Now I understand what the 10th doctor meant by saying "sometimes a time lord lives too long" Now I can see the difference between Tom baker's "do I have the right" and eccleston's "I made it happen"

You kind see where the roles flip in the episode ‘Dalek’. In this episode, Sarah is telling the Doctor to destroy the Daleks once and for all while the Doctor upholds his moral values on life, in ‘Dalek’, the Doctor wants to destroy the last Dalek once and for all and Rose has to uphold that moral value so the Doctor doesn’t become like the Daleks. (It’s one of the reasons Season 1 is the best season in the franchise)

@@TheCastellan That's actually kind of a neat touch. The Doctor, though mostly good at heart(s), is a deeply flawed being who has made mistakes and in some situations (and especially so in some incarnations) can manipulate even his/her friends to further a greater good, but the Doctor isn't like the Daleks and can't bring him/herself to commit genocide. In this moment, he refuses to sink to their level and he and his companions are the only characters who survive the story more or less unscathed. The Dalek has no qualms about ending life and in its single-minded pursuit of the Doctor simply because it cannot tolerate a living being that is different to it, it destroys itself and a bunch of other Dalek creatures. Intentional subtext or unintentional coincidence, it does serve to show how multifaceted and deeply layered Genesis of the Daleks is.

People consider the Doctor to be the "best Time Lord" ever. I say the opposite: the Doctor is a terrible Time Lord, but a great man, greater than anyone else of his kind, because while any other Time Lord would've carried out the task without any hesitation, the Doctor has a strong enough conscience to make him think about what he's doing instead of just blindly following orders.

The Time Lords were always defined as keepers of the status quo, meaning they had an agenda and stuck to it no matter what. Usually, that was good. Against a foe like the Daleks, which possessed similar technology, they ould only expect a stalemate. Which is why they resurrected more bloodthirsty Timelords from bygone eras, like Rassilon to end the war. The Doctor (and even the Master) were always the rogue elements of this agenda, sometimes helping, sometimes hindering. The Doctor more on the constructive (helping) side, the Master more on the destructive (selfish) side. Each were often manipulated until the Time War drove the Doctor to his extreme which was ending the war at all cost, where the Master's goal was escaping the war at all cost.

Unbelievable that at one time a children's show would tackle issues like this at this level. Blew my mind at the time (1975 ) and still does.
@CMacK1294
@CMacK1294 2 жыл бұрын
Children's show shouldn't be seen as a derogatory. By looking down on children and 'children's programming' we belittle the future of our own society. Only by showing children these things at the appropriate time, by respecting them enough to believe that they will accept the correct message do we set a future where they grow into functioning adults. Baby talk, sunshine and rainbows all the time nonsense will invariably raise children to be poorly prepared for reality. Wavering, listless, following whatever the social trend is without any strongly-engrained moral compass, without the background in the sort of philosophical basis that our ancestors paid in blood, tears, tragedies and hard sweat of the mind to acquire. The great benefit of the human race is our ability to pass these hard-learned lessons on to future generations without having to put them through the same centuries of hardship to reacquire it, but only so long as we are willing to strive for our successors to be our betters. So long as we respect our successors enough to grant them the tools, training and knowledge to continue on our legacy, we will thrive. But our attempts to shield them long beyond when they should be maturing does us little good. Without strong virtues and hard questions put to them throughout life, they will, undoubtedly, find themselves falling short of life's great challenges where otherwise they shouldn't. Such unnecessary failure embitters children and adults alike, making them cold and callous, or robbing them of the appropriate, healthy confidence they need to stand up to tyranny, oppression and all the wrong things the world might throw at them. By babying our children, we doom them to the quiet contented slave-life of domestication. Rather than making them peaceful, we make them harmless. Or worse, they backlash against it and become a source of power un-tempered by the wisdom of ages and the compassion of humanity. Even if all of that does not occur, their compassion can be misdirected, misguided, turning them into useful fools willing to commit genocide if they believe they will reach 'utopia'. The 20th century is written in the blood of those who stood in the way of a tyrant's vision of utopia and their actions unhindered by morality and philosophy. This sort of thing should, quite honestly, be a cornerstone of children's programming. If children's programming is to serve any purpose at all, let it be one that strengthens our children, imparts upon them wisdom, and asks them questions they might spend years pondering to find the answer. Only thus is mankind's potential fulfilled.

Some children's shows are very important. A lot of you paint children's shows as something to look down upon. Why? I like the children shows like certain ones in the states such as Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. And others from my own remembered childhood. Reading Rainbow also comes to mind and others would if I gave it more thought and time. Adults should never patronize children. They are strong and intelligent and dear beings who should be respected and protected. Reply

There is a Reason for that, TMA/TWF is the *official sequel* to Genesis of the Daleks, I mean they even filmed parts of TMA/TWF on the *same sets* , as some of them had actually Survived! (it should also be Mentioned the "Heavy Weapons Dalek" seen in Action was also the *Original Prop* from Remembrance of the Daleks!) it is why Several Remastered Scenes from Genesis were also used within TMA/TWF, it is the Official Sequel to Genesis of the Daleks and answers the Questions the Doctor Asked. Good way to lead New Who Fans into Classic Who I think! Big Finish Audio did the Hypothetical Virus in "Terror Firma" However.

@KVAcedo27 It's never actually been revealed what specific event, if any, caused The Time War. I think The Daleks and Timelords have just hated eachother for a very long time and The Hand of Omega incident was just another thing to add to the list. The entire reason The Daleks wanted the hand was to create an energy source capable of time travel, which blew Skaro up instead. I'm assuming after that happened they found an alternative means of time travel. It would only have become a 'time war' when both sides had access to time travel after all! So it doesn't really matter who started the conflict, as the other side can simply go back further in time and attack first meaning the original battle never even happened.

I see a lot of people bringing up that 7 blew up Skaro but the novel War of the Daleks retconned that so that 7 actually blew up Antalin, a decoy planet of Skaro which is where Destiny took place on. I know that piece of information coming from a novel makes it a little shaky in terms of canon but the revival seemed to follow that retcon and state that Skaro was destroyed in the time war.

I remember watching this and being like, "I'd have the same problems if I were in that position". In stopping genocidal monsters before they have the chance to become so by destroying the entire threat in infancy, do you become the monster? That's the wonderful thing about Doctor Who: it gets down to what makes us human, even when every episode deals with aliens. And God I miss Elizabeth Sladen. She was such a great actress and Sarah Jane was a great character. Maybe someday we'll be lucky enough to see Luke and Sky Smith again. Maybe even on the Tardis.

This scene is without a doubt one of the best scenes in Doctor Who and it's Doctor Who writing at it's best. Such a well written scene with great acting by Tom Baker. The Doctor begins to question his mission to destroy the Daleks and if he has the right to kill an entire species. The Doctor has a moralistic side and he questions if what he is about to do is right or wrong and The Doctor is right to question his task given him to be the Time Lords.

I like to think that Cho-Je's assistance with the Doctor's regeneration into the Fourth Doctor made him who he truly was, and that's why we get these moments of the Doctor questioning the morality of this act. It's really a beautiful moment where you get a true sense of the Doctor's values and morality, and in his hearts he's really a person that tries to do as much good as he can. Even if it's the Daleks under the knife, he's scared about having that much power. You can see it again when he faces off against the Black Guardian: the Doctor hates having that much power, and rightfully so. It is pretty terrifying.

I think that Harry in this scene feels a bit superfluous, but you can see just how seriously he takes the situation. He has travelled with this man for only a few short trips prior to this moment, many a time he's proven his worth or tried to keep up with this man, often seeing someone who is somewhat joking and flippant, but for the first time he sees terror. Harry has no frame of reference with the Doctor until this point; if someone who has barely known the Doctor, an alien who supposedly can change his face, has two hearts beating within him, can travel in time and space, and has knowledge that dwarfs his own, can recognise the fear in their actions when talking of the Daleks, it just goes to show just how dangerous these monsters are.

This is the antithesis of the Doctor. A huge alien intellect that questioned his very existence in the involvement he had during his travels. He went everywhere but never sought conflict or change, it was always coincidental or accidental that things changed, he always fought to extract himself from a situation, not impose his morality or judgement upon them. This scene was truly symbolic of his very existence and belief system...

And every Doctor since then has regretted that decision. Well, I don't know if the Sixth and Seventh Doctors have expressed regret at not destroying the Daleks, but I know the Fifth and Eighth Doctors have. And, of course, the War, Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctors remember the Time War.

And from this exact point in time, the first shot of the Last Great Time War was fired. From this moment forward, Gallifrey and Skaro and millions of others sealed their fate. Billions would die, and whole races would perish. Gallifrey would fall, and Skaro would become a wasteland, two all-mighty races pitching all of time and space against each other to gain an advantage that would never come. Heroes would rise, and heroes would fall. Until one man decided, No More.

This entire serial was a work of writing genius by Terry Nation. This scene perfectly parallels the scene with the Doctor asking Davros about releasing a virus as an act of universal genocide. It shows the Doctor is a hero because he consciously makes the calculated choice for good, while Davros is a villain because he makes the conscious calculated choice for evil. The Doctor knows that if he wipes out the Daleks completely, then it might cause more suffering overall. Davros simply doesn't care, he just sees the power of being able to make the choice as his birthright, as a way to achieve godhood.

My answer to the conundrum has changed over time. For most of my life, I have been struggling alongside the Doctor with such a question, but I now perceive one false premise: Preventing evil is not, itself, an act of evil. If the Daleks were instead effectively lobotomized, such that they could no longer exterminate, would that be evil? If they were deprived of weapons, so that they still desired to destroy but could not, would that be evil? In either case, the beings we know as Daleks would cease to exist as surely as if the Doctor had touched the wires.
