It's really about exposure. As a European with some Asian friends I can separate my friends easily from other Asians but whenever i'm in China/Vietnam/Korea it's just harder because Asian people all have the same hair color, eye color and facial structure. They are also more around the same height and have the same fashion trends. In Europe and America people have a lot of different eye colors, hair colors and height so it's more easy. That being said, they don't look like eachother but they have a harder time to distinguish themselves from others.

Viet people it is harder because Viets are a mix of countries bordering it (laos, cambodia etc) ...but normally if they are double lidded (the eyes) and a tannish skin they are of the south east variety...some viets look chinese though. Japanese and korean do not look like southeast asian at all.
