AS A SONDHEIMIST! I KNOW I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO LOVE OR EVEN LIKE THIS MUSICAL BUT! I CAN'T HELP IT! I DO HEAR A WALTZ! 😮 AND I LOVE IT!

It already contains the waltzy premices/promises of A Little Night Music.

Why aren't you supposed to love this show? Because the master regretted doing it? it was a charming show with some lovely music. This effort looks like the evening from hell.

How I ache for new music to be composed with this exquisite flowing musical line where the lyrics float gently and clearly over a gorgeous melody. Melissa Errico and the musical direction are brilliant. How lucky we are that for one brief period in the musical theatre Richard Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim created together. I hope that more numbers from this Encore production are given to us on KZbin.

So well stated. It's encouraging to those of us who only knew of the show by its exquisite original cast album that it received this partially staged but superbly sung "Encores" production with full orchestra, faithful to the sound of the original, was well received, long after the show had been considered moribund. What a shame there wasn't a CD or a commercial DVD of this City Center gem.

This delightful, what a find, and the original album is pone of my favourite records - Elizabeth Allen and Sergio Franchi. Such lovely Blue Danubey music - how can you be still? Perfection !

I remember hearing the soundtrack album as a six year old child on the radio when it first came out. I fell in love with it instantly. "An old lady is waltzing in her flat, waltzing with her cat". I just quoted "Such lovely Blue..." to a friend. It's a shame that the collaboration between Rodgers and Sondheim was so difficult. They really didn't like each other...but you'd never know that from listening to that marvelous score. ALL of the numbers are great! "What Do We Do? We Fly!", "Bargaining"....all of them.

There are a few turkeys in the score however. 'Bargaining,' 'Stay.' Not good. They didn't like each other because Stephen wanted to insert lyrics that suggested that one of the main characters was sometimes homosexual. Mr Rodgers wasn't happy with that, so out it went.

Sammy Davis Junior recorded a beautiful version of this song, but it has been removed from KZbin.

does anybody know the background to what is happening in this scene?

Leona (Melissa Errico) said that she knows she will be in love when she hears a waltz. She had earlier mentioned to Mr. Rossi that she would like to buy a garnet necklace and he brings her one. As soon as she sees the necklace she starts to hear the music, and feels she is in love with Mr. Rossi.
@jochenstossberg5427 Жыл бұрын
Then she realizes that the necklace isn't unique - it's one of hundreds apparently. And he has a very understanding wife and children at home. So? So she grows up quickly and realizes that the way Europeans feel about casual relationships is different from home. It all ends happily however with Leona becoming smarter, and going back home enlightened - but alone.

But who is doing the casting on these things? This was written for Sergio Franco in the 60's. He plays an almost gigolo type of character whom the main heroine is attracted to for physical reasons. Does anyone believe that could happen here? And you can't tell me that there are no attractive men in the late 40's to 50's who can sing in NYC
@jochenstossberg5427 Жыл бұрын
Yes it loses what the show is all about doesn't it? Sergio Franco lifted all the ballads through the roof.
