In the beginning I was cherry-picked, and I used to practice only with native speakers because I fell into the trap of those click baits. Then, I changed my mine, which has a positive impact on my approach. As a result, I've cultivated my confidence, courage, and skills needed to understand real life English speakers.

It was a real treat watching both Ethan and Hadar on the same video! Best of both worlds, as they say 😁 I think this approach is the feature - being able to see what a language really is and how it's represented in the real world (and not just as in the bubble on KZbin, FB, etc.) Hope to see more of your collabs together!

Thanks for this interview, Ethan! Around 5 years ago I thought that it would be a good idea to create a KZbin channel to practice my English and connect with other English speakers. I even made a couple of videos back then but never gathered the courage to upload them. In 2019 I stumbled upon Haddad’s channel and two years later ( I’m a pretty slow to make decisions!!) I started making and uploading videos to KZbin. As an introvert who’s very self conscious about my English I can say it’s been a transformative experience. Thanks, Haddad!! ❤️

I've just finished a full version of the podcast and I have 2 questions for Hadar. 1. She said that as a learner I should not only listen to a native's speech but also a foreigners and people of color's speech. I understand why I should listen foreigners (to understand different accents), but why people of color? How the fact that someone is black or white will help me to improve my listening skills? Do they always sound different or what? 2. She said that she has a privilege of sounding like a native. Why did she call it a privilege while it's a result of 10 years of hard work? She's ready to devalue her own hard work to look trendy talking about privileges? I'm not sure I need this. Ethan thank you for your great work, you built a great team of hosts with Ollie and Andrea. Love your podcast

I agree with what you said and that is you have to be able to understand English spoken by people who are not just American or British but from different countries. Imagine understanding only people from American or Britain then you will have a hard time understanding English spoken by people with different accents. I live in London and in London English is spoken by a variety of people each with different accents from all around th world so anyone who grew up in London can pretty much understand anyone with different accents providing that there speech is intelligable.

Fluency, Confidence and Speaking like a native English speaker depends on. -How much effort you put when you study the language.(Grammar) - Time dedicated to the learning-teaching process. - The method that is being used. - And maybe The most important fact of all and that's Practicing all the time and even forget about your own mother language. In that way, some day you'll be able to master the language and realized that you even speak english better than your own mother language. But you don't need to speak like a native, it's just enough if you speak a correct English in order to express your ideas, thoughts and points of view or opinions

I am not sure I agree with Haddar when she says that is only the job of the native speaker to communicate more clearly in a global setting. Although I agree that a non-native speaker should not modify their accent if they do not want to but you cannot use that as an excuse for sloppy speech and poor pronunciation especially in a global setting. Imagine a non-native speaker with really poor pronunciation and a really strong accent speaking a global setting and then blaming everyone for not understanding them because it is their accent. On the flip side you have a native speaker with a really strong accent that even most native speakers cannot understand blaming the non-native speaker for not be able to understand his native accent. Both have to communicate clearly. For example if a non-native speaker speaks with a really strong accent that is really hard to understand and on top of that their pronuciation is very bad, you cannot expect the native or non-native speaker listening to decode every single word they are saying and then on top of that try to get what the message is. This goes for native speakers with really strong accent as well. What Haddar should have said is when it comes to natives and non-natives speakers each person should try to communicate as clearly as possible regards of whether they are native or non-native.
