Having been an iPhone user for almost my entire life, I'm thinking of ditching the iPhone and switching to a more privacy-focused OS. I plan to purchase a Google Pixel 8 Pro soon and install Graphene OS on it 😀. It's good to see so many positive reviews on Graphene OS compared to Apple's iOS. I care about privacy and would like to have control over who has access to my information.

I was under the impression you can install play services still but it doesn't have access to anything you don't provide to it since it doesn't run with elevated privileges. It's also isolated, it doesn't have access to everything(data, sensors, gps, running services and applications...) on your phone.

I believe you can, its something like play services in sandbox mode or something like that. Services is like an app that you make active when you want.

@@dartz315 I think it's the services that don't run as actual services on the device but rather just an app, or like you said, sandboxed differently somehow. Saw another video about isolated granular permissions, like app restrictions down to things like network, or specific folders. If you look at permissions in standard android, it can look like you have all permissions turned off, but by clicking advanced on my phone, there's a bunch of permissions that you can't control. I'm probably going to wait until the pixel 7 is supported and get it or the 6 pro on the price drop. I'm looking forward to it. I ran cyanogen or lineage for years before my note 20. After getting my note 20 nearly 2 years ago, a sane person could not believe it's not listening all the time. I got an ad for a jaw exerciser 20 minutes after a humorous conversation with my wife. A jaw exerciser is way to obscure for anything else. I stopped paying attention to the amount of times things like this happen.

@@zilog1 Care to elaborate? I'm by no means very knowledgeable with the project yet beyond preliminary research. I haven't had time, but I will be ordering a Pixel to use with it. If I'm not correct on this, I would like to know how. This is a key point to me, the ability to have play services, but not have it siphoning data 24/7.

The point of de-googling your phone is to remove yourself from the platform completely. Otherwise there is literally no point. It's not about the play services knowing where your location is. It's not about the specifics. It's a big picture thing. You're not going to be using the Google keyboard or Google drive or anything that starts with Google.

Gonna try it out before I make the switch. This gave me hope that it works well enough. I just need it to play music, make calls and texts and sometimes use other apps.

How do Contacts work in GrapheneOS? Are contacts stored locally? Is there any way to import contacts from a Google account?

Thanks for the review. Since I will be forced to stop using my Samsung Galaxy S3 (Android 4.4.2 with original battery) this December, I'm looking to see what my options are. I know I'm seriously constraining myself as I despise both Google and Apple.

The latest build and android 13 on pixel 7 pro has optional Google play services for those that want it if they want apps like KZbin tv running. As an option under the apps app in the app drawer.

@@TheDevarshiShah There are ways of installing the regular Gcam app. it just requires some play services I think GSF only. and you install it seamlessly with the Graphene app store. it's not the most private though unless you know what you're doing, like disabling Network permission for Gcam. But Yes it's completely possible and easy.

@@LeonardoKZbin8 I have. I got 6a and installed grapheneos but no call recording app worked since it seems like grapheneos is a pure fork of Android 13 with all it's limitations. I ended up going to Android 13 and rooting 6a. Technically, you can go with grapheneos and also rooting it with Magisk and having recoding with Magisk module (btw best call recoding quality ever and I have phone wide adblock with Adaway module). I did not try this combo since grapheneos requires manually reinstall of apps and contacts. Rooting also requires mostly manual setup contact and apps. You can't just hook up another android drive and auto clone old device. Although there might be a workaround but I did not look for it. That's where I stopped experimenting since I did not want to reinstall everything 3rd time. One major flaw with rooting, with or without grapheneos is you have to leave bootloader unlocked. So far I haven't found call recording without a drawback.

@@LeonardoKZbin8 I still have as backup my Note 9 with Android 10. Eventually it will be unusable so I bit the bullet and saw what is possible with new hardware. Like on older Android OS no security patches and with rooted new, security patches are a bit of a pain since you can't get them automatically with root. But something to note, going from Note 9 to 6a, no regrets. I got 6a for $300 and it's insane amount for hardware for $300.

probably a stupid question but the only experience with a pixel that I have is one I bought for my 70yo mother. With this OS are the photos stored on the pohone in a dedicated gallery/app or do you still have to use google photos? I had a learning curve of getting her photos off her old galaxy onto the new pixel. Instead of just hooking her old phone to a computer and saving all the photos and transferring to the pixel I had to sync her google accounts so it could just transfer the photos.

The Pixel does store your photos in its internal local storage. Google Photos serves as the default gallery app and you can visualize all of your media through it. By default it will want to upload all of your photos and sync them to the Google cloud, but you can choose not to do so. So you can actually just transfer media through some USB cable from your computer to the Pixel, idk why was it that you couldn't do that, but you should be able to.

Also something to understand about Google Photos is that when you're using their storage to back up all of your data, the app will let you delete all of your local media and still see it. So basically you still see your photos as if they were on your phone but they're not. This only happens if you manually tell Photos to do so. The advantages of this approach is that you're saving on a ton of local storage space and you're still able to see your photos as if they were saved on your phone, the disadvantage... well you trust Google to store your photos. If you're worried about privacy, perhaps is not the best option.

I'm going to try it out on my old phone. But i'm not sure if it will have issues. (It's lg v20, it generally doesn't play well with alternate os or roms because of the weird secondary screen it has)

You don’t have a good voice for the RE20. SM7B will help your voice A LOT more.. you just don’t have the deep voice needed for the RE20 to stand out. You’re a very soft spoken person, will shine a lot better with a SM7B, it will make it pop/standout A LOT better than the RE20 does.

1: It's all about equalization of the resonating frequencies that make your voice sound different. If you don't "like" the sound of your voice, under certain conditions, then just listen to each frequency band and lower the ones you don't like by 5 or so db. 2: You can eq match pretty much any microphone to another and make a nt1 sound like an sm7b and vice versa. Just takes a bit of time and the right knowledge.
