Following a coup d'etat against Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi and her government at the start of 2021, Western countries have reimposed targeted financial sanctions against their military leaders, family members and business interests. However, the military junta is no stranger to sanctions, with broad sanctions programs in place since 1988. So, how effective are economic sanctions? CNBC's Nessa Anwar discusses the case for, and against sanctions.

If by work you mean the people living in the country suffering because of it, and the people that hold the money and power almost doesn't notice it, than YES sanctions work.

Sanctions I think works better if wealthy business people have a lot of influence/power. Works not as well when it is mainly military generals that have power since he really can get all he needs within the country.

Incorrect. Sanctions work - provided the sanctions regime is not violated. SA and Rhodesia survived for an extended period because they were able to acquire needed items from states that did not conform to the sanctions regime. Iran, however, has had much more difficulty, because its needs are different.

Targeted sanctions can greatly inconvenience some of the folks in power, or at least make it harder them to spend their ill-gotten gains. For example, Carrie Lam (Chief Executive of Hong Kong) has to use cash for everything because no bank will open an account for her due to US sanctions. I'm not saying sanctions work, but freezing the assets of the Tatmadaw does at least make their life a whole lot less enjoyable as compared to doing nothing.

War is just murder taken out of context, and 2 wrongs don't make a right. You cannot isolate punishment(sanctions in this case) from the crime. But if you do, of course it doesn't look fair. And you can say war, punishment and sanctions don't work, until they do. Wars can be won. We ourselves, along with the fact that we're currently at peace, is living proof. You do this and I do that. Does it work? The answer is: not until it does. You can't concede and give up everything simply because someone challenges you. Sometimes you have to stand firm, and sometimes you have to fight ...until we don't anymore. But we're not there yet. Is there a reasonable way the sanctioned country can make the sanctions stop? That's the question you must also ask.

Sanctions are not intended to be a tool to influence behaviour. Sanctions hold two main purposes. 1. To provide a bargaining chip in a negotiation later down the road where you otherwise have nothing to bring to the table. 2. To appease the public so it feels like you're acting when you don't actually want to act, or action would be a mistake.

The question is extremely stupid. Sanctions are useful if they apply pressure to the target.
