@@BillWorden HI Bill I hope you are recovering well. I have a very beat up, old Black Powder era Stevens Favorite that I rebuilt using a cold blue process to duplicate a antique case hardened look. The gun took a tumble and got some dinks on the edges of the octagon receiver. So I thought I would take it down file tthe flats out and try your product to see how it turns out. I'll send you before and after photos if you interested. Be safe and stay healthy.

That stuff did an absolutely fantastic job on that magazine. Great job!!!! I'm impressed with how awesome the magazine turned out. I've been trying to find a Gunsmith that does Color Case Hardening on a Receiver of a Single Barrel shotgun and I can't find one anywhere to do it for me but by the looks of how excellent this stuff turns out, I won't need one to do it for me, I'll just do it myself. Back in 1984 I bought a Brand New H&R Model 176 10 Gauge Single Shot Shotgun with a 36" Barrel and back when it was new, it looked sweet, but now that it's 40 years old, she's looking pretty tired and I was getting ready to Cerakote the whole thing, Barrel and Receiver. I can do an awesome job on the Stock and Forend but I'm out of lucky with the metal work. But now, after seeing how great this stuff works, I'll just send in the Barrel for a Cerakote job and I'll do the Stock, Forend and now the Receiver as well!!! It'll end up looking nicer than it did the day I picked it up back in 1984. It came with a Black finish on the Barrel but after going through the Colors that Cerakote offers, I've decided to go with a Dark Navy Blue color that they have available and between that and the great looking colors that popped off that magazine, the NEW Color Case Hardening colors will look amazing in contrast to the Cerakote Dark Navy Blue. Even with the Stock and Forend, from the factory it came in a Dark Brown Walnut color and I've decided to use Red Mahogany Colored Stain on wood of that shotgun because it's a gorgeous colored stain, I've used it before on the wood of other shotguns. I'm excited to get this remodelling job started on my 10 Gauge now because I really didn't want to lose the look of the Color Case Hardened Receiver but it's 40 years now, right and I didn't really want to Cerakote the whole thing either. You made me a happy guy and I'm glad that I stumbled onto your channel. I will certainly be passing it along to a couple of friends whole have older shotguns with Color Case Hardened Receivers that need life put back into them as well!!!! I'm going to go check out your website now and read what I can, then place my order. Thank You for taking the time to post this great product and info on your channel, I definitely appreciate it, Bill. Regards, Tom...

Great video, but a mild acid like lemon juice or white vinegar (both are inexpensive) works to remove a factory finish quite easily. Put them in, fully submerged, before going to bed and awake to bare metal. Wipe down. Bake about 30 mins at 200F. No real labor or shop tools needed. All you need is a kitchen. I use both food acids to remove heavy rust from tools I buy in garage sales.
@BillWorden

@@BillWorden That is one way of looking at it. Another might be, that in my case, the acid works while I sleep so I have an entire day to do the other steps to achieve the end result. So by this measure, my method saves money AND time.

@James Treeman: Depending on the intended use, I will use either REN WAX (Renaissance Wax), or a 2-Part (Catalyzed) Automotive Clear. My choice there is either SprayMax2K, which is in an aerosol can, or if I'm using a paint gun, I'll use PPG DELTRON DC3000. Thanks! Bill :o)

Is the patina like a paint??? Like will it add any thickness to it, and will it scratch off like paint or does it stain the metal??
@BillWorden
@BillWorden 6 жыл бұрын
My patinas have no pigments or dyes in them. They are a chemically reactive, water-based formula, designed to react with steel and stainless steel to produce color/s that can't be accomplished any other way. They're not paints. They will add ZERO film thickness to the metal. thanks! 😊 Bill

Why not just case harden it?

Too expensive & the color depth is no greater than using this method. Requires special equipment & skill. This process does not. Thanks. Bill

Bill, I have an old jar of Blue halo that is thickening up. Can I rejuvenate it with water? I am doing a small project. I will be buying a fresh jar when I get the three large projects ready to go.

Coloring effects, not case hardening; there is a difference. Case hardening was used in place of bluing, cheaper and faster, for corrosion resistance. The colors were a by-product.
@BillWorden
@BillWorden Жыл бұрын
@seanhazelwood3311 Original case hardening, first used in the mid 1800's was used to add a negligible surface ("case" def. = surface), strength to the steel alloys of that time period, which were often inadequate for typical chamber pressures. It was never used in place of bluing. Color Case Hardening, even by today's standards and practices, adds no benefit to modern firearms other than it looks cool. It will, just as it did in the 1800's, decrease the ductility of the receiver's surface. (Make the surface brittle). It also rubs off fairly easy as the 'color' does not go all the way through the billet. Solid effort, though.😎thanks for commenting.

@@BillWorden Except barrels and chamber areas were never case hardened, only receiver slabs and other non-pressure sensitive parts like hammers and triggers. You're correct, it adds no real strength, which is why it wasn't used for anything other than basic corrosion resistance. Everything that had to be tempered was either blued or left in the white because those parts can't be brittle. This doesn't dispute the fact that the process you demonstrate is purely for looks, it doesn't even have the small benefit of case hardening; which was my main point.

@scott haddad...Thanks for your input. Just to be clear, a finish is a coating that 'sits on top' of the surface. My process is a chemical reaction with the metal, becoming a part of the metallurgy and adding no film thickness. 👌 Bill

@@BillWorden thanks for replying so quickly. While I am impressed with the results achieved by using your products and would consider using them in the future, I was searching for instructions on how to harden the surface as well as achieving the wonderful colors. As a matter of fact I have an old percussion lock that was originally case hardened throughout but has lost the colors on the exterior while keeping the hardness and your product might be useful there.
@BillWorden
@BillWorden 3 жыл бұрын
@@scotthaddad563 yes, it would. Through Hardening was not possible with the metals and alloys of the late 19th Century. "Case" is synonymous with 'Surface'. So, color case hardening is a surface treatment, not through-hardening. Even furnace/bone/charcoal/quenching only affects the surface and brings oxides to the surface. It can be marred or even rubbed off with rough use or mishandling. Bill
