Mr.Subramanyam - there is one more way to look at dividend. Most of us invest in shares in order to own it as a wealth, not to sell them. Sometimes stocks get passed from one generation to other. Therefore, it very much make sense to invest in dividend paying stocks. Reasons: 1. Dividend means the company is making profit, why do you want to own a business if you can’t get any money out of it to run your family? 2. Dividends grow over time. Example, if someone had bought ITC in 90s for 400 rupees, with all the splits and bonuses, he would be receiving a dividend of rupees 400. This way, without diluting your stake in a company, you are getting substantial amount of money as dividend when you think long term. #2, what I mentioned is very powerful. I now hold 80% dividend paying stocks and what once seemed like getting 2000 to 3000 rupees as dividend 5 years before and now seeing dividend amount crossing 6000 to 7000, am already realizing the power of dividend and how it can help your next generation family.
