Sure seems like there's an increasing number of Euro/American folks coming here, a few years ago you'd rarely ever see foreigners but now you'd find one at every turn in Taipei.
the thing i'd like to know about the last girl is how the heck is her english so perfect? i think she must have learned english from a native english speaker since she was a baby lol.
@niemandkeiner8057 Жыл бұрын
Many Germans are fluent in English, it's nothing unusual.
@Byorin Жыл бұрын
@@niemandkeiner8057 this is a bit different. Yes, many Germans speak English and speak it very well. But that young woman sounded like a native US speaker. Usually it’s not hard to tell that a German person is, well, still German when speaking English. I could not tell with that young woman, except for the small issue that she pronounced “semesters” a little different. I think maybe she lived in the States for a while or has/had American friends.
I spoke Mandarin exclusively in Taiwan but it didn't stop a lot of people in Taipei from speaking English to me even though I didn't want to or have to. My accent and pronunciation was native, they just wanted to practice. But if I let them practice all the time my Mandarin would never improve and I'd be stuck in a country that is not an English speaking country trying to get by without any Chinese language skill, which is fine for temporary residents but bad for long term and permanent residents. It's also a literal requirement if you want citizenship. But so many locals were so pushy about speaking English that I eventually gave up and left. It's far too frustrating and not worth the effort. It also just really sucks to always feel like an outsider. Language is more than just a communication tool, it's a gateway into a culture, and by blocking out a demographic by speaking a different language to them only, it makes them feel ostracized, like they don't belong and never will. Maybe that's the truth though... Another issue that pops up all the time is when a local uses a "foreign friend" to practice English and after a while their Chinese just gets worse because their new English speaking friends only speaks English with them. That's how we got here where people ask 你為什麼要學中文?and 你的中文怎麼這麼好? If Taiwanese people could be like Americans or even Japanese, they'd encourage us to speak their language instead of trying to constantly make us speak English. A lot of "foreigners" aren't even native English speakers!
