Why wait until rain surface water or saturated yard water or gutter down spout water finds it way under foundation into crawl space before pumping it away from foundation outside house to distant drain. A simple pipe drain from crawl space to buried in outside pit pump would handle any pipe leak which has never occurred under my 1974 built house. I put my pump in outside pit at crawl space entrance, and it is easy to service, easy to check ground water level with simple float stick on a ball in pit. Water is drained B4 it goes under foundation into crawl space Has served me well for 6 years now. Don’t have to go under house in crawl in wet soup if a failure would occur. Just raise crawl space pit lid, swap pumps and all is ok ! In Indiana and 30 inch pit depth with another 22 inches of sump pit at bottom edge of crawl space entry pit keeps pump well below frost freeze level! No water standing under house any more!

Chuck I love your videos. You and guys work like a well-oiled machine. I know this video is 8 years old but I figured I reach out anyway. Hopefully you will answer a few of my questions. With the basin that youinstalledl in the pit, can you put more then one perforated pipe into it. I'm looking to try and do this with my brother in his crawl space. And it seems like water is pooling in different parts of the crawl space. How far down do you put the perforated pipe? And we're out of upstate New York. What do you use for a rocky terrain, to dig, It's not easy dirt to dig, every step of the way, there's rocks. Hopefully, you could answer a few of my questions. Thank you, chuck

Some sump basins are perforated and some aren't. If not perforated, water will only enter the basin from the collection pipe. The weight of the pump and the water up to the float valve may keep the basin from floating when the basement is wet. Does anyone have recommendations whether to perforate or not?

I am definitely not a professional, but I would say if you have ground water coming up then use a perforated basin or perforate it yourself. If you only have surface water then just use solid bottom. Dig a hole for the basin regardless and see if you get water come up from the ground.

I live on a hillside, not the top and not the bottom of the hill. So...water passes under/through my house. I have a sloped unfinished crawlspace where the foundation support pillars are located. I have loose gravel covering the whole space. However the gravel is ALWAYS wet, and the air always feels damp. Should I go install just the sump pump in the lowest point or do I also do a French drain?

If I'm not mistaken in doing this, in my install with bring the plastic and tuck/tape it inside of the lid, then put the lid on. It keeps a complete seal but also allows the sump pump setup to be accessed for repairs or maintenance.
