressiveness thing nailed. Also, the generational difference in Asian parenting style is apparent here. Like how the bartender had much more liberal views than many of the other (older) parents. I found that interesting. I think that difference is partly because she's so much younger than the others, and understands the younger perspective more - plus as a bartender, she will have been exposed to many more viewpoints and many more ways of life, which really does make you more flexible in your judgment of others and their life choices.
@KaLa1865_4 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. I really appreciate Grace being in this video and speaking her beliefs because all these parents (or at least most of them) are very traditional Asian parents, and if you live/have lived in an Asian household (like me), one thing to know is that Asian parents are EXTREMELY stubborn. It doesn't matter how many times you try to talk them down or how many times you think they've listened and changed, they never will and always find a way to turn the situation onto YOU. Grace is understands the current generation better and KNOWS what we've gone through and also understands the mentality of Asian parents. They literally all think "I know what's best for my kid". And I can guarantee you that when they saw how young Grace looked and is, they unconsciously were not even going to listen to her opinions. And then she opened up at the beginning about being a bartender and getting pregnant in college: For an Asian parent, that is the sign of failure. I really am grateful for Grace for being open and honest without letting the attitudes of all these parents in one room scare her.

I think I’ve realized how lucky I am, because I am Korean and my parents are the best parents I think I could ever ask for. They are definitely modernized, I guess. But they are also understanding and kind and loving and just amazing. I have always been a hardworking student in school not because I want it please them, but for myself. At one point I was struggling in math but I didn’t tell them. I ended up getting an f on my test. But you know what they told me? “It’s ok. Remember that whenever you need help, come to us. We love you very much, no matter your grade.” I was really touched to be honest. They make sure to spend time with me and my sisters and are so considerate. I would proudly call them my best friends. I hope that one day, all parents can be like this. But reality is hard sometimes.
