Do Aquariums Need Air Pumps?
Aquarium air pumps are useful to add extra dissolved oxygen in aquariums where this may be lacking due to low flow or warm temperatures. Aquarium Air pumps also can make attractive addition to aquariums and have many ornaments associated with them. Aquarium Air pumps also allow extra water movement and can prevent dead spots. Air pumps however can be loud and annoying and aren't really necessary if filtration is adequate.

Im glad you noted that it would be silly NOT to have one! I'm raising guppies as feeder fish for my aquatic turtle. I was running an AquaClear 30 for about 18 guppies. At least 6-8 of them stayed at the top of the water doing what I call "the shimmy shake" which made me test the water for everything! It all turned out fine, SO, that lead me to think they couldn't breathe. That must've been what it was because now they're swimming all over...after putting a large air stone rod in the tank. 2 of them are swimming up & down against the glass of the tank though. I am stumped on the reason why. It's like you said, surface agitation contributes to oxygen in the tank, but bubbles also cause surface movement. U gained a new sub!

Some setups do require air pumps. For example fry tanks, shrimp tanks and betta tanks all benefit from calmer water. In those cases a sponge filter is best. Sponge filters are almost always powered by air pumps.

Battery operated pumps are great to keep in reserve in case of power failure! Monsoon season makes this a real possibility here in Arizona!

get an APC USV (normally backup power for servers etc.) .. and you can run your normal equipment through it.. it will automatically switch to battery power and you do not have to fiddle with individual battery powered stuff.. keeps your lights on, your pumps your heater.. everything. depending how you want to set it up..

Everyday Aquarist I am currently having an arguement with someone regarding the fact that my dead fish is a result of the air pump going out, he keeps talking about a "good" filter like you mentioned in your video, but oxygen dissolved into the water is a result of water agitation which is commonly found in display tanks as it's quieter. To sugguest a tank doesn't need an air pump is like saying it doesn't need a filter? Is this true in the case of power outage you are sugguesting the water can remain stagnant and everything will be fine ? Especially if you own tropical fish in warmer water where more oxygen is required

Everyday Aquarist this is confusing! I have 25 gallon tank with 3 gold fish, average filter system. I don't see fish gasping for air on the surface, only occasionally like any other fish. But at night they "sink" to the bottom and I can not tell if they are sleeping or what?

There's pro's and cons to air pumps. On the downside, if your house gets cold in winter at night when the heatings off, pumping cold air through the aquarium just gives the heater a much bigger job to do. Any chemicals in the air from paint fumes to perfumes or household cleaners will get pumped through the water in your tank and some of that disolves readily in water. Imagine you had a big, hairy dog lying next to the air pump and he drops a huge, hot fart which gets pumped into the tank, with you watching on in horror as your fish turn a deathly shade of green.

I prefer a circulation pump over an air pump assuming your tank is large enough and your fish can handle a bit of current. Also you don't have to listen too or look at bubbles which aren't natural in really any scenerio.

Using the air pump in situation where you fish dont like a strong current but need an oxygenation is the best thing and probably the only one way to do it. IFor example imagine the tank with oscars and a strong current ;-)

What if I don’t use a filter and an oxygen? I have a 10 gallon with a filter and a Betta tank, and I was thinking about putting shrimp in the Betta one as it’s pretty big (5 gallons). Problem is I don’t use a filter or an air pump in the Betta tank

I have a small air pump which I poked holes in the tubing (because I'm cheap) for my shrimp since my betta can breathe air but my shrimp don't, also I live in an island and in the summer it gets pretty warm and hot If you have a heavily planted aquarium and the plants themselves are producing enough oxygen, then it is not necessary. I learned the hard way years ago that shrimp do not get oxygen the same way betta do

depends on type of fish,height of the tank,and type of filter you are using right now if you are using a hang on filter they usually dont have enough surface agitation,you may want to add an extra air pump i suggest using top filters,they are basically small cannister filters

Air pumps are way too NOISY as hell and not necessary but cheaper specially if you are using a sponge filter. If you are using a water pump for your water filter, just allow the water to splash down to agitate the water and cause bubbles in the water. If you are using a hang-on back filter, the surface agitation is sufficient enough. If your using over the top filter, just remove the nose to get higher elevation hence better water agitation. Use common sense for other kinds of water filter.

You shouldn't need an air pump for jellyfish, especially in that tank, air bubbles may damage the jellies. They don't require anything extra than what is provided in that set. Nice tank btw. Send a vid when it's running.

Thanks for responding so quickly! I have been watching vids of people that already own a tank like mine and they ran into the issue of the PH level being off a bit because of nitrates in the water. One vid showed them aerating on the side of the tank (not directly above) and that helped stabilize the PH level. I thought to air on the side of caution, so I thought to get one for my tank before any problems occur. But thanks for you input, I really appreciate it!!! Once I get everything set up and my Jellies (Mugen, Jin and Fuu) acclimated, I will post a vid. :)

I’ve got us so a more pressing question for you I swear I saw a leopard bush fish in your tank I have two of them that are about 5 inches max do you have rainbow fish in yours do you have any suggestions one of mine is in a 40 gallon tank the other one is in a 60 gallon tank they do not get along they’re both males I had to separate them a lot of people don’t know about the leopard bush fish/leopard leaf fish etc. any help from anybody would be much appreciated I’m looking for tank mates he eats guppies mollies etc. anything he can fit in his mouth he will try

michelle pawlik not necessarily . Betta fish has a labyrinth organ which allows them to breathe oxygen directly from the surface of water.

Roger Nevez Yes you can run a nono tank without a filter. That said depending on how many fish in the tank you may need to do water changes once to twice daily. Also heavily planting the tank will help.

If enough surface agitation is caused by the flow from your filter they will get plenty of oxygen if not I would consider getting and air pump or circulation pump if you have a large tank. I know this post is old but people like me like to read comments and it never hurts to have extra info added.
